Anode-respiring bacteria (ARB) generate electrical current from the oxidation of short chain fatty acids (SCFA), primarily acetate, in microbial electrolysis cells (MECs). Animal rendering wastewater (RW) has high fat content, which under anaerobic conditions can yield acetate, making RW a potential feed for MECs. Yet, excess intermediate long chain fatty acids (LCFA) may limit conversion of LCFA and SCFA, and impact ARB activity. Here, we evaluated electrical current production in single-chamber MECs fed with RW. In RW-fed MECs, 34.26 ± 2.69% of the COD provided was converted to electrical cu

Iron-rich Fenton sludge generated from wastewater treatment was pyrolyzed to prepare biochar, which was then applied as an electrode substrate in a constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) to simultaneously enhance wastewater treatment efficiency and recover bioenergy. By comparing the performance of three groups (pure gravel system: CW-MFC I; 400°C biochar-amended system: CW-MFC II; 600°C biochar-amended system: CW-MFC III) under varying influent concentrations, the enhancement mechanism of sludge-derived biochar was systematically investigated. Results show CW-MFC III with 600°C bioc

Conventional potential difference optimization in microbial electrolysis cell-integrated constructed wetlands (ECWs) treating antibiotic-laden wastewater frequently prioritizes single-dimensional removal efficiency, critically overlooking trade-offs with energy consumption and ecological risks. By evaluating four ECWs operated under varying potential differences treating chloramphenicol (CAP) wastewater via physicochemical metrics, multiomics, structural equation modeling, and comprehensive risk assessment, we identified a potential difference-driven "cathode biofilm-plant physiology" cascade

Sewage sludge is a potential bioresource for methane recovery through anaerobic digestion (AD), but limited hydrolysis and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) dissemination constrain its efficient and safe valorisation. This study compared the effects of sludge derived hydrochar, hydrothermal liquor, and their combined addition on methane recovery, methanogenic mechanisms, and ARGs mobility during sludge AD. Compared with the control, hydrochar, hydrothermal liquor, and their combined addition increased cumulative methane production by 34.3%, 32.8%, and 57.5%, respectively, with the combined ad

Introducing a synthetic H2/CO2 gas mixture into anaerobic systems is a promising strategy for C1 gas valorization, renewable energy storage, and sustainable chemical synthesis. However, systematic comparisons of inoculum sources under identical operational conditions remain limited. In this study, three inoculum sources, fermentation sludge (S1), lake sediment (S2), and brewery anaerobic sludge (S3), were compared for acetate production from CO2 and H2, with particular attention to microbial community succession and reactor stability. S3 showed the highest CO2 consumption rate (331 ± 4 mg CO2/

Biofiltration systems can synergistically remove multiple pollutants from paddy field drainage, including nutrients and emerging contaminants such as antibiotic residues. However, their application is often limited by insufficient denitrification, which can also create nitrosative stress that induce horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among denitrifying bacteria, thereby posing potential secondary environmental risks. In this study, a pilot-scale innovative biochar-based biofiltration (IBBF) system amended with goethite was developed and operated over two rice-growing cyc

Complex cross-talk occurs between gastrointestinal nematodes and gut symbiotic microbiota, with consequences for animal metabolism. To investigate the connection between methane production and endoparasites, this study evaluated the effect of mixed infection with Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis on methanogenic and methanotrophic community in rumen microbiota of lambs using shotgun metagenomic and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). The rumen content was collected from six Santa Inês lambs, (7 months old) before and after 42 days infection by esophageal tube. The metageno

Accumulation of geogenic phosphorus (P) in groundwater is an emerging environmental concern, which is closely linked to coupled processes involving FeOOH and organic matter under methanogenic conditions. However, it remains unclear how P enrichment is associated with methane cycling, particularly the anaerobic methane oxidation (AMO). This study conducted a comprehensive investigation of carbon isotopes in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), CO2, and CH4, alongside Fe isotopes, microbial communities, and functions in quaternary aquifers of the central Yangtze River plain. The study found that P

This study aims to develop and validate a comprehensive method for assessing ecological disturbances in groundwater ecosystems caused by tetrachloroethylene (PCE) contamination, utilizing flow cytometry (FCM) fingerprint approach. We hypothesized that the ecological disturbance resulting from PCE contamination would exhibit 'press disturbance', persisting over extended periods, and inducing notable phenotypic differences in the microbial community compared to undisturbed groundwater. We collected 40 groundwater samples from industrial district with a history of over twenty years of PCE contami

Antibiotics are ubiquitous in the iron-rich environments but their roles in microbial reduction of Fe(III) oxides are still unclear. Using ampicillin and Geobacter soli, this study investigated the underlying mechanism by which antibiotic regulated microbial reduction of Fe(III) oxides. Results showed that sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations (sub-MIC) of ampicillin significantly affected ferrihydrite reduction by G. soli, with a stimulatory effect at 1/64 and 1/32 MIC and an inhibitory effect at 1/8 MIC. Increasing ampicillin concentration resulted in increasing cell length and decreasing ba

The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) mediated by minerals and/or microorganisms plays a vital but underappreciated role in affecting carbon and nutrient cycles at soil-water interfaces. It is currently unknown which interactions between microbial communities and iron (Fe) minerals produce hydroxyl radical (HO•), which is the strongest oxidant among ROS. Using a series of well-controlled anoxic incubations of soil slurries, we demonstrated that interactions between microbial communities and Fe minerals synergistically drove HO• production (up to ∼100 nM after 21-day incubation). To date, comparatively little is known about the role of natural Fe(II)-bearing minerals in bioremediation of chromium (VI) contaminated aquifers subject to chemoautotrophic conditions. This work employed four kinds of Fe(II)-bearing minerals (pyrite, mackinawite, wustite, and magnetite) as inorganic electron donors to support Cr(VI) bio-reduction. In batch experiments, mackinawite (FeS) performed best, with Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 98.1 ± 1.21 % in 96 h. Continuous column experiments lasting 180 d implied that groundwater chemistry and hydrodynamics influenced the Cr(VI) removal process.

This study was conducted to explore enhancement of biological anode-dependent ammonium oxidation (bioanoammox) in a bioelectrochemical-enhanced constructed wetland (BECW) by an approach of regulating applied voltage, nitrogen transformation patterns and associated microbiological characteristics of the BECWs were then investigated at four different applied voltages during the advanced treatment of anaerobically-digested swine wastewater. The results showed that, application of different applied voltage could significantly affect start-up and operating performance of the BECW. As the applied vo

Plutonium (Pu) cycling and mobility in the environment can be impacted by the iron cycle and microbial community dynamics. We investigated the spatial and temporal changes of the microbiome in an iron (Fe)-rich, plutonium-contaminated, monomictic reservoir (Pond B, Savannah River Site, South Carolina, USA). The microbial community composition varied with depth during seasonal thermal stratification and was strongly correlated with redox. During stratification, Fe(II) oxidizers (e.g., Ferrovum, Rhodoferax, Chlorobium) were most abundant in the hypoxic/anoxic zones, while Fe(III) reducers (e.g.,

The mobilization of arsenic (As) at the sediment-water interface (SWI) is crucial for determining the accumulation of dissolved As to potentially toxic levels. However, the specific impacts of redox processes involving iron (Fe) and sulfur (S), as well as microbial activities occurring in sediments, on As mobilization at the marine SWI remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated As mobilization at the SWI in the Changjiang Estuary during three different seasons with different benthic redox conditions. The preferential reduction of arsenate (As(V)) to arsenite (As(III)) and subsequ

Mercury sulfide nanoparticles (HgSNP), as natural metal-containing nanoparticles, are the dominant Hg species in anoxic zones. Although the microbial Hg methylation of HgSNP has been previously reported, the importance of this process in Hg methylation has yet to be clarified due to the lack of knowledge on the internalization and transformation of HgSNP. Here, we investigated the internalization and transformation of HgSNP in microbial methylator Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA through total Hg analysis and different Hg species quantification in medium and cytoplasm. We found that the microbial

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) could achieve the removal of antibiotics and generate power in the meantime, a process in which the bacterial community structure played a key role. Previous work has mainly focused on microbes in the anode, while their role in the cathode was seldomly mentioned. Thus, this study explored the bacterial community of both electrodes in MFCs under sulfadiazine (SDZ) pressure. The results showed that the addition of SDZ had a limited effect on the electrochemical performance, and the maximum output voltage was kept at 0.55 V. As the most abundant phylum, Proteobacteria

Thermally enhanced bioremediation is a promising approach to shorten the bioremediation period of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE). To clarify the influence that temperature has on stepwise PCE dechlorination and associated microorganisms, this study conducted dechlorination experiments using contaminated soil and groundwater under five distinct temperature conditions (i.e., 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 °C). PCE and TCE were dechlorinated most rapidly at 25-35 °C, whereas the preferable temperatures for the dechlorination of cis-1,2- dichloroethene (cis-1,2-DCE) and vinyl chloride (

The sulfidogenic process driven by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) is not suitable for mercury-contaminated wastewater treatment due to the highly toxic methyl-mercury (MeHg) produced by SRB. In our previous study, we observed in short-term batch tests that sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB) could remove mercury ions without MeHg production. Thus, the aim of this study is to develop a biological sulfur reduction process driven by S0RB for mercury-contaminated wastewater, and investigate its long-term performance on mercury removal and MeHg accumulation. Receiving mercury-contaminated wastewater c

Contributions of biotic (cell-mediated) and abiotic (mineral-mediated) reactions to carbon tetrachloride (CT) transformation were studied in a model iron-reducing system that used hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) as the electron acceptor, acetate as the substrate, and Geobacter metallireducens as a representative dissimilative iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB). Over a period of 2-3 weeks, nanoscale magnetite particles, Fe3O4, were consistently formed as a product of iron respiration in this system. CT transformation rates were measured independently in resting cell suspensions of G. metallireducens or i
