Investigating Barriers to Tuberculosis Evaluation in Uganda Using Geographic Information Systems.

Reducing geographic barriers to tuberculosis (TB) care is a priority in high-burden countries where patients frequently initiate, but do not complete, the multi-day TB evaluation process. Using routine cross-sectional study from six primary-health clinics in rural Uganda from 2009 to 2012, we explored whether geographic barriers affect completion of TB evaluation among adults with unexplained chronic cough. We measured distance from home parish to health center and calculated individual travel time using a geographic information systems technique incorporating roads, land cover, and slope, and

Leveraging Open-Source Geographic Databases to Enhance the Representation of Landscape Heterogeneity in Ecological Models.

Wildlife abundance and movement are strongly impacted by landscape heterogeneity, especially in cities which are among the world's most heterogeneous landscapes. Nonetheless, current global land cover maps, which are used as a basis for large-scale spatial ecological modeling, represent urban areas as a single, homogeneous, class. This often requires urban ecologists to rely on geographic resources from local governments, which are not comparable between cities and are not available in underserved countries, limiting the spatial scale at which urban conservation issues can be tackled. The rece

Molecular epidemiology of tick-borne encephalitis virus: cross-protection between European and Far Eastern subtypes.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus isolates from widely separated geographic regions of the USSR, six isolates from Hungary and one from France were compared with the European and Far Eastern prototype viruses. Peptide mapping by limited proteolysis yielded similar patterns for five selected isolates from the USSR. All isolates from Hungary and France exhibited the same reactivity pattern with a panel of 16 protein E-specific monoclonal antibodies, whereas 10 out of 12 isolates from the Soviet Union showed minor differences at certain epitopes. However, no correlation between geographic origin of t

Mapping violence and policing as an environmental-structural barrier to health service and syringe availability among substance-using women in street-level sex work.

BACKGROUND: Within street-based sex work and substance-using populations, there is growing evidence to support the role of place, both physical setting and social meanings attached to place, in mediating the effectiveness and reach of health and harm reduction services. METHODS: Social mapping was used to explore how health service and syringe availability may be impacted at the geographic level by avoidance of physical settings due to violence and policing among women in street-level sex work. Through a community-based research partnership and extensive peer-led outreach over a 6-month perio

Relevance of the uMap Collaborative Platform as Support for Choropleth Mapping of a Traffic-Light Statistical Signal Atlas of All-Cause Mortality During the First French Lockdown: Geospatial Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The growing need for and interest in geomatics in the medical sector, as well as the pandemic crisis, led us to create a France-wide geomatics project aimed at producing several atlases of all-cause mortality at the municipal and submunicipal district levels via uMap France, a free and open-source collaborative map-sharing platform. In 2020, we decided to circumvent the obstacle of accessing detailed COVID-19 data by adopting a mortality-based approach to map the consequences of the crisis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the uMap study was to provide a webmapping platform with original vis

Dynamic assessment of exposure to air pollution using mobile phone data.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to air pollution can have major health impacts, such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Traditionally, only the air pollution concentration at the home location is taken into account in health impact assessments and epidemiological studies. Neglecting individual travel patterns can lead to a bias in air pollution exposure assessments. METHODS: In this work, we present a novel approach to calculate the daily exposure to air pollution using mobile phone data of approximately 5 million mobile phone users living in Belgium. At present, this data is collected and stor

Spatial-temporal mapping of hand foot and mouth disease and the long-term effects associated with climate and socio-economic variables in Sichuan Province, China from 2009 to 2013.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a common infectious disease caused by enteroviruses. The annual HFMD incidence increased from 37.6/100,000 in 2008 to 139.6/100,000 in 2014 in mainland China. In this study, we try to model spatial-temporal association between HFMD incidence and climate and socio-economic variables. METHODS: The annual numbers of reported cases of HFMD and populations from 2009 to 2013 were obtained from the Chinese infectious disease surveillance system. The climate data were obtained from a data sharing website hosted by the China Meteorological Administrat

Mapping 'partially resistant', 'fully resistant', and 'super resistant' malaria.

Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) is used throughout Africa for intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) of malaria, but resistance threatens its efficacy. We found marked regional differences in the genotypes responsible for SP resistance when mapping recent surveys of dihydrofolate reductase (dhfr) and dihydropteroate synthase (dhps) mutations. In West Africa, a 'partially resistant' combination of dhfr N51I, N59R, and S108N with dhps A437G predominates, whereas in East Africa the 'fully resistant' combination of dhfr N51I, N59R, and S108N with dhps A437G+K540E is found. There are three East Afr

Visualization of spatiotemporal behavior of discrete maps via generation of recursive median elements.

Spatial interpolation is one of the demanding techniques in Geographic Information Science (GISci) to generate interpolated maps in a continuous manner by using two discrete spatial and/or temporal data sets. Noise-free data (thematic layers) depicting a specific theme at varied spatial or temporal resolutions consist of connected components either in aggregated or in disaggregated forms. This short paper provides a simple framework: 1) to categorize the connected components of layered sets of two different time instants through their spatial relationships and the Hausdorff distances between t

Disease mapping of early- and late-stage cancer to monitor inequalities in early detection: a study of cutaneous malignant melanoma.

We consider disease mapping of early- and late-stage cancer, in order to identify and monitor inequalities in early detection. Our method is demonstrated by mapping cancer incidence at high geographical resolution using data on 10,302 cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) cases within the 3.7 million population of South-West Sweden. The cases were geocoded into small-areas, each with a population size between 600 and 2600 and accessible socio-demographic data. Using the disease mapping application Rapid Inquiry Facility (RIF) 4.0, we produced regional maps to visualise spatial variations in stage

Mapping of lymphatic filariasis in India.

The derivation of detailed epidemiological maps, at the relevant spatial resolution, is being increasingly recognized as vital to the effective design and implementation of successful programmes for the control of parasites and their vectors. Geographical information systems (GIS) and a recently complied database on the distribution of lymphatic filariasis in India have now been used to develop the first maps at district-level (i.e. the level at which control against this parasite will be enacted in India) of filariasis endemicity in this country. The derived maps indicate both the substantial

Risk Mapping of Visceral Leishmaniasis: A Spatial Regression Model for Attica Region, Greece.

Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic to the Attica region of Greece. The geographical distribution of VL cases was analyzed employing methods of spatial analysis in a GIS environment. A geographic database was constructed including data for the disease cases and environmental factors, such as land cover types, stray dog population, and socioeconomic factors. Classic and spatial regression models are presented that suggest the factors contributing most to the incidence of leishmaniasis are green urban areas and the population of stray dogs in the municipalities of Attica region. The results o
