Iron retention coupled with trade-offs in localized symbiotic effects confers tolerance to combined iron deficiency and drought in soybean.

Iron (Fe) and water availability are closely linked, yet the mechanisms of tolerance to these combined stresses in soybean remain poorly understood. This study elucidates host-microbe interactions in Clark (tolerant) and Arisoy (sensitive) genotypes exposed to Fe deficiency and drought. Clark exhibited resilience to stress through sustained osmotic regulation and nutrient uptake, in contrast to Arisoy. Particularly, Fe retention in Clark, along with up-regulation of ferritin-like proteins, may reduce oxidative stress by limiting Fenton reactions. In RNA-seq analysis, we observed the up-regulat

Stability and dynamics of fractional order frogeye leaf spot infection model with fungal density function.

This article presents a fractional-order model for frog eye leaf spot in soybean plants using the Caputo fractional derivative. The study validates the model, estimates solutions using reliable numerical algorithms. Comparing numerical simulations to earlier integer-order models demonstrates how well fractional calculus captures the intricacy of disease dynamics. The research aims to enhance soybean crop health and yield through improved disease control strategies and mathematical modeling of plant pathology. Using fractional calculus, the model is analyzed to determine its boundedness, positi

Evaluating an isotopic model for tracing the geographic origin of soybeans in Brazil.

The expansion of soybean cultivation in Brazil highlights the need for robust, auditable traceability tools. We present an end-to-end workflow for plant-origin assignment encompassing sample collection, stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O, δD), isoscape construction, probabilistic assignment, cropland masking, and external validation with blinded samples. Predictive maps were generated using regression-kriging. δ18O and δD showed strong spatial structure suitable for provenance inference, whereas δ13C and δ15N exhibited weak spatial autocorrelation and limited interpolative value. Lactulose in combination with soybean lecithin has a cryoprotective effect on probiotic taxa of bifidobacteria and Lactobacillaceae.

Lactulose is commonly used in pharmacy for constipation and hepatic encephalopathy treatment. The prebiotic effect of lactulose is also often mentioned. However, its cryoprotective effect in combination with lecithin on the main representatives of probiotics has not been tested yet. The 12 taxa of bifidobacteria and Lactobacillaceae members were used for the purpose. These were mixed in a ratio of 1:1 with lactulose + lecithin (finally 5.0% and 1.25%, respectively; LL). The 25% glycerol (G+) solution and cultures themselves were applied as positive and negative controls, respectively. Bacteria

Identification of geographical origins of soybean pastes using headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry by selecting sample-descriptive components with an Incremental Association Markov Blanket.

The identification of geographical origins of soybean pastes using headspace gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was attempted in this study. Since soybean paste was odor-rich, 36 components were identified in the imported and domestic soybean samples. t-Test, variable importance in projection (VIP), and Incremental Association Markov Blanket (IAMB) were employed to select proper components that could effectively discriminate the two sample groups. The discrimination accuracies were below 87.3 % when all 36 components were fed for either LDA, k-NN, or SVM. When the five t-test-selected compon

Use of soybean as an alternative protein source for welfare-orientated production of American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Soybean meal based diets have been suggested to cause gastrointestinal issues in certain species when used as a protein alternative. Using a randomized design, we tested 1,728 alligators in one of 13 communal pens offered one of two diets (seven pens (n = 928) of soybean-based protein diets and six pens (n = 800) of animal-based protein diets) to determine if soybeans would negatively affect the growth, hide quality, behavior and health, when compared with an otherwise identical diet using animal-based protein. Both feeds were nearly identical in composition for protein and fat percentages and

Pharmacological effects of D-Pinitol - A comprehensive review.

In recent years, the application of phytochemicals to prevent or treat diseases has received greater attention. These phytochemicals have little or no toxicity against healthy tissues and are thus considered as ideal compounds. An impressive number of modern drugs are obtained from natural sources based on their traditional value. D-Pinitol is a natural compound that is derived from soy and soy products. It is a potentially active molecule that belongs to the class of inositols. D-pinitol has been pharmacologically evaluated for its potent antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ca

Effect of two sorbents on the distribution and transformation of N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido acetic acid (N-EtFOSAA) in soil-soybean systems.

The broad application of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) precursors has led to their occurrence in soil, resulting in potential uptake and bioaccumulation in plants. In this study, we investigated the effect of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and montmorillonite on the distribution and transformation of a perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) precursor, N-ethyl perfluorooctane sulfonamido acetic acid (N-EtFOSAA), in soil-plant systems. The results showed that N-EtFOSAA at 300 μg/kg was taken up by soybean roots and shoots together with its transformation products (i.e., perfluorooctane sulfonamide (P

Presence-Absence Sampling Plans for Stink Bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) in the Midwest Region of the United States.

Stink bugs represent an increasing risk to soybean production in the Midwest region of the United States. The current sampling protocol for stink bugs in this region is tailored for population density estimation and thus is more relevant to research purposes. A practical decision-making framework with more efficient sampling effort for management of herbivorous stink bugs is needed. Therefore, a binomial sequential sampling plan was developed for herbivorous stink bugs in the Midwest region. A total of 146 soybean fields were sampled across 11 states using sweep nets in 2016, 2017, and 2018. T

Light sheet microscopy reveals more gradual light attenuation in light-green versus dark-green soybean leaves.

Light wavelengths preferentially absorbed by chlorophyll (chl) often display steep absorption gradients. This over-saturates photosynthesis in upper chloroplasts and deprives lower chloroplasts of blue and red light. Reducing chl content could create a more even leaf light distribution and thereby increase leaf light-use efficiency and overall canopy photosynthesis. This was tested on soybean cultivar 'Clark' (WT) and a near-isogenic chl b deficient mutant, Y11y11, grown in controlled environment chambers and in the field. Light attenuation was quantified using a novel approach involving light

Optimization of parameters of high-performance displacement chromatography for separation of soybean phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine.

Hundred milligrams of soybean phospholipids were successfully separated by using high-performance displacement chromatography (HPDC) on a 150mm x 4.6mm analytical silica column (3-5 microm packings) with dichloromethane-methanol (9:1, v/v) as carrier and ethanolamine as displacer. From the viewpoint of preparative separation, the effects of loading amount, concentration and flow-rate of displacer on separation efficiency were investigated using throughput and recovery as indices. The parameters were optimized by orthogonal test design and statistical analysis method. Under the optimum conditio

[Development and expression process of inheritance of resistance to cotton worm (Prodenia litura) in soybeans].

Cotton worm [Prodenia litura(Fabricius)] was one of the major leaf-feeders for soybeans in Southern China. Resistance to leaf-feeders has been recognized as one of the major breeding target traits in the National Soybean Breeding Program. This paper deals with the study of inheritance of resistance of soybeans to cotton worm [Prodenia litura(Fabricius)]. P1, P2, F1, F2, F2:3 of four susceptible x resistant crosses, i.e. N21297 x N1178-2-2, N21266 x N23860, N119-1 x N1178-2-2 and N21266 x N3039, were used in the study. The materials were planted in net room under artificial infestation in 1996-

The effects of selected rice and soybean pesticides on the eggs of Psorophora columbiae.

Twenty-five pesticides used in the production of rice and soybeans in Texas were tested in the laboratory to determine their toxicity to the eggs of Psorophora columbiae. A reduction in hatching rate occurred when eggs were treated with a herbicide formulation containing thiobencarb and with one containing a tank mixture of propanil and molinate. A carbaryl formulation induced hatching of eggs prior to their exposure to the hatching stimulus. Reduced survival to second instar of larvae hatching from treated eggs was observed with insecticide formulations of acephate, carbofuran, malathion, met

Hypochloremic alkalosis in infants associated with soy protein formula.

Thirteen infants, 2 to 10 months of age, developed hypochloremic alkalosis (serum chloride 59 to 92 mEq/l) while taking Neo-Mull-Soy (Syntex), a soy-based formula low in chloride (measured to be 0 to 2 mEq/l) but with considerable potassium citrate. Range of symptoms included lethargy, anorexia, mild spitting up, diarrhea, hematuria, and growth failure. Urine chloride excretion was less than 3 mEq/l. Plasma renin activity or aldosterone, measured in six infants, was elevated. All responded promptly to supplemental salt. One infant receiving Neo-Mull-Soy redeveloped alkalosis when supplemental

Four-year elevated atmospheric CO2 increases soybean seed yield and reshapes fatty acid composition without consistently altering crude oil content.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (eCO2) can stimulate crop productivity, but whether soybean oil-related responses remain stable under long-term CO2 enrichment remains unclear. We conducted a four-year open-top chamber experiment to examine seed yield, crude oil content, fatty acid composition, and oil quality indices in two soybean cultivars. Elevated CO2 consistently increased seed yield by 18-54%, with an average increase of 31%, but did not consistently increase crude oil content. Linoleic acid remained the dominant fatty acid, followed by oleic, palmitic, linolenic, and stearic acid

Synergistic Effects of a Microbial Amendment and Crushed Basalt: Soil Geochemical and Microbial Responses.

Over geologic timescales, the natural weathering of silicate minerals in soils and regolith regulates atmospheric CO2. Although this process is slow relative to anthropogenic emissions, several strategies have been proposed to accelerate this process for climate mitigation. These include the application of finely-ground silicate rock to increase mineral surface area (enhanced weathering, EW) and the use of microbes that catalyze mineral dissolution and CO2 biomineralization (microbial carbon dioxide mineralization, MCM). While both approaches show promise, their combined application has rarely

Research highlights in bacteriophages of fermented soybean foods.

Since their discovery, bacteriophages - viruses that infect bacteria - have fascinated scientists due to their ubiquity and potential applications in fields ranging from molecular biology to biotechnology and medicine. However, in fermentation processes that depend on bacterial activity, bacteriophages can pose a major threat by infecting and disrupting key microbial populations, leading to delayed or failed fermentations and resulting in economic losses. While the impact of bacteriophages on fermented dairy foods, such as yogurt and cheese, is well-documented, such knowledge is comparatively

A meniscus-inspired, environmentally robust, tough soybean-based adhesive.

The development of sustainable and versatile formaldehyde-free bio-based adhesives is currently a research focus in materials science. However, their practical extensive applications are often limited by their high brittleness and poor performance. Inspired by the robust structure of the meniscus (composed of a rigid framework of interwoven collagen fibers and a flexible buffer layer of the glycosaminoglycan matrix), this study utilizes poly(ethylene glycol itaconate) (EIA) synthesized from itaconic acid derived from the fermentation of crop straws as a buffer layer. Through hydrogen bonding,

Metabolic basis of quality deterioration in soybean variety Heihe 43 driven by storage time: Based on non-targeted metabolomics.

Soybeans are a high-quality plant-based food with both nutritional value and physiological activity, widely used in various fields such as food and feed. The quality evolution during soybean storage is a complex biological process regulated by multiple factors, but the mechanism of quality deterioration during long-term soybean storage is not yet fully understood. To reveal the underlying mechanism of soybean deterioration, this study constructed an accelerated storage simulation system under normal temperature and humidity conditions (20 °C, 65% RH) for 0-3 years, and explored the changes in
