A Consecutive Multi-Day High-Density Surface Electromyography Dataset Comprising 7 Grasps and 11 Gestures.

Surface electromyography (sEMG) records muscle electrical signals and reflects neuromuscular physiological behaviors. Recently, high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG), which allows non-invasive identification of motor unit action potential trains (MUAPTs) and direct access to underlining neural drive derived from the spinal cord, becomes a research hotspot. However, datasets comprising HD-sEMG signals remain limited, especially for multi-day conditions, leading to the lack of long-term investigation of motor neuron activities. This paper presents a 320-channel HD-sEMG dataset, CEMHSEY (ConsecutivE Multi-

The neural bases of meaningful intransitive gestures: A meta-analysis of lesion and fMRI studies.

Meaningful intransitive (MFI) gestures have long been used by clinicians and researchers to assess gesture production and recognition, especially in the context of neuropsychological disorders like apraxia. Their neural bases, however, remain unclear. The goal of this systematic, theory-driven meta-analysis of 6 lesion studies and 21 fMRI studies was to investigate the cerebral networks of MFI gestures. The results suggested that MFI gesture processing depends on a large, left-lateralized, cortico-subcortical, fronto-temporo-insular and cerebellar neural network also involved in social cogniti

Hierarchical strategy for sEMG classification of the hand/wrist gestures and forces of transradial amputees.

INTRODUCTION: The myoelectric control strategy, based on surface electromyographic signals, has long been used for controlling a prosthetic system with multiple degrees of freedom. Several methods classify gestures and force levels but the simultaneous real-time control of hand/wrist gestures and force levels did not yet reach a satisfactory level of effectiveness. METHODS: In this work, the hierarchical classification approach, already validated on 31 healthy subjects, was adapted for the real-time control of a multi-DoFs prosthetic system on 15 trans-radial amputees. The effectiveness of th

Enabling New Articulatory Gestures in Children With Persistent Speech Sound Disorders Using Ultrasound Visual Biofeedback.

Purpose This study evaluated ultrasound visual biofeedback treatment for teaching new articulations to children with a wide variety of speech sound disorders. It was hypothesized that motor-based intervention incorporating ultrasound would lead to rapid acquisition of a range of target lingual gestures with generalization to untreated words. Method Twenty children aged 6-15 years with a range of mild to severe speech disorders affecting a variety of lingual targets enrolled in a case series with replication. Of these, 15 children completed the intervention. All of the children presented with a

Crossover learning of gestures in two ideomotor apraxia patients: A single case experimental design study.

Crossover learning may aid rehabilitation in patients with neurological disorders. Ideomotor apraxia (IMA) is a common sequela of left-brain damage that comprises a deficit in the ability to perform gestures to verbal commands or by imitation. This study elucidated whether crossover learning occurred in two post-stroke IMA patients without motor paralysis after gesture training approximately 2 months after stroke onset. We quantitatively analysed the therapeutic intervention history and investigated whether revised action occurred during gesture production. Treatment intervention was to examin

What can iconic gestures tell us about the language system? A case of conduction aphasia.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists rarely analyse iconic gesture when assessing a client with aphasia, despite a growing body of research suggesting that language and gesture are part of either the same system or two highly integrated systems. This may be because there has been limited research that has systematically analysed iconic gesture production by people with aphasia. AIMS: The aim was to determine whether the gesture production of a participant with conduction aphasia was able to provide information about her language system. METHODS & PROCEDURES: The iconic gestures produce

Associations and dissociations of transitive and intransitive gestures in left and right hemisphere stroke patients.

The study investigated performance on pantomime and imitation of transitive and intransitive gestures in 80 stroke patients, 42 with left (LHD) and 38 with right (RHD) hemisphere damage. Patients were also categorized in two groups based on the time that has elapsed between their stroke and the apraxia assessment: acute-subacute (n=42) and chronic (n=38). In addition, patterns of performance in apraxia were examined. We expected that acute-subacute patients would be more impaired than chronic patients and that LHD patients would be more impaired than RHD patients, relative to controls. The hem

Imitating gestures and manipulating a mannikin--the representation of the human body in ideomotor apraxia.

Imitation of meaningless gestures was examined in patients with left brain damage (LBD), right brain damage (RBD) and controls. In addition to imitation on the own body, patients were asked to replicate the gestures on a life-sized mannikin. Manual dexterity was assessed by manipulation of beads, and general visuospatial abilities by block-design. LBD patients who displayed apraxia when imitating gestures on their own bodies scored dramatically worse than any other group when imitation was assessed on the mannikin. By contrast, on block-design and manipulation of beads patients with RBD were i

The Neurocognitive Bases of Meaningful Intransitive Gestures: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Neuropsychological Studies.

Researchers and clinicians have long used meaningful intransitive (i.e., not tool-related; MFI) gestures to assess apraxia-a complex and frequent motor-cognitive disorder. Nevertheless, the neurocognitive bases of these gestures remain incompletely understood. Models of apraxia have assumed that meaningful intransitive gestures depend on either long-term memory (i.e., semantic memory and action lexicons) stored in the left hemisphere, or social cognition and the right hemisphere. This meta-analysis of 42 studies reports the performance of 2659 patients with either left or right hemisphere dama

Apraxia Rehabilitation Using Gesture Training and Sequencing Tasks: A Case Report.

This case report describes the effects of combining gesture training and sequencing tasks to improve apraxia and enhance activities of daily living (ADLs) in a patient with left inferior parietal lobule and temporal lobe damage caused by a cardioembolic stroke. The intervention leveraged the patient's preserved semantic knowledge of tools. A male patient in his late 70s presented with significant impairments in gesture execution and action sequencing while retaining semantic knowledge of tool functions. Beginning on day 13 post-onset, the intervention included gesture training with photographs

Microcontroller Implementation of LSTM Neural Networks for Dynamic Hand Gesture Recognition.

Accelerometers are nowadays included in almost any portable or mobile device, including smartphones, smartwatches, wrist-bands, and even smart rings. The data collected from them is therefore an ideal candidate to tackle human motion recognition, as it can easily and unobtrusively be acquired. In this work we analyze the performance of a hand-gesture classification system implemented using LSTM neural networks on a resource-constrained microcontroller platform, which required trade-offs between network accuracy and resource utilization. Using a publicly available dataset, which includes data f

Understanding the influence of confounding factors in myoelectric control for discrete gesture recognition.

Discrete myoelectric control-based gesture recognition has recently gained interest as a possible input modality for many emerging ubiquitous computing applications. Unlike the continuous control commonly employed in powered prostheses, discrete systems seek to recognize the dynamic sequences associated with gestures to generate event-based inputs. More akin to those used in general-purpose human-computer interaction, these could include, for example, a flick of the wrist to dismiss a phone call or a double tap of the index finger and thumb to silence an alarm. Moelectric control systems have

Bioinspired Photoreceptors with Neural Network for Recognition and Classification of Sign Language Gesture.

This work addresses the design and implementation of a novel PhotoBiological Filter Classifier (PhBFC) to improve the accuracy of a static sign language translation system. The captured images are preprocessed by a contrast enhancement algorithm inspired by the capacity of retinal photoreceptor cells from mammals, which are responsible for capturing light and transforming it into electric signals that the brain can interpret as images. This sign translation system not only supports the effective communication between an agent and an operator but also between a community with hearing disabiliti

A Novel Magnetometer Array-based wearable system for ASL gesture recognition.

Hand gesture classification is of high importance in any sign language recognition (SLR) system, which is expected to assist individuals suffering from hearing and speech impairment. American sign language (ASL) comprises of static and dynamic gestures representing many alphabets, phrases, and words. ASL recognition system allows us to digitize communication and use it effectively within or outside the hearing-deprived community. Developing an ASL recognition system has been a challenge since some of the involved hand gestures closely resemble each other, and thereby it demands high discrimina

Shared and distinct routes in speech and gesture imitation: Evidence from stroke.

Dual-route models of high-level (praxis) actions distinguish between an "indirect" semantic route mediating meaningful gesture imitation, and a "direct" sensory-motor route mediates meaningless gesture imitation. Similarly, dual-route language models distinguish between an indirect route mediating production and repetition of words, and a direct route mediating non-word repetition. Although aphasia and limb apraxia frequently co-occur following left-hemisphere cerebrovascular accident (LCVA), it is unclear which aspects of these functional-neuroanatomic dual-route architectures are shared acro

Modeling one-handed grip strangulation: Intentionality of the gesture and age influence.

Strangulation is a violent act which can be lethal and is often studied in forensic context. The neck includes several anatomical elements that can evolve with aging. We therefore created a numerical human neck model including the main anatomical elements and simulated one-handed grip strangulation cases. In addition, we created 3 models each representing age groups: 20-30 years old, 30-50 years old and over 50 years old. The main changes between the different age groups are the ossification of the cartilages and the muscles mechanical properties. Several initial and boundary conditions have b

A Gesture-Controlled Rehabilitation Robot to Improve Engagement and Quantify Movement Performance.

Rehabilitation requires repetitive and coordinated movements for effective treatment, which are contingent on patient compliance and motivation. However, the monotony, intensity, and expense of most therapy routines do not promote engagement. Gesture-controlled rehabilitation has the potential to quantify performance and provide engaging, cost-effective treatment, leading to better compliance and mobility. We present the design and testing of a gesture-controlled rehabilitation robot (GC-Rebot) to assess its potential for monitoring user performance and providing entertainment while conducting

The relationship between limb apraxia and the spontaneous use of communicative gesture in aphasia.

This study investigated the relationship between limb apraxia, as assessed by a formal clinical test, and the production of spontaneous communicative gesture, as measured by a newly designed rating scale--the Nonvocal Communication Scale (NCS). Subjects were aphasic adult males with cerebrovascular lesions of the left hemisphere. The performance of aphasic patients on the praxis test and the NCS was independent of demographic, neuroanatomic, linguistic, or cognitive variables, except for global aphasics who were low-scoring across the board. There was a significant positive correlation, howeve

Co-speech gestures influence the magnitude and stability of articulatory movements: evidence for coupling-based enhancement.

Humans rarely speak without producing co-speech gestures of the hands, head, and other parts of the body. Co-speech gestures are also highly restricted in how they are timed with speech, typically synchronizing with prosodically-prominent syllables. What functional principles underlie this relationship? Here, we examine how the production of co-speech manual gestures influences spatiotemporal patterns of the oral articulators during speech production. We provide novel evidence that words uttered with accompanying co-speech gestures are produced with more extreme tongue and jaw displacement, an

Multimodal training using pitch gestures improves Mandarin tone recognition in noise for children with cochlear implants.

The present study investigates whether incorporating manual pitch gestures into audiovisual training can enhance the recognition of Mandarin lexical tones in prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants (CIs). Building on prior research that demonstrated the benefits of hand gestures in second-language tone learning, the study hypothesized that multimodal training integrating pitch gestures would be more effective than auditory-visual training alone. Eighteen preschool-aged CI users (15 with bimodal hearing) were assigned in equal numbers to either: (1) an experimental group receiving com
