Hematochezia due to Angiodysplasia of the Appendix.

Common causes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding include diverticular disease, vascular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, neoplasms, and hemorrhoids. Lower gastrointestinal bleeding of appendiceal origin is extremely rare. We report a case of lower gastrointestinal bleeding due to angiodysplasia of the appendix. A 72-year-old man presented with hematochezia. Colonoscopy showed active bleeding from the orifice of the appendix. We performed a laparoscopic appendectomy. Microscopically, dilated veins were found at the submucosal layer of the appendix. The patient was discharged uneventfully. A

Association of ten gastrointestinal and other medical conditions with positivity to faecal occult blood testing in routine screening: a large prospective study of women in England.

BACKGROUND: In 2006, the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme (BCSP) in England began offering biennial faecal occult blood testing (FOBt) at ages 60-69 years. Although FOBt is aimed at detecting colorectal neoplasms, other conditions can affect the result. In a large UK prospective study, we examined associations, both before and after screening, between FOBt positivity and 10 conditions that are often associated with gastrointestinal bleeding. METHODS: By electronically linking BCSP and Million Women Study records, we identified 604 495 women without previous colorectal cancer who participated

Relationship between diagnostic imaging features and prognostic outcomes in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), the most frequent mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, are a relatively recently described entity. GISTs can occur across any age but are more common in patients older than 50 years. GISTs most commonly are in the stomach (60-70%), followed by the small intestine (20%-30%); they also rarely occur in the abdominal cavity, such as in the mesentery, the omentum and the retroperitoneum. Contrast-enhanced multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) is the most largely used imaging modality for the localization, characterization and staging of G

Arterial chemoembolization for multiple liver metastases of uterine cancer. Two case reports.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is one of the established therapeutic modalities for treatment of metastatic liver cancer originating in the gastrointestinal tract. However, TACE is seldomly applied to metastatic liver cancer from gynecological regions. We present two cases of multiple liver metastases of uterine cervical cancer, treated with TACE using cisplatin 60 mg/m2, etoposide 200 mg/m2 and lipiodol. In both cases, hepatomegaly was markedly reduced, tumor-markers dropped to within or close to the normal range, and subjective symptoms disappeared. No serious complications

A Prospective Study on the Detection of Gastric Neoplasms Using Pepsinogen and Gastrin-17 Levels.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: GastroPanel tests include gastrin-17 (G-17) levels in addition to pepsinogen (PG) and Helicobacter pylori serology tests. The aim of this study was to identify significant test findings in patients with gastric neoplasms by comparing the findings of GastroPanel tests and conventional serum PG assays. METHODS: Consecutive individuals who underwent serological testing were included from May 2023 to August 2024. Foreigners and those with gastrectomy, renal insufficiency, previous H. pylori eradication, and recent acid suppressant use were excluded. RESULTS: Among the 1,101 part

Imaging spectrum of gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) were first described by Clark and Mazur in 1983 for smooth muscle neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract differentiating them from leiomyoma, leiomyosarcomas and neurogenic tumors. GISTs can arise from the bowel, peritoneum, omentum or retroperitoneum. This article reviews the computed tomography imaging features of primary GISTs, response to treatment and highlights data on predicting the outcome to chemotherapeutic drugs on imaging.

Primary Hodgkin's disease of the sigmoid colon: a case report and review of the literature.

We report the case of an 81-year-old man who underwent a segmental resection of the sigmoid colon for severe diverticular disease. Histopathologic diagnosis revealed extranodal Hodgkin's disease, and the diagnosis was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The incidence of extranodal Hodgkin's disease is rare and represents an infrequent occurrence as a gastrointestinal neoplasm and primary gastrointestinal lymphoma. A review of the literature for gastrointestinal lymphomas with emphasis on the occurrence of Hodgkin's disease, the diagnostic features, and the site of gastrointestinal tract involve

Carcinoid tumors.

Carcinoid tumors, which arise from the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract, encompass a diverse group of neoplasms. Once thought to be "carcinoma-like," these neoplasms exhibit a biologic behavior that varies from an indolent, benign course to an aggressive, rapidly progressive, and deadly disease. Today the term carcinoid is reserved for neuroendocrine tumors arising from the small bowel or neuroendocrine tumors that can cause carcinoid syndrome. This newer terminology has yet to be universally adopted, adding to the confusion in the literature. For the general surgeon there

Therapeutic effect of argon plasma coagulation on small malignant gastrointestinal tumors.

In endoscopy, argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a new principle of non-contact electrocoagulation and has proved to be a sufficient tool for palliative endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal neoplasms, predominantly of the oesophagus and colorectum. In a study of 67 patients suffering from histologically confirmed and endosonographic T1-staged tumours of the gastrointestinum, 10 patients were selected for endoscopic APC treatment because of the impossibility of surgical therapy. Although the application was primarily of a palliative nature, in 9 of 10 cases of minor neoplasms, no further tum

[Duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection : A local parenchyma-sparing treatment of benign and premalignant tumors of the pancreatic head].

BACKGROUND: In contrast to the Kausch-Whipple procedure (pancreatoduodenectomy) duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) is associated with tissue sparing and maintenance of the pancreatic metabolic functions. AIM: According to the results of controlled clinical trials the DPPHR procedure for benign pancreatic neoplasms is associated with low surgery-related complications and maintenance of glucose metabolism and exocrine pancreatic functions. This overview summarizes the clinical results of the use of DPPHR for chronic pancreatitis and benign tumors of the pancreatic head and th

Three novel neoplasms in Nancy Ma's owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae).

Neoplasms are only sporadically reported in New World primates and rarely in owl monkeys (Aotus spp.), specifically. Previous reports of neoplasms in owl monkeys are primarily restricted to lymphoma induced by Herpesvirus saimiri infection, although other tumors in the central nervous, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems have been sporadically reported. Herein, we describe 3 previously unreported neoplasms in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) including a pericardial mesothelioma in a 6-year-old male, a nephroblastoma in a 2-year-old male, and a cervical neoplasm with characteris

Classification and pathology of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) are composed of cells with a neuroendocrine phenotype. The old and the new WHO classifications distinguish between well-differentiated and poorly differentiated neoplasms. All well-differentiated neoplasms, regardless of whether they behave benignly or develop metastases, will be called neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), and graded G1 (Ki67 <2%) or G2 (Ki67 2-20%). All poorly differentiated neoplasms will be termed neuroendocrine carcinomas (NECs) and graded G3 (Ki67 >20%). To stratify the GEP-NETs and GEP-NECs regarding their prognosis, t

Systemic Mastocytosis Imitating Eosinophilic Enterocolitis.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders produce gastrointestinal dysfunction as eosinophils accumulate throughout gastrointestinal tissues. The majority of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders are a diagnosis of exclusion, and a magnitude of differentials must be considered. A history of anaphylaxis raises the suspicion that systemic mastocytosis (SM) is the foremost differential to be considered. SM (hematological neoplasm) is characterized by the accumulation of clonal mast cells in systemic tissues that causes gastrointestinal manifestations. In these rare cases, serum tryptase and tissu

Neuroendocrine Neoplasia in Extranodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma of Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue (MALT Lymphoma) of the Lung: A Case Report and Immunohistochemistry Analysis of Eight Pulmonary MALT Lymphomas.

Carcinoid tumorlets are peribronchiolar proliferations of neuroendocrine cells often associated with lung scars. Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) is a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that frequently involves the gastrointestinal tract but less commonly is described in the lung. Simultaneous occurrence of neuroendocrine neoplasms and MALT lymphoma is extraordinarily rare and has predominately been reported in the gastrointestinal tract. In this article, we describe the case of a 73-year-old female with coexisting pulmonary MALT lymphoma and carcinoid

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor of the liver coexisting with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Approximately 10% of patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) develop other neoplasms, either synchronously or metachronously. In this report we describe coexistence of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor and a hepatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) in a 51-year-old woman with no evidence of tuberous sclerosis. A subcapsular hepatic nodule (0.8 cm in diameter) was found during surgery for symptomatic gastric neoplasm (15 cm in diameter) arising from the lesser curvature. Both tumors revealed histomorphological and immunohistochemical features confirming a diagnosis of a

A Case Report of Celiac Disease and Small Bowel Adenocarcinoma: Two Diseases With Similar Symptoms.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease triggered by gluten in the diet. The association between CD and increased risk of neoplasia is described mainly in patients diagnosed with CD and aged over 40 years or during the first years after CD diagnosis. Patients who remain symptomatic after 12 months of gluten-free diet should be screened to exclude neoplasms, especially lymphoma and gastrointestinal neoplasms. We report a case of small bowel adenocarcinoma (SBA) in a patient diagnosed with CD one year earlier.

Soft Tissue Myoepithelial Carcinoma Metastatic to the Cecum: Highlighting an Unusual Metastatic Pattern and the Need for Diagnostic Awareness.

Myoepithelial neoplasms of the soft tissues are a rare, heterogeneous group of tumors for which classification continues to evolve. While well defined within salivary glands, they can also arise in viscera and soft tissues, where diagnosis is challenging due to the lack of clinical and pathological familiarity. We present the case of a 36 year old man with myoepithelial carcinoma arising as a primary tumor within the soft tissues of the neck, which metastasized to the cecum, causing intussusception. This spindle cell neoplasm showed the classic S100 protein, smooth muscle actin and pancytokera

Pancreatic extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumour with documentation of C-kit mutation: a case report.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms located in the alimentary tract. Stromal tumours that arise outside the gastrointestinal tract as primary tumour are designated as extra-gastrointestinal stromal tumours (EGIST). The EGIST are located in mesentry, omentum, retroperitoneum and rarely in pancreas. Only 19 cases of pancreatic EGIST (pEGIST) have been reported in the literature. Of these, there were only two cases of pEGIST with documentation of molecular alteration in C-Kit gene. We here report a third case of primary pEGIST with documentation of C-
