Ultra-processed foods and cardio-kidney-metabolic syndrome: A review of recent evidence.

The rapid increase in the consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) has become a significant global public health concern. UPFs are typically high in unhealthy fats, refined sugars, sodium, and other additives while being low in proteins, fibers, and other essential nutrients. Their high glycemic index and glycemic load lead to blood sugar spikes, contributing to metabolic dysregulation. Emerging evidence links UPF intake to the development of the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome and a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, such as all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. The p

The association between fertility diet score and polycystic ovary syndrome: A Case-Control study.

We performed this case-control study with 303 polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients and 588 age-matched controls to evaluate the relation between fertility diet score and odds of PCOS. In a fully adjusted model, the top tertile of fertility diet score compared to the bottom was associated with 22% [95%CI 0.71-0.93] lower odds of PCOS (P trend = 0.012). Ratio of monounsaturated to trans fat and vegetable protein was associated with a lower odd of PCOS. Animal protein intake and glycemic load were associated with a higher odd of PCOS. Based on our results, increasing the quality of the die

Design of a dietary intervention to assess the impact of a gluten-free diet in a population with type 1 Diabetes and Celiac Disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac Disease occurs at a 5-10 fold greater prevalence in patients with type-1 diabetes (T1D), despite this increased risk, there is limited objective evidence regarding the impact of a Gluten-Free Diet (GFD) in the large proportion of asymptomatic (30-70%) patients with both autoimmune diseases. Given the requirements and intricacies inherent to each condition, we describe the rationale and design a dietary curriculum specifically addressing the educational requirements for children and adults with CD and diabetes as part of the CD-DIET Study. METHODS AND DESIGN: The CD-DIET Stu

BMI and Prognostic Nutritional Index Are Independently and Positively Associated with Three Year Glycemic Change in Non-Diabetic Adults: A Community-Based Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Both adiposity and nutritional-inflammatory status influence glucose metabolism; however, their longitudinal associations with glycemic changes in non-diabetic populations remain unclear. We examined the independent, interactive, and joint associations of body mass index (BMI) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) with the 3-year change in HbA1c (ΔHbA1c). PNI, a composite marker of serum albumin and peripheral lymphocyte count, reflects both protein nutritional status and systemic immune competence. We hypothesized that BMI and PNI would each independently predict ΔHbA1

Beneficial effects of premeal almond load on glucose profile on oral glucose tolerance and continuous glucose monitoring: randomized crossover trials in Asian Indians with prediabetes.

BACKGROUND: Rapid conversion from prediabetes to diabetes and frequent postprandial hyperglycemia (PPHG) is seen in Asian Indians. These should be the target of dietary strategies. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that dietary intervention of preloading major meals with almonds in participants with prediabetes will decrease overall glycemia and PPHG. DESIGN: The study included two phases: (1) an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT)-based crossover randomized control study, the effect of a single premeal almond load (20 g) given before OGTT was evaluated (n = 60, 30 each period). (2) The continuous

Template-Free Self-Assembly of Hollow Microtubular Covalent Organic Frameworks for Oral Delivery of Insulin.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have demonstrated versatile application potential since their discovery. Although the structure of COFs is orderly arranged, the synthesis of controllable macrostructures still faces challenges. Herein, we report, to our knowledge, the first template-free self-assembled COF-18 Å hollow microtubule (MT-COF-18 Å) structure and its use for insulin delivery that exhibits high loading capacity, gastroresistance, and glucose-responsive properties. The hollow MT-COF-18 Å was achieved by a template-free method benefiting from the mixed solvents of mesitylene and diox

Are Inflamed Periodontal Tissues Endogenous Source of Advanced Glycation End-Products (AGEs) in Individuals with and without Diabetes Mellitus? A Systematic Review.

Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are heterogeneous compounds formed when excess sugars condense with the amino groups of nucleic acids and proteins. Increased AGEs are associated with insulin resistance and poor glycemic control. Recently, inflamed periodontal tissues and certain oral bacteria were observed to increase the local and systemic AGE levels in both normoglycemic and hyperglycemic individuals. Although hyperglycemia induced AGE and its effect on the periodontal tissues is known, periodontitis as an endogenous source of AGE formation is not well explored. Hence, this systematic

Implantable core-shell microneedles enable biphasic release of insulin for immediate and sustained glycemic regulation.

Insulin delivery is fundamental to diabetes management; however, conventional monophasic release systems often fail to achieve both rapid glycemic correction and sustained basal regulation. In this study, we developed an implantable core-shell biphasic-release microneedle (MN) system engineered to enable independent dual-stage insulin kinetics. The platform comprises a fast-dissolving gelatin shell and a sustained-release, self-healing porous poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) core, supported by a rigid resin micropillar array. The porous PLGA core was fabricated via cryogenic demolding and

Gut microbiota and gut-derived metabolites are altered and associated with dietary intake in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in the gut microbiota may act as mechanisms influencing the interplay between dietary factors and metabolic disorders. Studies have demonstrated that these alterations are associated with the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Within this context, we aimed to investigate associations between gut microbiota, gut-derived metabolites (short-chain fatty acids [SCFAs] and indole-3-propionic acid [IPA]), and dietary intake in women with PCOS. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 24 women with PCOS, previously recruited for two studies at our research

Prevalence of herpes virus in chronic periodontitis patients with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus: A clinico-microbiological study.

BACKGROUND: Unfavorable modifications of tooth and its surrounding structures result in periodontal complications. Viruses, in specific herpes virus, are known to increase disease severity in periodontal patients. Periodontitis is known to be more established in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) patients. Hence, the detection of the viral load, its effect on the prevalence of periodontitis and the glycemic control status of patients are to be evidenced. The study aimed to reveal the association of herpes virus with periodontal parameters and its prevalence in DM2 patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

The role of obesity, physical activity and dietary factors on the risk for breast cancer: Mexican experience.

We provide an overview of the role of adiposity, physical activity and diet in the risk for breast cancer in Mexican women. Lack of physical activity, diets high in carbohydrates and in glycemic load and low intake of folate and vitamin B12 have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer in Mexican women, in particular postmenopausal breast cancer. Other dietary factors that may begin to play a more relevant role in breast cancer incidence in Mexico are alcohol intake and vitamin D status. Recommendations to maintain a healthy weight, practice moderate physical activity, decrease intake

Improvement of glucose-primed intravenous glucose tolerance and correction of acute insulin decrement by glipizide in type II diabetes.

Improved glucose disposal after repeated intravenous (IV) glucose loads, known as the Staub effect, is absent in both type I and type II diabetes. Acute decrements of insulin secretion (AID) are observed following the early phase of insulin release on IV glucose stimulation in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The AID cannot be corrected by acute infusions of glyburide or glipizide, or phentolamine, or by glycemic control after 2 weeks of intensive insulin treatments. Fifteen male subjects had 3 hourly successive IV glucose tolerance tests before and after 6 months of glipizide,

A mixture analysis of urinary microplastic levels and risk of gestational diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Microplastic (MP) pollution is increasingly recognised as a pressing global environmental and public health concern, with mounting evidence suggesting its potential to disrupt metabolic processes. Pregnant women represent a particularly susceptible population, as physiological changes during gestation may amplify vulnerability to environmental toxicants. Despite these concerns, no prior studies have directly examined the relationship between internal MP exposure and glucose metabolism during pregnancy. Specifically, we aimed to assess the relationship between urinary MP concentrati

Chronologically scheduled snacking with high-protein products within the habitual diet in type-2 diabetes patients leads to a fat mass loss: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is the most relevant overnutrition disease worldwide and is associated to different metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and type-2 diabetes. Low glycemic load foods and diets and moderately high protein intake have been shown to reduce body weight and fat mass, exerting also beneficial effects on LDL-cholesterol, triglyceride concentrations, postprandial glucose curve and HDL-cholesterol levels. The present study aimed at studying the potential functionality of a series of low glycemic index products with moderately high protein content, as possible coadjuvants i
