Advances in schizophrenia research and treatment: exploring neurotransmitter imbalances, genetics, and innovative therapies.

Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder arising from genetic vulnerability, impaired neurodevelopment, neurobiological dysregulation, and environmental factors. Its pathophysiology involves disturbances in dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin systems, as well as neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, gut-brain axis dysfunction, and altered energy metabolism. Current dopaminergic pharmacotherapy is often complicated by insufficient efficacy, adverse effects, and patient non-compliance. This review summarizes genetic predispositions, neurotransmitter imbalances, and other contributing factors of s

[Research advance on the clinical phenotypes and molecular genetic mechanisms of Microcephalic primordial dwarfism].

Primordial dwarfism (PD) refers to a group of monogenic genetic disorders characterized by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and severe, persistent postnatal growth retardation. These diseases have been associated with variants of multiple genes whose products are mainly involved in critical cellular biological processes such as maintenance of genomic stability, DNA damage repair, mRNA splicing regulation, and centrosome function. Variants of such genes can directly impair cell proliferation and developmental potential. With the widespread application of molecular genetic technologies suc

Perspectives on Genetic and Environmental Factors in Myopia, Its Prediction, and the Future Direction of Research.

The dramatic rise in myopia prevalence over the last century is most likely a function of modern-day childhood - a reduction in time spent outdoors and increasing time on near tasks. The widespread use of handheld digital devices, especially in young children, is of concern - both in terms of myopia risk but additionally that excessive use may be linked to sociodemographic factors and could more widely negatively affect health outcomes. Refractive error is a highly heritable trait, and genetic factors are the leading determinant of refractive status variation within a particular environment. B

yEvo: A modular eukaryotic genetics and evolution research experience for high school students.

The resources for carrying out and analyzing microbial evolution experiments have become more accessible, making it possible to expand these studies beyond the research laboratory and into the classroom. We developed five connected, standards-aligned yeast evolution laboratory modules, called "yEvo," for high school students. The modules enable students to take agency in answering open-ended research questions. In Module 1, students evolve baker's yeast to tolerate an antifungal drug, and in subsequent modules, investigate how evolved yeasts adapted to this stressful condition at both the phen

Inclusion of the severe and enduring anorexia nervosa phenotype in genetics research: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa has one of the highest mortality rates of all mental illnesses. For those who survive, less than 70% fully recover, with many going on to develop a more severe and enduring phenotype. Research now suggests that genetics plays a role in the development and persistence of anorexia nervosa. Inclusion of participants with more severe and enduring illness in genetics studies of anorexia nervosa is critical. OBJECTIVE: The primary goal of this review was to assess the inclusion of participants meeting the criteria for the severe enduring anorexia nervosa phenotype in ge

Genetic deletion of Bco2 and Isx establishes a golden mouse model for carotenoid research.

OBJECTIVE: Low plasma levels of carotenoids are associated with mortality and chronic disease states. Genetic studies in animals revealed that the tissue accumulation of these dietary pigments is associated with the genes encoding β-carotene oxygenase 2 (BCO2) and the scavenger receptor class B type 1 (SR-B1). Here we examined in mice how BCO2 and SR-B1 affect the metabolism of the model carotenoid zeaxanthin that serves as a macular pigment in the human retina. METHODS: We used mice with a lacZ reporter gene knock-in to determine Bco2 expression patterns in the small intestine. By genetic di

Biolinguistics: A Scientometric Analysis of Research on (Children's) Molecular Genetics of Speech and Language (Disorders).

There are numerous children and adolescents throughout the world who are either diagnosed with speech and language disorders or manifest any of them as a result of another disorder. Meanwhile, since the emergence of language as an innate capability, the question of whether it constitutes a behaviour or an innate ability has been debated for decades. There have been several theories developed that support and demonstrate the biological foundations of human language. Molecular evidence of the biological basis of language came from the FOXP2 gene, also known as the language gene. Taking a closer

Research on clinical and molecular genetics of hereditary spastic paraplegia 11 patients in China.

The hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a rare hereditary disease in nervous system due to the damage of corticospinal tract. HSP has various inheritance modes, including autosomal dominant inheritance, autosomal recessive inheritance, X-linked inheritance, and mitochondrial inheritance in some cases. At present, there are at least 80 subtypes of HSP. Hereditary spastic paraplegia type 11 (SPG11) is the most common subtype in autosomal recessive inheritance, and its pathogenic factor is KIAA1840 gene, which encodes spatacsin protein. A total of 52 SPG11 patients aged from 4-24 years old hav

Genetically Encoded Tools for Research of Cell Signaling and Metabolism under Brain Hypoxia.

Hypoxia is characterized by low oxygen content in the tissues. The central nervous system (CNS) is highly vulnerable to a lack of oxygen. Prolonged hypoxia leads to the death of brain cells, which underlies the development of many pathological conditions. Despite the relevance of the topic, different approaches used to study the molecular mechanisms of hypoxia have many limitations. One promising lead is the use of various genetically encoded tools that allow for the observation of intracellular parameters in living systems. In the first part of this review, we provide the classification of ox

Clinical and genetic heterogeneity in Dubowitz syndrome: Implications for diagnosis, management and further research.

Dubowitz syndrome was described in 1965 as a recognizable syndrome characterized by microcephaly, short stature, eczema, mild developmental delays, and an increased risk of malignancy. Since its original description, there have been over 200 reported cases though no single gene has been identified to explain a significant proportion of affected individuals. Since the last definitive review of Dubowitz syndrome in 1996, there have been 63 individuals with a clinical, or suspected, diagnosis of Dubowitz syndrome reported in 51 publications. These individuals show a markedly wide spectrum with re
