Epidemiologic trends and geographic patterns of fatal opioid intoxications in Connecticut, USA: 1997-2007.

BACKGROUND: The leading cause of injury death among adults in Connecticut (CT), USA is drug poisonings. We analyzed the epidemiology and geographic distribution of opioid-involved accidental drug-involved intoxication deaths ("overdoses") in CT over an 11-year period. METHODS: We reviewed data from 1997 to 2007 on all adult accidental/undetermined drug intoxication deaths in CT that were referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). Regression analyses were conducted to uncover risk factors for fatal opioid-involved intoxications and to compare heroin- to prescription opioid- a

Of water and worms: Guinea worm re-emergence in Niger.

This paper aims to provide a better understanding of the re-emergence of Guinea worm into the water bodies of the Tillabéri region of the Niger Sahel. It examines the period of re-emergence and subsequent decline from 2002 until 2006. Using a geographic information system combined with a statistical approach to examine the location data of lakes with Guinea worm-associated cases, it is shown that the locations of population centers with cases of Guinea worm disease, the locations of lakes infected with Guinea worm larva, and features of the built environment are correlated in space.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of soil bacterial and fungal communities at a small scale.

BACKGROUND: Soil is a common form of trace evidence in forensic investigations, and its indigenous microbial communities hold promise for geographic provenance determination. However, most existing studies focus on macro-scale soil microbial patterns, with limited understanding of their small-scale spatiotemporal dynamics. This study collected soil samples across multiple time points from a small-scale forest site in Guiyang, China, to characterize bacterial and fungal community distributions. We aimed to quantify the effects of temporal variation and geographic distance on soil bacterial and

Gangbangin on the [Face]Book: Understanding Online Interactions of Chicago Latina/o Gangs.

OBJECTIVES: This study examines gang group processes on the digital street to understand if gang processes in the online environment mimic those on geographic street corners. Specifically, this paper examines what conditions influence whether gangs interact negatively or positively in online spaces and how online interactions relate to geographic proximity of gangs. METHODS: This study uses digital trace data web scraped from a public Facebook about Chicago Latina/o gangs combined with geographic locations of gang territories. Negative binomial regression models are used to investigate the co

Geographic Range of Recreational Water-Associated Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis, United States, 1978-2018.

Naegleria fowleri is a free-living ameba that causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a rare but usually fatal disease. We analyzed trends in recreational water exposures associated with PAM cases reported during 1978-2018 in the United States. Although PAM incidence remained stable, the geographic range of exposure locations expanded northward.

Endemic Mycoses in 2026: can we keep the pace of redrawing maps?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The dimorphic fungal infections were classically grouped as endemic mycoses due to their restricted geographic distribution. However, their original geographic distribution dates from the twentieth century and true prevalence and distribution of these infections is limited by subclinical presentations, lack of healthcare provider awareness, lack of diagnostic capacity, and incomplete reporting. In this review, we discuss the new geographic distribution of endemic mycoses and the factors influencing its expansion. RECENT FINDINGS: There has been an increase in incidence and

Diversification and Distribution of Ruminant Chlamydia abortus Clones Assessed by MLST and MLVA.

Chlamydia abortus, an obligate intracellular bacterium, is the most common infectious cause of abortion in small ruminants worldwide and has zoonotic potential. We applied multilocus sequence typing (MLST) together with multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) to genotype 94 ruminant C. abortus strains, field isolates and samples collected from 1950 to 2011 in diverse geographic locations, with the aim of delineating C. abortus lineages and clones. MLST revealed the previously identified sequence types (STs) ST19, ST25, ST29 and ST30, plus ST86, a recently-assigned type on

Environmental risk from Lyme disease in central and eastern Canada: a summary of recent surveillance information.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne disease in the temperate world. It is emerging in central and eastern Canada due to spread of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis into and within Canada to form new areas of environmental risk known as Lyme disease-endemic areas. Identifying the geographic location of Lyme disease-endemic areas is important to identify the population at risk, target interventions, and inform the clinical diagnosis of Lyme disease patients. OBJECTIVE: To provide an up-to-date picture of current and emerging areas of Lyme disease risk in eastern

Molecular epidemiology of geographically dispersed Vibrio cholerae, Kenya, January 2009-May 2010.

Numerous outbreaks of cholera have occurred in Kenya since 1971. To more fully understand the epidemiology of cholera in Kenya, we analyzed the genetic relationships among 170 Vibrio cholerae O1 isolates at 5 loci containing variable tandem repeats. The isolates were collected during January 2009-May 2010 from various geographic areas throughout the country. The isolates grouped genetically into 5 clonal complexes, each comprising a series of genotypes that differed by an allelic change at a single locus. No obvious correlation between the geographic locations of the isolates and their genotyp

Sunlight and human cataracts.

Studies of the cataractous lenses of humans in three different geographic locations indicate that where the ultraviolet components of sunlight are more intense, dark brown cataracts result at a higher frequency than in locations where they are weak. Individuals exposed to sunlight regularly by virtue of their outdoor occupations seemed to develop this dark brown type of cataract much more frequently than those who work indoors. The biochemical characteristics of all brunescent cataracts were found to be very similar, whether derived from individuals exposed to high or low levels of sunlight. T

Probabilistic data linkage to study the epidemiology of unintentional fatal drowning in a large metropolitan region.

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to study the epidemiology of drowning at the regional level because of multiple data sources, many of which have a high degree of unstandardized and missing data. We aimed to link multiple datasets to identify demographics and geographic locations of unintentional fatal drowning in a metropolitan region and compare linked data with vital statistic data. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included unintentional drowning fatalities among persons of all ages in metropolitan Houston between 2016 and 2022. Probabilistic linking was used to link multiple datasets and ge

Evaluating evidence for co-geography in the Anopheles-Plasmodium host-parasite system.

The often tight association between parasites and their hosts means that under certain scenarios, the evolutionary histories of the two species can become closely coupled both through time and across space. Using spatial genetic inference, we identify a potential signal of common dispersal patterns in the Anopheles gambiae and Plasmodium falciparum host-parasite system as seen through a between-species correlation of the differences between geographic sampling location and geographic location predicted from the genome. This correlation may be due to coupled dispersal dynamics between host and

Geographic tongue and psoriasis: clinical, histopathological, immunohistochemical and genetic correlation - a literature review.

Geographic tongue is a chronic, inflammatory, and immune-mediated oral lesion of unknown etiology. It is characterized by serpiginous white areas around the atrophic mucosa, which alternation between activity, remission and reactivation at various locations gave the names benign migratory glossitis and wandering rash of the tongue. Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease with frequent cutaneous involvement and an immunogenetic basis of great importance in clinical practice. The association between geographic tongue and psoriasis has been demonstrated in various studies, based on observatio

Effects of georeferencing effort on mapping monkeypox case distributions and transmission risk.

BACKGROUND: Maps of disease occurrences and GIS-based models of disease transmission risk are increasingly common, and both rely on georeferenced diseases data. Automated methods for georeferencing disease data have been widely studied for developed countries with rich sources of geographic referenced data. However, the transferability of these methods to countries without comparable geographic reference data, particularly when working with historical disease data, has not been as widely studied. Historically, precise geographic information about where individual cases occur has been collected

Tick-borne diseases.

Tick-borne diseases have their peak incidence in the spring and summer. The different infections caused by tick vectors have certain geographic locations and unique clinical presentations. The most common tick-transmitted infection is Lyme disease. Early diagnosis of tick-borne disease is essential so that effective and, in some cases, lifesaving antibiotic therapy can be instituted. Preventive measures are simple.

Phylogeographic reconstruction using air transportation data and its application to the 2009 H1N1 influenza A pandemic.

Influenza A viruses cause seasonal epidemics and occasional pandemics in the human population. While the worldwide circulation of seasonal influenza is at least partly understood, the exact migration patterns between countries, states or cities are not well studied. Here, we use the Sankoff algorithm for parsimonious phylogeographic reconstruction together with effective distances based on a worldwide air transportation network. By first simulating geographic spread and then phylogenetic trees and genetic sequences, we confirmed that reconstructions with effective distances inferred phylogeogr

Predictive risk mapping of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in Saskatchewan horses.

The objective of this study was to develop a model using equine data from geographically limited surveillance locations to predict risk categories for West Nile virus (WNV) infection in horses in all geographic locations across the province of Saskatchewan. The province was divided geographically into low-, medium-, or high-risk categories for WNV, based on available serology information from 923 horses obtained through 4 studies of WNV infection in horse populations in Saskatchewan. Discriminant analysis was used to build models using the observed risk of WNV in horses and geographic division

Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping diagnostic services and sub-district administrative boundaries in tuberculosis: A novel attempt from India.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a leading cause of death globally, with India accounting for 25% of the total disease burden. A significant barrier to elimination is delayed or inequitable access to diagnostic services, often accelerated by a lack of granular administrative health boundaries for effective planning. Additionally, identifying the exact locations of TB diagnostic facilities is relevant for understanding the geographic coverage of diagnostic services. METHODS: - Diverse types of data were obtained from multiple health and non-health sources. The study mapped 77 Tuberculosis
