Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major global health issue, requiring accurate and noninvasive renal function assessment. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the standard measure, but current methods, including inulin clearance and creatinine-based estimation, have limitations in accuracy, invasiveness, and practicality. We investigated d-serine and d-asparagine as novel endogenous biomarkers for GFR evaluation. Renin-angiotensin system inhibition with either angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers has been shown to be effective in reducing progression of renal and cardiovascular disease. However, these medications are often associated with an initial reduction of estimated glomerular filtration rate, which is thought to be functional but may be of clinical significance.
