OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Bell's palsy is highly associated with diabetes mellitus (DM). Either the reactivation of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or diabetic mononeuropathy has been proposed to cause the facial paralysis observed in DM patients. However, distinguishing whether the facial palsy is caused by herpetic neuritis or diabetic mononeuropathy is difficult. We previously reported that facial paralysis was aggravated in DM mice after HSV-1 inoculation of the murine auricle. In the current study, we induced HSV-1 reactivation by an auricular scratch following DM induction with streptoz

Ramsay-Hunt syndrome is caused by varicella zoster virus infection in the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. It is characterized by facial palsy, otic pain, and herpetic vesicles around the auricle and external auditory canal. Additionally, symptoms may develop related to other cranial nerve involvement, such as dizziness or hearing loss by the vestibulocochlear nerve being invaded. We report a rare case of a Ramsay-Hunt syndrome patient who developed dysphagia due to multiple cranial nerve involvement including the glossopharyngeal nerve and vagus nerve.

Facial nerve meningioma is exceedingly rare and tends to affect the geniculate ganglion. We present a case of facial nerve meningioma located in the internal auditory canal with a "labyrinthine tail," mimicking facial nerve schwannoma. The clinical and radiological features, growth patterns, and surgical management were reviewed. Progressive facial paralysis was the main syndrome, similar to other facial nerve tumors. When facial nerve function is worse than House-Brackmann grade III, surgical resection should be performed with facial nerve reconstruction.

The paper reviews 27 cases of traumatic facial paralysis undergone surgical treatment. Most of the cases showed injuries to the horizontal and perigeniculate segments of the facial nerve. All cases have been followed up for 6 months to 2 years. Complete recovery occurred in 20 of the cases and partial recovery in 7 cases (II in 2, III in 5). Trans-mastoid/attic approach was used which yielded exposure of the geniculate ganglion and distal part of the labyrinthine segment of the nerve. Indications and surgical approach were discussed.

The ontogeny of the neurons exhibiting substance P-like immunoreactivity (SPLI) was examined in the spinal and cranial sensory ganglia of chick and quail embryos. It was shown that in dorsal root ganglia (DRG) virtually all neuronal somas occupying the mediodorsal (MD) region of the ganglia are SPLI-positive while the larger neurons of the lateroventral (LV) area are SPLI-negative. In the cranial nerve ganglia, both types of neurons coexist in the trigeminal ganglion but with a different distribution: small neurons with SPLI are proximal while large neurons without SPLI occupy the maxillomandi

Spontaneous retinal wave activity shaping the visual system is a complex neurodevelopmental phenomenon. Retinal ganglion cells are the hubs through which activity diverges throughout the visual system. We consider how these divergent hubs emerge, using an adaptively rewiring neural network model. Adaptive rewiring models show in a principled way how brains could achieve their complex topologies. Modular small-world structures with rich-club effects and circuits of convergent-divergent units emerge as networks evolve, driven by their own spontaneous activity. Arbitrary nodes of an initially ran

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a rare inner ear disorder; currently, it is unknown whether the etiopathology underlying this structural irregularity affects neighboring structures. The goal is to investigate the prevalence of bone thinning in areas of the middle cranial fossa (MCF) floor in SSCD and non-SSCD patients.
METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 100 patients from March 2011 to June 2017 at a tertiary referral center. 100 patients undergoing 118 SSCD repair surgeries (18 bilateral) were identified. 12 SSCD ears were excluded due to lack of pre-opera

Intractable, unexplained deep-ear pain presents a rare, albeit significant problem in otolaryngological and neurosurgical practice. The authors review their experience with 18 cases of primary otalgia during the past 15 years. A total of 31 surgical procedures were performed. Seventeen patients had sequential rhizotomies and one patient had microvascular decompression alone. Based on the clinical diagnosis, the nerves sectioned were singly or in combination: the nervus intermedius (14 patients), geniculate ganglion (10 patients), ninth nerve (14 patients), 10th nerve (11 patients), tympanic ne

The source of innervation of the corpuscular bodies in the palate and the central projections of the afferent fibres of the entire palate was studied in rats by transganglionic transport of horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA-HRP) and with substance P (SP) immunohistochemistry. WGA-HRP injected into the incisal papilla was taken up by the nerve fibres that terminated in the corpuscles. Retrogradely labelled neurons were observed in the trigeminal ganglion as well as anterogradely labelled terminals in the dorsolateral part of the spinal trigeminal nucleus and in the

PURPOSE: To study different types of extension of sphenoid sinus pneumatization detected by CT and examine their correlation with other anatomical variants.
METHODS: Sphenoid sinus pneumatization was characterized (780 hemi-sinuses) on CT scans. Its incidence and correlations with related anatomical variants were evaluated. Dimensions of surgical window were measured in the lateral type, where pneumatization extends beyond a line connecting Vidian (pteregoid) canal (VC) and foramen rotundum (FR).
RESULTS: The lateral recess of the sphenoid sinus was pneumatized in 27.3% of patients with a me

In the mouse visual system, multiple types of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) each encode distinct features of the visual space. A clear understanding of how this information is parsed in their downstream target, the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), remains elusive. Here, we characterized retinogeniculate connectivity in Cart-IRES2-Cre-D and BD-CreER2 mice, which labels subsets of on-off direction-selective ganglion cells (ooDSGCs) tuned to the vertical directions and to only ventral motion, respectively. Our immunohistochemical, electrophysiological, and optogenetic experiments reveal

Greater superficial petrosal nerve (GSPN) schwannomas are an exceedingly rare nerve sheath tumor. The current literature search was conducted using Medline and Embase database by key search terms. Only 31 cases have been reported in the literature so far. Facial palsy, hearing loss, and xerophthalmia accounted for 48.4% (15), 41.9% (13), and 29% (9) of all cases, respectively. The middle cranial fossa approach was used in all previous reports. A retrospective review of 2 GSPN schwannomas patients treated by endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) in our center was collected. Clinical records, incl

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a rare complication of herpes zoster which results from the reactivation of the latent varicella-zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion. Although facial nerve is the most common affected nerve in Ramsay Hunt syndrome, other cranial and cervical nerves can also be affected. We present an atypical case of Ramsay Hunt syndrome in a 42-year-old male, with cervical nerve involvement. As spontaneous recovery rate in Ramsay Hunt syndrome is low, early diagnosis and treatment plays a key role in full recovery of paralysis.

Neural degeneration in glaucoma involves retinal ganglion cells and neurons of their major target, the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). Dendrites of relay LGN neurons projecting to the visual cortex were studied by immunocytochemical and quantitative Sholl analysis in combination with confocal microscopy and 3D-morphometry. In non-human adult primate glaucoma, relay LGN neurons showed reduced dendrite complexity and length, and these changes were modified by NMDA receptor blockade. Dendrite plasticity of LGN relay neurons in adult primate glaucoma has implications for potential disease modifi

Ramsay Hunt syndrome develops upon reactivation of a latent virus within the geniculate ganglion. The patient presents with acute facial paralysis, severe ear pain, and a vesicular eruption of the external auditory canal and concha. Varicella zoster virus seropositivity occurs among approximately 90% of members of society. In these persons, virus reactivation may occur especially with advancing age and immunosuppression. We present a case of Ramsay Hunt syndrome that developed in a 35-year-old male patient, who had undergone a renal transplantation 8 months prior and had received maintenance i

Fifty-six cases of Bell's palsy that were examined and diagnosed with neuro-otologic and electrodiagnostic methods were treated with facial nerve decompression. Transmastoid posterior tympanotomy decompression of the facial nerve from the geniculate ganglion to the stylomastoid foramen was performed. The operative results of the 56 cases were as follows: satisfactory 23, fair 30 and moderate 3 respectively. 3 cases of mild high frequency hearing loss and 2 cases of eardrum perforation were found during follow-up. Factors correlated with curative effect, indication and precautions of operation

INTRODUCTION: Defective visual information processing contributes to visual hallucination in PD, for which "top-down" and "bottom-up" impairment are suggested mechanisms. This study was aimed to investigate macro- and microstructural neural changes in afferent visual pathways in relation to visual hallucination in nondemented PD patients.
METHODS: This study included 24 nondemented, nondepressed PD patients (10 hallucinating and 14 nonhallucinating) and 15 age-matched healthy controls. We analyzed volumetric and diffusion tensor MRI data by applying region of interest analyses on the visual p
