CHARACTERISTICS OF WEST SYNDROME IN GEORGIA, PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF THE PROSPECTIVE STUDY.

West syndrome hasn't been thoroughly investigated in Georgia. The purposes of our study were a) to assess the clinical and etiological peculiarities of West syndrome, based on MRI data and its relation to the long-term outcome; b) to assess the evolution of West syndrome and its relation to patient characteristics; c) to compare the efficacies of treatments with ACTH and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs); d) to evaluate the neuropsychological outcome after 12 and 24 months and their early predictors. We evaluated 31 patients (17 male, 14 female) with infantile spasms. Mean age of seizure onset was 6.

Trends in the prevalence of childhood asthma and allergy in Western part of Georgia.

Internatinal time trend analyses, using the ISAAC (Phase Three) protocol, have yielded variable results and observed a rise in prevalence especially in areas where allergic diseases were previously less common. In 2003 and 2012, we performed cross-sectional studies in Kutaisi (western part of Georgia) schoolchildren aged 6-7 and 13-14 yr., using the validated ISAAC methodology, aiming to provide the prevalence trends of asthma and allergy in this population. Both cross-sectional studies were carried out in the same city, same season and used identical methodologies. In 2003, number of particip

Primary headache disorders in the Republic of Georgia: prevalence and risk factors.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the 1-year prevalences of migraine and tension-type headache (TTH), and identify their principal risk factors, in the general population of the Republic of Georgia. METHODS: In a community-based door-to-door survey, 4 medical residents interviewed all biologically unrelated adult members (>/=16 years) of 500 adjacent households in Tbilisi, the capital city, and 300 in rural Kakheti in eastern Georgia, using a previously validated questionnaire based on International Headache Society diagnostic criteria. RESULTS: The target population included 1,145 respondents, 690 (60

Hypersomnolence and sleep-related complaints in metropolitan, urban, and rural Georgia.

Persistent daytime hypersomnolence is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, but its prevalence in the population has been poorly documented. This study sought to characterize the prevalence of persistent daytime hypersomnolence, difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep, unrefreshing sleep, snoring, and the presence of physician-diagnosed sleep disorders in metropolitan, urban, and rural US Georgia populations. Between September 2004 and July 2005, a total of 6,530 randomly selected well and unwell adults, identified by screening interviews of 10,837 households (contacted by

Long-term outcomes of 217 botulism cases in the Republic of Georgia.

BACKGROUND: The acute paralytic syndrome of botulism has been well-described; however, little is known about its long-term consequences. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study in the Republic of Georgia to evaluate the health of patients > or =6 months after they had experienced an episode of botulism. Case patients were selected on the basis of who had had a clinical diagnosis of foodborne botulism reported to the national surveillance system from 1998 through 2003. Three control subjects were randomly selected from each patient's community. RESULTS: We located 217 patients who had had

Seroprevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi in raccoons from South Carolina and Georgia.

Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of American trypanosomiasis or Chagas' disease, is of both medical and veterinary importance as is evidenced by chronic phase myocarditis in humans and dogs. Further, T. cruzi has been reported from over 20 species of wildlife reservoir hosts in the USA, with raccoons (Procyon lotor) and opossums (Didelphis virginiana) being the most common. Whereas previous studies on T. cruzi in raccoons have included only culture and direct examination of blood, the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) was used in the current study to detect anti-T. cruzi an

Aflatoxin levels in corn available as wild turkey feed in Georgia.

Samples of corn available as wildlife feed from retailers throughout Georgia (USA) were collected during April 1997 and analyzed for aflatoxin to determine if levels harmful to wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) were present. Three of 31 (10%) samples collected from a 40-country area were positive. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay qualitatively determined that two samples contained from 0 to 20 ppb aflatoxin. A chromatography analysis of a third sample measured 380 ppb total aflatoxin. A small percentage of our sample of wildlife feed collected during one season contained levels of aflatox

Concomitant mycotic and verminous pneumonia in a blue jay from Georgia.

An emaciated, moribund, male blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) was collected in Georgia (USA) and died shortly after capture. Necropsy revealed nine large nematodes identified as Diplotriaena tricuspis in the thoracic and abdominal air sacs and within the pericardial sac. Multiple mycotic granulomas also were observed in the lungs and air sacs, and fungal culture of these lesions yielded pure growth of Aspergillus fumigatus. Histologic examination of the lungs revealed disseminated granulomatous inflammation containing both larvated nematode eggs and abundant fungal hyphae. This is the first desc

Evidence of onchocerciasis in Georgia cattle: longitudinal survey of a small herd.

Between November, 1974, and March, 1976, skin biopsies were taken at 12 different times from a small herd of 8 to 10 cattle near Lawrenceville, Ga. Samples were incubated for 4 to 6 hours in Hanks' balanced salt solution and centrifuged, and the sediment was examined microscopically for microfilariae. Microfilariae were consistently found in 4 of 10 animals over a 12-month period; numbers of microfilariae ranged from 1 to 211, with a mean of 3.42, 12.89, 17.31, and 27.53 per 4-mm-diameter biopsy from the 4 individual animals. The parasite was evidently being transmitted on the farm, as evidenc

University students' mental health amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in Georgia.

AIMS: We aimed to identify the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and suicidality and identify relevant risk and protecting factors among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Georgia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an anonymous online survey (n = 984, convenience sample by approaching all universities in Georgia and some student organizations) using valid instruments (e.g., STAI to assess anxiety, CES-D for depression, and RASS to assess suicidality). We calculated frequencies and prevalence and applied regression analysis and Chi-square tests to identify risk and protecti

Georgia Leverages Telehealth to Expand HIV Care Management in Underserved Areas.

INTRODUCTION: The Southeast U.S. and Georgia in particular are disproportionally affected by HIV. A major barrier in Georgia to meeting the goals of Ending the HIV Epidemic in the U.S is lack of proximity to HIV care. To address this and other barriers, Georgia implemented a comprehensive HIV telehealth system, including telemedicine to provide remote care through clients' local medical homes. In addition, a telementoring program (Project Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) was initiated to strengthen the HIV provider workforce in Georgia. METHODS: A total of 60 telemedicine solution

Classifying recurrent Mycobacterium tuberculosis cases in Georgia using MIRU-VNTR typing.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent tuberculosis (TB) is one of the main challenges in TB control. Genotyping based on Mycobacterial Interspersed Repetitive Units-Variable Tandem Repeats (MIRU-VNTR) has been widely used to differentiate between relapse and reinfection, which are the two main causes of recurrent TB. There is a lack of data regarding the causes of TB recurrence in Georgia, and while differentiating between relapse and reinfection plays a key role in defining appropriate interventions, the required genotyping methodologies have not been implemented. The objective of this study was to impleme

Genotyping of newly isolated infectious bronchitis virus isolates from northeastern Georgia.

Sixteen infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) field isolates obtained from vaccinated commercial broiler chickens showing clinical respiratory disease were characterized by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis of the hypervariable region of the S1 spike glycoprotein gene. The genetic relationship among these variants and reference strains was determined by phylogenetic analysis and use of the basic local alignment search tool. All the isolates formed a distinct phylogenetic group with very short branched distances, suggesting that isolates had a similar origin. All

Ambient air pollution and cardiovascular malformations in Atlanta, Georgia, 1986-2003.

Associations between ambient air pollution levels during weeks 3-7 of pregnancy and risks of cardiovascular malformations were investigated among the cohort of pregnancies reaching at least 20 weeks' gestation that were conceived during January 1, 1986-March 12, 2003, in Atlanta, Georgia. Surveillance records obtained from the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, which conducts active, population-based surveillance on this cohort, were reviewed to classify cardiovascular malformations. Related Melioidosis Cases with Unknown Exposure Source, Georgia, USA, 1983-2024.

We identified 4 cases of presumptive autochthonous melioidosis during 1983-2024 in Georgia, USA. Epidemiologic investigation identified no recent international travel before illness; all cases were geographically linked, and 3 patients became ill after a severe weather event. Bioinformatic analyses revealed Burkholderia pseudomallei genome sequences were highly related, suggesting a shared exposure.

High risk of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis following measles outbreaks in Georgia.

OBJECTIVE: To describe cases and estimate subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) risk following large-sale measles outbreaks in Georgia. A rare, fatal late complication of measles, SSPE is often overlooked in assessments focused on the acute illness. Georgia had 8377 and 11,495 reported measles cases during the 2004-2005 and 2013-2015 outbreaks, respectively, but SSPE burden has not been assessed. METHODS: SSPE cases diagnosed during 2008-2017 were identified from hospitalization registries in major neurological departments likely to admit SSPE patients. Information on reported measles ca
