Alterations in the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in synapse formation, maturation, and function are a hallmark of many neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. For example, there is reduced neocortical expression of the MET receptor tyrosine kinase (MET) transcript and protein in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Rett syndrome. Preclinical in vivo and in vitro models manipulating MET signaling reveal that the receptor modulates excitatory synapse development and maturation in select forebrain circuits. The molecular adaptations underlying the altered synaptic development

Traumatic acute compartment syndrome in childhood is a rare complication following an accident but it occurs more frequently than generally assumed. The accident mechanisms and anatomical localization are very well known so that this complication must always be considered if these risk factors are present. The diagnostic confirmation is based on clinical examination findings and implies the assessment of the three A's: increasing anxiety, agitation and analgesic requirement. The measurement of compartment pressure can only be used if this examination is not possible or appears unsafe; however,

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Summarize the effects of opioids on sleep including sleep architecture, sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and restless legs syndrome.
RECENT FINDINGS: Opioids are associated with the development of central sleep apnea (CSA) and ataxic breathing. Recent reports suggest that adaptive servo-ventilation may be an effective treatment for CSA associated with opioids.
SUMMARY: Opioids have multiple effects on sleep, sleep architecture and SDB. Although originally described with methadone use, most commonly used opioids have also been shown to affect sleep. In patients on chronic m

Literature on children with Klinefelter Syndrome (KS) points to general linguistic difficulties in both comprehension and production among other cognitive functions, and in the majority of cases, these coexist with an intellectual level within the norms. In these conditions, children having language delay generally engage in language therapy and are systematically monitored across ages. In this article, we present the profiles of two children with KS (47, XXY), aged 9.1 (Child S) and 13 (Child D), whose language development was assessed as adequate at age 3, and for this reason, did not receiv

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) that was launched 10 years ago has become a first-line procedure for examining the small bowel, especially in the case of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding. Other major indications include Crohn disease (CD), celiac disease, and intestinal polyposis syndrome. In the case of small bowel diseases, the use of VCE must be integrated in a global diagnostic and therapeutic approach. More recently, wireless endoscopy has been adapted for examining the colon, opening up larger perspectives for colorectal cancer screening or colon examination. Technologic modifications of

The purpose of this study was to describe the digestive neoplasms found in persons with Down syndrome. Due to intellectual disability, persons with Down syndrome do not convey their symptoms and pain, leading to delayed diagnosis and potentially worse outcome. It is thus important to know which organs are at risk for tumors and possible tumor risk factors. In a review of the literature, we found 13 benign tumors and 127 cancers in 1 fetus, 8 children, and 131 adults with Down syndrome. The review suggests a decreased incidence of digestive cancer, however, with a possible increased incidence o

A glance into the mouth at the surgery occasionally confronts the general practitioner or specialist with dental aspects or issues. The nursing-bottle syndrome and injuries from accidents are frequently observed in children. In older patients, mucosal change is not a rare occurrence. A comparatively new field is halitosis and its effective and cause-related treatment.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) of infancy is a cause of prolonged morbidity with intolerance to enteral feeding, specialized nutritional needs, and partial/total dependence on parenteral nutrition. These infants can benefit from individualized nutritional strategies to support and enhance the process of intestinal adaptation. Early introduction of enteral feeds during the period of intestinal adaptation is crucial, even though the enteral feedings may need to be supplemented with an effective, safe, and nutritionally adequate parenteral nutritional regimen. Newer generation intravenous lipid emuls

Chronic heart failure (HF) is a syndrome that affects millions of people globally each year. If a patient with HF does not respond to standard therapy (pharmacological and/or instrumental), the gold standard treatment for end-stage HF is heart transplantation (HTx). The increasing number of end-stage HF patients does not correspond to the number of available HTx procedures. To address this discrepancy and attempt to prolong life, another therapeutic option is the implantation of durable left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), with the next-generation HeartMate 3 device (HM3; Chicago, IL: Abbo

INTRODUCTION: Acute COVID-19 infection causes significant alterations in the innate and adaptive immune systems. While most individuals recover naturally, some develop long COVID (LC) syndrome, marked by persistent or new symptoms weeks to months after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Despite its prevalence, there are no clinical tests to distinguish LC patients from those fully recovered. Understanding the immunological basis of LC is essential for improving diagnostic and treatment approaches.
METHODS: We performed deep immunophenotyping and functional assays to examine the immunological profiles of L

Pelvic actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative granulomatous disease caused by an anaerobic Gram positive germ, Actinomyces. This rare disease can be severe and life-threatening. A intra pelvic bridge becomes chronic and produces a pseudo-tumoural syndrome of the pelvis with retroperitoneal infiltration or extension to neighbouring organs. Initially, neoplasia is usually diagnosed, leading to mutilating surgical exeresis before the pathology results reveal the presence of pelvic actinomycosis. The most difficult task is to entertain the diagnosis in a patient with an intrauterine device and poo

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Down syndrome (DS) exhibit higher risk for celiac disease (CD) than general population. Although literature suggests CD could be associated with behavioural problems in both paediatric and adult age, such association has been poorly explored in children and adolescents DS. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate differences in emotional/behavioural difficulties, adaptive skills and sleep problems between children with DS with and without CD.
METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected from a database including data from 381 individuals with DS (3-18 yea

Sleep problems have a bi-directional impact on the daytime performance of children, parental well-being, and overall family functioning in the general population. Children with Down syndrome (DS) are at a high risk of sleep problems, yet the relationship between sleep problems, adaptive functioning, and family stress in children with DS is not well documented. We examined the relationship between sleep (i.e., duration and quality) and child and parent/family functioning. Sixty-six children with DS wore an actigraph for a week to assess their sleep duration and sleep efficiency. Their parents c

BACKGROUND: Multimodal pain therapy usually take place in the context of group therapy lasting several weeks and is based on a generally activating approach. Due to the specificity of stress intolerance with postexertional malaise (PEM) in patients with postviral syndromes, physical as well as psychological overload must be urgently avoided in these cases; however, these aspects can only be insufficiently considered in current medical pain therapy concepts.

PURPOSE: Individuals with mosaic pathogenic variants in the FBN1 gene are mainly described in the course of familial screening. In the literature, almost all these mosaic individuals are asymptomatic. In this study, we report the experience of our team on more than 5,000 Marfan syndrome (MFS) probands.
METHODS: Next-generation sequencing (NGS) capture technology allowed us to identify five cases of MFS probands who harbored a mosaic pathogenic variant in the FBN1 gene.
RESULTS: These five sporadic mosaic probands displayed classical features usually seen in Marfan syndrome. Combined with the
