Weak seed dormancy (SD) in rice tends to induce pre-harvest sprouting and impair seed quality and yield pre-harvest, whereas poor seed storability (SS) reduces these traits during post-harvest storage. Although multiple genes associated with these two traits have been cloned, the molecular genetic regulatory relationship between them remains unclear. To dissect the SD-SS correlation, this study compared SD and SS characteristic of 9311 (Xian/Indica) and Nipponbare (NIP, Geng/Japonica) via transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses. Results showed that NIP had strong SD but poor SS, while 9311 exh

Water scarcity is becoming increasingly severe, while the demand for stable and high-yield wheat production continues to rise. Under these circumstances, achieving the dual objectives of water conservation and yield enhancement through precise water management represents a critical challenge for sustainable agriculture, particularly in arid oasis regions. In this study, we investigated the dynamics of endogenous hormones and carbon metabolism in the basal first and second internodes (I1 and I2) of wheat stems under drip irrigation conditions. Special attention was given to the roles of non-stru

Plants are frequently exposed to high salinity, negatively affecting their development and productivity. This review examined the complex roles of membrane transporters (MTs) and phytohormones in mediating salt stress. MTs are crucial in capturing sodium ions (Na+) and maintaining a delicate balance between sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+), essential for supporting cellular homeostasis and enhancing overall plant health. These MTs were instrumental in regulating ion balance and promoting the absorption and segregation of vital nutrients, thereby enhancing salt stress tolerance. Various plant ho

The lily is a globally popular cut flower, and managing dormancy in lily bulblets is essential for continuous, year-round production. While nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to influence seed dormancy and germination, its role in dormancy release in lilies was previously unconfirmed. In this study, we investigated the effects of NO on dormancy release in lily bulblets using SNP and c-PTIO. Results showed that SNP treatment promoted dormancy release, while c-PTIO inhibited it. Measurement of endogenous NO levels in the bulbs, along with enzyme activities of NOS-like and NR and gene expression le

To explore the application potential of insect-derived functional microorganisms in short-cycle leafy vegetable production, we evaluated the effects of Serratia marcescens BRC-CXG2, isolated from larvae of Monochamus alternatus, on romaine lettuce in a pot experiment. Plant growth traits, biomass accumulation, nutritional quality, endogenous hormones, and rhizosphere microbial communities were systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that inoculation significantly promoted seedling development. Plant height and root length increased by 48.7% and 29.1%, respectively, while shoot and r

Tocochromanols, including tocopherols and tocotrienols, encompass a group of lipid antioxidants that are synthesized in chloroplasts of photosynthetic organisms. Tocochromanols are essential for mammals, because they provide vitamin E activity. In plants, tocochromanols can scavenge reactive oxygen species derived from photosynthesis. While most dicot plants including Arabidopsis thaliana produce tocopherols with a saturated side chain, tocotrienols carrying an unsaturated side chain are found in many monocot plants. Here, we present an overview on the current knowledge about the biosynthesis

From seed dormancy to pathogen attacks and senescence, many events in a plant's life are critically controlled by low-molecular-weight signaling molecules, called plant hormones. These master regulators include abscisic acid, auxins, brassinosteroids, cytokinins, ethylene, gibberellins, jasmonates, salicylates, and strigolactones. Years of research have unveiled multiple aspects of their biosynthesis, transport, signaling, functions, and interactions. With this knowledge, complex molecular networks have been established and refined over time in an attempt to explain how plant hormones collecti

Nitric oxide (NO) is a pivotal signaling molecule that plays a crucial role in the high-altitude adaptation and stress tolerance of medicinal plants. Under hypoxic conditions prevalent in high-altitude environments, NO facilitates oxygen sensing, regulates mitochondrial function, and influences ethylene biosynthesis, thereby enhancing plant resilience. This review elucidates NO's modulation of oxidative stress responses through interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) to maintain redox homeostasis. Additionally, NO's interaction with key phytohormones, including abscisic acid, ethylene,

Under changing climate conditions, heat stress (HS) severely impacts the sustainability of oil crops, particularly Brassica species. HS disrupts the growth and development of reproductive organs, leading to sterility, smaller stamens, abnormal spore development, and aberrant ovules. Consequently, yield and oil content in Brassica species, especially B. rapa, B. napus, and B. juncea, are significantly reduced, with B. napus being particularly vulnerable and unable to recover from heat shock. To counteract these effects, Brassica species have evolved various mechanisms, including the abscisic ac

Plants are central to global food production, and the pursuit of sustainability aims to enhance or preserve food quality while safeguarding the environment. Due to their immobility, plants are unable to evade unfavourable climatic setups or interactions with other living creatures. Upon their interaction with insect herbivores, plants face biotic stress, which is a constant challenge for plants, causing molecular, physiological, and biochemical changes and reducing their productivity. To combat biotic stress caused by herbivores, plants have evolved intricate defence mechanisms through growth

Photosynthesis is not only essential for plants, but it also sustains life on Earth. Phytohormones play crucial roles in developmental processes, from organ initiation to senescence, due to their role as growth and developmental regulators, as well as their central role in the regulation of photosynthesis. Furthermore, phytohormones play a major role in photoprotection of the photosynthetic apparatus under stress conditions. Here, in addition to discussing our current knowledge on the role of the phytohormones auxin, cytokinins, gibberellins, and strigolactones in promoting photosynthesis, we

Plant height is an important trait for architecture patterning and crop yield improvement. Although the pathways involving gibberellins and brassinosteroids have been well studied, there are still many gaps in our knowledge of the networks that control plant height. In this study, we determined that a dominant photoperiod- and thermo-sensitive dwarf mutant is caused by the active role of a mutated gene Photoperiod-thermo-sensitive dwarfism 1 (Ptd1), the wild-type of which encodes a non-specific lipid transfer protein (nsLTP). Ptd1 plants showed severe dwarfism under long-day and low-temperatur

A central paradigm in plant biology is that there is a trade-off between growth and defence. We propose that Epichloë fungal endophytes relieve this trade-off in plants by the fungal-derived production of antiherbivore alkaloids. Lolium perenne plants without (nil) and with Epichloë LpTG-3 sp. strain AR37 able (wild type (wt), ΔidtA) and unable (ΔidtM) to produce bioactive indole diterpene alkaloids were subjected to an exogenous application of gibberellin (GA) hormone followed by a challenge with Rhopalosiphum padi aphids. The GA-derived plant growth promotion increased the susceptibility to

In arid regions, water scarcity prompts the overuse of chemical growth regulators, posing ecological and health risks. This study investigates foliar application of microbial phytohormones as a sustainable alternative to mitigate the water deficit's negative impact on wheat growth and enhance crop productivity. Field experiments over two seasons evaluated the impact of microbial phytohormones microbial gibberellic acid (MGA3) and microbial ascorbic acid (MASA) on wheat yield and water productivity under three deficit irrigation levels: 100%, 80%, and 60% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc). Previous studies have suggested that Dense and Erect Panicle 1 (DEP1) interacts with Lose Plant Architecture 1 (LPA1) to regulate auxin transport by which DEP1-LPA1 modulates rice sheath blight (ShB) resistance. In this study, we identified that dep1 and lpa1 exhibited semi-dwarfism and dep1/lpa1 was shorter than the single mutant. LPA1 OX displayed higher height, whereas DEP1 OX exhibited similar height with wild-type. The gibberellic acid (GA)-dependent shoot growth was inhibited in dep1 and lpa1 while activated in LPA1 OX, suggesting that LPA1 may play a role in GA signaling transduction. Y

It was aimed to examine the role of gibberellic acid (GA) induced production of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in alleviating boron toxicity (BT) in tomato plants. Two weeks after germination, a solution consisting of GA (100 mg L-1) was sprayed once a week for 14 days to the leaves of cv. "SC 2121" of tomato under BT stress (BT; 2.0 mM). Before starting BT treatment, half of the seedlings were retained in a solution containing a scavenger of H2S, 0.1 mM hypotaurine (HT), for 12 h. Boron toxicity led to a substantial decrease in dry biomass, leaf water potential, leaf relative water content, chlorophy

Endo-1,4-beta-d-xylanase (EC 3.2.1.8, beta-d-xylanase) activity, and arabinoxylan (AX) level and extractability were monitored for the first time simultaneously in wheat kernels (Triticum aestivum cv. Glasgow) up to 24 days post-imbibition (DPI), both in the absence and presence of added gibberellic acid (GA). Roughly three different stages (early, intermediate and late) can be discriminated. Addition of GA resulted in a faster increase of water extractable arabinoxylan (WEAX) level in the early stage (up to 3-4 DPI). This increase was not accompanied by the discernible presence of homologues

Allotriploid poplar has a prominent vegetative growth advantage that impacts dramatically on lumber yield. The growth regulation is complex which involves abundant genes, metabolic and signaling pathways, while the information about the functional control process is very little. We used high-throughput sequencing and physiological index measurement to obtain a global overview of differences between allotriploid and diploid Populus. The genes related to plant growth advantage show a higher expression compared to diploid, and most of them are revolved around hormones, photosynthesis and product

Gibberellins (GAs) play a crucial regulatory role in the growth and development of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Through bioinformatics analyses, we identified a total of 39 GA2ox genes (encoding gibberellin 2-oxidases) in the cotton genome, designated GhGA2ox1 to GhGA2ox39. Based on phylogenetic analysis, these genes were classified into five groups. We further examined their gene structures, conserved motifs, and chromosomal distributions, revealing that members within the same group shared similar structural and motif organizations. Collinearity and cis-element analyses provided important

Hormone signaling and MADS-box genes regulate grapevine tendril and inflorescence growth divergence, offering molecular insights for managing tendril growth. Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) tendrils and inflorescences are homologous organs; however, their divergent development has important agronomic consequences because excessive tendril growth increases vineyard management costs. To explore the regulatory mechanisms, we compared the inflorescence-prone cultivar 'Einset Seedless' (ENT) with the tendril-prone cultivar 'Pinot Noir' (PN) using anatomical observation, transcriptome analysis of spec
