Synaptic dynamics mediate sensitivity to motion independent of stimulus details.

Humans and other animals generally perceive motion independently of the cues that define the moving object. To understand the underlying mechanisms of this generalization of stimulus attributes, we have examined the cellular properties of avian wide-field tectal neurons that are sensitive to a variety of moving stimuli but not to static stationary stimuli. This in vitro study showed phasic signal transfer at the retinotectal synapse and binary dendritic responses to synaptic inputs that interact in a mutually exclusive manner in the postsynaptic tectal neuron. A model of the tectal circuitry p

Autoeczematization: A Strange Id Reaction of the Skin.

Autoeczematization, or id reaction, is a disseminated eczematous reaction that occurs due to a release of antigen(s) after exposure to a primary stimulus, with the eczema spreading to a site distant from the original one. This seemingly perplexing generalization most commonly is associated with stasis dermatitis or tinea pedis, though it may be caused by a wide variety of other disorders. We postulate that T cells are reactive to keratinocyte antigens that are produced during keratinocyte damage, which induce this autoeczematization. Studies with current technology are needed to facilitate fur

The role of delta-opioid receptors in the discriminative stimulus properties of a low dose of methamphetamine.

The effects of selective mu-, delta- and kappa-opioid receptor agonists and antagonists on the discriminative stimulus properties of methamphetamine were examined in rats that had been trained to discriminate between methamphetamine (0.4 mg/kg) and saline. Methamphetamine produced a dose-related increase in methamphetamine-appropriate responses in all of the rats. In generalization tests, neither morphine (a mu-opioid receptor agonist: 0.3-10 mg/kg) nor 3,4-dichloro-N-[2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)cyclohexo]benzeneacetamide (U50,488H: a kappa-opioid receptor agonist: 1.0-8.0 mg/kg) generalized to the dis

Drug discrimination studies in rats with caffeine and phenylpropanolamine administered separately and as mixtures.

The discriminative stimulus effects of mixtures of caffeine and phenylpropanolamine (PPA) have been investigated because these drugs have been abused together. Rats were trained to discriminate caffeine (20 mg/kg), PPA (20 mg/kg), or a mixture of both drugs, from saline in a two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcers presented on a tandem VI-FR schedule. Discriminations of mixture, caffeine alone and PPA alone were 90% accurate after 40 sessions. Generalisation to both PPA and caffeine was weak (25-47%) at the doses used in the training mixture, although there was almost comp

Discriminative properties of the psychostimulant dl-cathinone in a two lever operant task. Lack of evidence for dopaminergic mediation.

In order to analyse further the discriminative stimulus properties of stimulant drugs, rats were trained to discriminate 2.0 mg/kg of dl-cathinone in a two-lever operant task. Dose-related generalization was seen to cathinone itself and to a wide range of stimulant drugs including d-amphetamine, cocaine, methylphenidate, pipradrol and cathine, i.e. (+)norpseudoephedrine. The high degree of specificity of the cathinone cue at the specific training dose studied was shown by the fact that the following nonstimulant drugs failed to generalize at all to cathinone, even in large doses--haloperidol,

[Functional organization of limbic brain structures during conditioned reflex activity in the dog].

In experiments on 3 dogs it was shown that instrumental defensive conditioned reflex (CR) to electrical stimulation of the hippocampus is generalized within the limbic system (LS). The rate of generalization depended on the place of testing stimuli in LS. Stimulation of the medial parts of LS at the stage of stabilized initial reflex did not produce the generalized CRs, while they appeared distinctly in response to stimulation of the lateral parts of LS. In the process of elaboration of heterogeneous CRs (defensive and alimentary) to electrical stimulation of the hippocampus, generalized condi

Signal Decoupling and Readout in Multimodal Sensing: Materials to Algorithms.

Multimodal sensing is increasingly important for next-generation electronic systems, yet multi-physical coupling across materials, devices, and readout chains often compromises signal identifiability. The key challenge is whether coupled observations can be uniquely, stably, and interpretably mapped back to the underlying physical variables. Here, we organize multimodal sensing according to where decisive identifiability is established along the sensing-readout chain, defining three architectures: Partition-Integrated, Continuum-Routed, and Hybrid Co-Decoupling. Partition-Integrated systems es

Complementary stable and dynamic prelimbic ensembles encode learned threat value underlying generalization and discrimination.

Adaptive behavior requires assigning emotional value to sensory cues and generalizing to similar stimuli. The prelimbic cortex (PL) is critical for threat expression and discrimination, yet its neuronal ensembles undergo substantial turnover over time. How stable population codes emerge despite this reorganization remains unknown. Using longitudinal calcium imaging in freely moving mice, we tracked PL activity for 30 days during auditory discriminative fear learning and retrieval. Despite substantial ensemble turnover, stable graded representations persisted in PL populations. A generalized li

Discriminative stimulus effects of 5.6 mg/kg pregnanolone in DBA/2J and C57BL/6J inbred mice.

Neurosteroids represent a class of endogenous compounds that exert rapid, nongenomic effects through neurotransmitter receptor systems such as gamma-aminobutyric acid(A) (GABA(A)). Two neurosteroids, allopregnanolone (3alpha-hydroxy-5alpha-pregnan-20-one) and pregnanolone (3alpha-hydroxy-5beta-pregnan-20-one), possess anxiolytic and sedative properties and show substitution for ethanol, benzodiazepines, and barbiturates in drug discrimination assays. A previous study examining the discriminative stimulus effects of 10 mg/kg pregnanolone in DBA/2J and C57BL/6J mice showed pregnanolone's discrim

Pavlovian discriminative stimulus effects of methamphetamine in male Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica).

Pavlovian drug discrimination (DD) procedures demonstrate that interoceptive drug stimuli may come to control behavior by informing the status of conditional relationships between stimuli and outcomes. This technique may provide insight into processes that contribute to drug-seeking, relapse, and other maladaptive behaviors associated with drug abuse. The purpose of the current research was to establish a model of Pavlovian DD in male Japanese quail. A Pavlovian conditioning procedure was used such that 3.0 mg/kg methamphetamine served as a feature positive stimulus for brief periods of visual

Phentermine+fenfluramine produce cocaine-like discriminative cues.

Drug discrimination studies were conducted in six male Sprague-Dawley rats trained to discriminate the interoceptive cues produced by 10 mg/kg cocaine in an effort to investigate if there is stimulus generalization to phentermine or phentermine + fenfluramine. Once having reached criterion performance, these rats were tested with lower doses of cocaine and generated a typical dose-response curve allowing for calculation of an ED50 value: 2.798 mg/kg. Testing of phentermine in doses of 1.25-5.0 mg/kg indicated generalization with the highest dose producing 80% cocaine-appropriate responding and

Midazolam cue in rats: effects of Ro 15-1788 and picrotoxin.

The discriminative stimulus effect of midazolam, a short-acting benzodiazepine, was used for testing the effects of drugs thought to act as antagonists at different sites in the proposed benzodiazepine receptor complex. Rats were trained in a standard two-bar operant conditioning procedure with food reinforcers delivered on a tandem schedule. The 0.4 mg/kg dose of midazolam used for training was well discriminated, typically yielding at least 95% correct responding. The benzodiazepine receptor antagonist Ro 15-1788 blocked the discriminative effect of midazolam but did not influence generaliza

Interventions for Transition-Related Challenging Behavior in Individuals with Disabilities: A Targeted Research Synthesis and Meta-Analysis of Studies Published in Behavior Analytic Journals.

Transition-related challenging behavior is common among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly during changes between activities. Two hypothesized controlling variables-unpredictability and negative incentive shifts-may contribute to the occurrence of these behaviors. This targeted research synthesis and meta-analysis identified studies published in behavior-analytic journals examining interventions developed to decrease transition-related challenging behavior. Nineteen experiments across sixteen peer-reviewed articles were included in the targeted research

The discriminative stimulus properties of legal, over-the-counter stimulants administered singly and in binary and ternary combinations.

Ninety-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were trained in one of seven drug versus saline (SAL) discrimination (DD) tasks under a variable-ratio 5-15 schedule of food-motivated lever press responding. Three groups of rats (n = 12/group) were trained to discriminate between one of the legal over-the-counter (OTC) stimulants--caffeine (CAF), ephedrine (EPHED), phenylpropanolamine (PPA), and SAL. Three other groups (n = 12/group) were trained to discriminate between one of three binary stimulant combinations--CAF+EPHED, CAF+PPA, EPHED+PPA, and SAL. The seventh group of rats (n = 24) was trained to disc

Functional neuroimaging of associative learning and generalization in specific phobia.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models have implicated classical fear conditioning, fear generalization, and extinction learning in the development of anxiety disorders. To date, it is largely unknown to what extent these mechanisms and the underlying neurobiology may be altered in specific phobia, a disorder characterized by focal fears. The current study systematically examined fear conditioning, fear generalization, extinction learning, and extinction recall in a sample of individuals with a specific phobia. METHODS: Participants with a specific phobia (SP) of spiders (n = 46) and healthy controls

Generalization of Pain-Related Fear Using a Left-Right Hand Judgment Conditioning Task.

Recent research suggests that the mere intention to perform a painful movement can elicit pain-related fear. Based on these findings, the present study aimed to determine whether imagining a movement that is associated with pain (CS+) can start to elicit conditioned pain-related fear as well and whether pain-related fear elicited by imagining a painful movement can spread towards novel, similar but distinct imagined movements. We proposed a new experimental paradigm that integrates the left-right hand judgment task (HJT) with a differential fear conditioning procedure. During Acquisition, one

Effects of noise on the performance of rats in an operant discrimination task.

Two experiments examined the effect of the presentation of an irregular, moderate intensity auditory stimulus ('noise') on the performance of rats in an operant discrimination task. In Experiment 1, rats first learned to press a lever in the presence of a visual stimulus but not in its absence. Discrimination performance was impaired during subsequent exposure to noise. In Experiment 2, different groups of rats learned the discrimination task under a noise or a no-noise condition. Thereafter, all rats were tested under each noise condition. Discrimination performance was best when the noise co

Distinct neuronal populations in the human brain combine content and context.

The medial temporal lobe, and particularly the hippocampus, has been proposed to encode items in context1,2. Although hippocampal memory representations are largely context-dependent in rodents3,4, concept cells in humans appear to be context-invariant5. However, it remains unknown how item and context information are combined to form or retrieve integrated item-in-context memories at the single-neuron level in humans. Here we show that coordinated activity of distinct neuronal populations supports item-in-context memory. In a context-dependent picture-comparison task, we recorded 3,109 neuron

Relationship of Reaction Time to Perception of a Stimulus and Volitionally Delayed Response.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Initiation of response in a simple reaction time (RT) task may precede conscious perception of the stimulus. Since volitionally delayed responses may require conscious perception of the stimulus before response initiation, it has been hypothesized that volitionally delayed responses will markedly delay RT. METHODS: We conducted two experiments with separate groups of healthy volunteers (n=16; n=13) who performed computerized simple and choice RT tasks. In the standard condition, we instructed the participants to respond to a visual stimulus by pushing a button as qui

Shifts in postdiscrimination gradients within a stimulus dimension based on bilateral facial symmetry.

A shift in generalization gradients away from S+ and towards stimuli on the opposite end of the stimulus dimension from S- is a well established phenomenon in the laboratory, occurring with humans and nonhumans and with a wide range of stimuli. The phenomenon of gradient shifts has also been observed to have an analogous relationship to a variety of apparent biases in preference observed in the natural environment. One way to examine the validity of such analogies is by examining whether gradient shifts can be observed with complex and naturalistic stimuli. In the present experiment, undergrad
