Allergic alveolitis due to wood-rot fungi.

Farmer's lung is rare in Australia whereas allergic alveolitis due to domestic fungal exposure ("domestic allergic alveolitis") is common. However there has been no systematic analysis of the fungi responsible for domestic allergic alveolitis in Australia. The aim of this study was to determine the sources and types of fungi that cause this type of alveolitis in Australia. Twelve subjects with recently diagnosed, biopsy proved, alveolitis thought on clinical grounds to be due to domestic fungal exposure were studied. The houses of all subjects were inspected, and fungal samples were taken. All

Addressing the Concern of Orange-Yellow Fungus Growth on Palm Kernel Cake: Safeguarding Dairy Cattle Diets for Mycotoxin-Producing Fungi.

Palm kernel cake (PKC), a byproduct of palm oil extraction, serves an important role in Ecuador's animal feed industry. The emergence of yellow-orange fungal growth in PKC on some cattle farms in Ecuador sparked concerns within the cattle industry regarding a potential mycotoxin-producing fungus on this substrate. Due to the limited availability of analytical chemistry techniques in Ecuador for mycotoxin detection, we chose to isolate and identify the fungus to determine its association with mycotoxin-producing genera. Through molecular identification via ITS region sequencing, we identified t

[Pulmonary infection caused by Blastoschizomices capitatus].

Geotrichum capitatum, now known as Blastoschizomyces capitatus, can be responsible for several opportunistic infections (systemic infection or localized at lungs, liver, kidney, encephalitis or meningitis) in an immunocompromised host, especially in those patients affected by leukaemia or under immunosuppressive therapies. A 66-year-old woman with polimyosite under steroid and immunosuppressant therapy was hospitalized in ICU for an acute respiratory distress with moderate hypoxaemia and normocapnia. Pulmonary X-ray revealed a bilateral pneumonia. Hypoxaemia became severe 48 hours later and th

Safety aspects and in vitro probiotic assessment of Kluyveromyces marxianus strains from neonatal faeces.

The isolation and identification of probiotic yeasts is increasing rapidly. In this context, the present study aimed to isolate and identify yeast strains from neonatal faeces in Erzurum province, Türkiye and to determine their probiotic characteristics. A total of 12 yeast strains were isolated and genotypic characterization revealed the presence of seven different species, including Kluyveromyces marxianus, Candida spp. Clavispora lusitaniae, Geotrichum candidum, Trichophyton rubrum, Pichia cactophila, and Meyerozyma guilliermondii. The non-pathogenic and potentially probiotic characteristic

Geotrichosis Due to Magnusiomyces capitatus: A Severe Emerging Invasive Fungal Disease.

Geotrichosis is a rare opportunistic mycosis caused by emerging yeasts rarely associated with fungemia. We report a case of invasive Magnusiomyces capitatus (M. capitatus) infection in a neutropenic patient. A 71-year-old man with rectosigmoid cancer undergoing chemotherapy was admitted to the emergency department with septic shock. Laboratory tests revealed a severe inflammatory response, agranulocytosis, and acute renal failure requiring hemodialysis via a femoral catheter. An infectious workup performed at the Central Parasitology and Mycology Laboratory of Ibn Sina University Hospital in R

Biological diversity of yeasts in the gastrointestinal tract of weaned piglets kept under different farm conditions.

The study was conducted to determine yeasts present in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of piglets kept under experimental farm (EF) and commercial farm (CF) conditions. Ninety five German Landrace full- and half-sibling piglets were sacrificed at 39 days of age. Sixty eight piglets were weaned at 28th day of life, when they were offered one diet ad libitum. Twenty seven piglets remained unweaned by their dams. None of the piglets received any creep feed before weaning. Digesta samples were collected from 1/3 distal small intestine (SI), caecum and proximal colon. One hundred seventy three col

Dipodascus starmeri sp. nov., a new species of yeast occurring in cactus necroses.

In a previous publication describing the geographic distribution of yeasts associated with cactus necroses (W. T. Starmer, M.-A. Lachance, H. J. Phaff, and W. B. Heed, Evol. Biol. 24:253-296, 1990), 127 isolates were identified as strains of Candida ingens van der Walt et van Kerken on the basis of morphology and certain phenotypic characteristics. Here we show by using DNA hybridization and additional phenotypic properties that these strains were misidentified and that they represent a minimum of three separate species that can be differentiated from C. ingens and from each other by utilizati

Profile of Invasive Fungal Infections in a Paediatric Haemato-Oncology Unit: A Five-Year Retrospective Cohort Study From a Tertiary Care Centre in South India.

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections (IFIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in paediatric haemato-oncology (PHO) patients. Empirical antifungal therapy in high-risk children must be informed by local epidemiological, species-level and antifungal-susceptibility data, yet contemporary Indian paediatric cohort data remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical, microbiological, therapeutic and outcome profile of probable and proven IFI in a tertiary care South Indian PHO unit over five years, and to benchmark the findings against contemporary international literature. Fungal signatures in a cadaver and a separated upper limb: insights from a forensic case study.

The application of fungi in forensic investigations remains limited, particularly in cases involving dismembered human remains. In this study, we characterized the mycobiome of a decomposing human body and a detached upper limb recovered from different locations using culture-dependent methods. A total of 23 fungal species were identified across four culture media and three incubation temperatures, including 20 species from the body and ten from the upper limb. The dominant taxa included Yarrowia lipolytica, Yarrowia deformans, Mucor hiemalis, and Geotrichum candidum. Notably, seven species we

We are reporting the case of an 82-year-old Yemeni patient, renal transplant recipient who was admitted to our institution and who subsequently developed disseminated infection with Saprochaete capitata. This pathogenic fungus is rarely reported in patients with solid organ trans-plants. Saprochaete capitata is an emerging fungal pathogen, ubiquitously spread in the environment. This is the second case to our knowledge of infection with Saprochaete capitata in a renal transplant patient. Our patient was treated for multiple nosocomial infections with prolonged antibiotic courses. He succumbed

Acetophenone reductase with extreme stability against a high concentration of organic compounds or an elevated temperature.

The gene encoding acetophenone reductase (APRD), a useful biocatalyst for producing optically pure alcohols, was cloned from the cDNA of Geotrichum candidum NBRC 4597. The gene contained an open reading frame that consisted of 1,029 nucleotides corresponding to 342 amino acid residues. The subunit molecular weight was calculated to be 36.7 kDa. The predicted amino acid sequence did not have significant similarity to those of the acetophenone reductase reported previously. The gene was inserted into the pET-21b(+) expression vector and expressed in Escherichia coli Rosetta™(DE3)pLysS by inducti

Species distribution and frequency of isolation of yeasts and dermatophytes from toe webs of diabetic patients.

The paper identifies fungal species, looking at the incidence of fungal isolation and risk factors influencing the development of fungal infection and colonization of interdigital spaces of the feet in 509 diabetic outpatients. Using standard mycologic diagnostic methods, fungi were detected in toe webs of 122 (24%) diabetic patients. The finding of fungi was twice as common in interdigital spaces of one (85/16.7% of the patients) than both feet (37/7.3% of the patients). Yeasts were the most common isolates (95/18.7% of the patients), followed by dermatophytic moulds (24/4.7% of the patients)

Fungal infections in cancer patients: an escalating problem.

Major advances in anticancer treatment have contributed to an increased frequency of severe fungal infections in patients with neoplastic diseases. Neutropenia remains the most important among the predisposing factors related to the malignancy or its treatment. Most fungal infections are caused by the commonly recognized opportunistic fungi Candida spp and Aspergillus spp, and the pathogenic fungi Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Coccidiodes immitis, and less often by Blastomyces dermatidis. However, recently newer pathogens such as Pheohyphomycetes, Hyalohyphomycetes, Zygomyce

Magnusiomyces clavatus fungemia treated with combination antifungals including isavuconazole in an immunocompromised pediatric patient: a case report.

Magnusiomyces clavatus, formerly Saprochaete clavata or Geotrichum clavatum, is an ascomycetous yeast found in the environment as well as the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts of humans. It has been described as an emerging, albeit rare, cause of invasive fungal disease affecting immunocompromised patients. Intrinsic resistance to fluconazole and echinocandins has been theorized; however, little else is known regarding optimal treatment regimens for this opportunistic pathogen. To our knowledge, only 13 infectious cases have been described in pediatric patients, all of which utilized a c

Microbiome-metabolome correlations across vertical stratification in Jiupei of strong-flavored baijiu fermentation.

The differences in the microbiota and metabolites from the different vertical stratification in Jiupei are obvious but not entirely clear. This study used high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics techniques to explore the microbiome and metabolites of varying vertical stratification in Jiupei and their relationships. The results showed that most beneficial metabolites, including pentadecanoic acid, ricinoleic acid, and epigallocatechin, were significantly higher in the lower Jiupei layer. Some volatile compounds gradually showed upregulation with increased Jiupei depth, mainly esters, keton

Quinalizarin as a potential antifungal drug for the treatment of Candida albicans fungal infection in cancer patients.

UNLABELLED: This study aims to analyze the antifungal properties of quinalizarin, a plant-derived compound with proven anticancer effects. Quinalizarin exhibited antifungal activity against opportunistic pathogenic Candida species and Geotrichum capitatum. The treatment with this anthraquinone reduced hyphal growth, inhibited biofilm formation, and damaged mature Candida albicans biofilms. Real-time RT-PCR revealed that quinalizarin downregulated the expression of hyphae-related and biofilm-specific genes. The flow cytometry method used in the study showed that both apoptosis and necrosis were
