Glyphosate and atrazine are among the most extensively applied herbicides worldwide and are often detected together in aquatic environments due to their concurrent agricultural use. This study investigated their individual and combined effects on Allium cepa at environmentally realistic concentrations: 62.5-1000 µg L⁻¹ for glyphosate and 0.25-4 µg L⁻¹ for atrazine. Five mixtures were also tested: M1 (62.5 + 0.25), M2 (125 + 0.5), M3 (250 + 1), M4 (500 + 2), and M5 (1000 + 4). Multiple endpoints were analyzed, including germination, root elongation, mitotic index, chromosomal and mitotic abnorm

In Uruguay, glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, applied across both small- and large-scale horticultural crops. Agricultural workers in direct contact with glyphosate during its application and handling constitute a vulnerable population exposed to this herbicide. The purpose of this report is to assess the health impacts of exposure to glyphosate on workers within the Uruguayan context. A PRISMA-guided bibliographic review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Scopus, and SciELO, Google Scholar, and academic and governmental repositories in Uruguay. Studies published between 2000

OBJECTIVE: Glyphosate is the most widely used pesticide worldwide. Few epidemiologic studies have examined the potential for neurotoxicity by glyphosate or its degradate, Aminomethylphosphonic Acid (AMPA). We examined associations of maternal urinary glyphosate and AMPA concentrations with child cognitive, social, and behavioural functioning in participants enrolled in the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) study.
METHODS: Maternal urinary glyphosate and AMPA concentrations were measured in first trimester spot urine samples. We assessed children's cognition (IQ) at 3

Glyphosate-based herbicides are extensively utilized in Neotropical agriculture for weed control. Despite their widespread application, concerns regarding water contamination and its consequential impacts on aquatic organisms persist. Notably, there remains a dearth of studies investigating the effects of glyphosate on Neotropical fish species. This study aimed to address this gap by investigating the morphophysiological effects of this herbicide on the liver, gills, and ovaries of Astyanax altiparanae, an ecological and economically important neotropical fish species. Forty individuals were a

Uncontrolled use of pesticides has caused a dramatic reduction in the number of pollinators, including bees. Studies on the effects of pesticides on bees have reported effects on both metabolic and neurological levels under chronic exposure. In this study, variations in the differential expression of head and thorax-abdomen proteins in Africanized A. mellifera bees treated acutely with sublethal doses of glyphosate and imidacloprid were studied using a proteomic approach. A total of 92 proteins were detected, 49 of which were differentially expressed compared to those in the control group (47

The present article critically and comprehensively reviews the most recent reports on smart sensors for determining glyphosate (GLP), an active agent of GLP-based herbicides (GBHs) traditionally used in agriculture over the past decades. Commercialized in 1974, GBHs have now reached 350 million hectares of crops in over 140 countries with an annual turnover of 11 billion USD worldwide. However, rolling exploitation of GLP and GBHs in the last decades has led to environmental pollution, animal intoxication, bacterial resistance, and sustained occupational exposure of the herbicide of farm and c

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, amphibian populations are declining drastically. One reason might be the use of pesticides including herbicides. The herbicide glyphosate is an inhibitor of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate (EPSP) synthase of the plant shikimate pathway, preventing the formation of aromatic amino acids and thus inducing plant death. Due to this specific action, GBH are considered nontoxic to non-target organisms. However, GBH impairs embryonic development of chickens, amphibians and fishes. So far, no detailed tissue- and organ-specific analysis of the effects of GBH during develop

BACKGROUND: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently classified glyphosate, the most used herbicide worldwide, as a probable human carcinogen. We inquired into the association between occupational exposure to glyphosate and risk of lymphoma subtypes in a multicenter case-control study conducted in Italy.
METHODS: The Italian Gene-Environment Interactions in Lymphoma Etiology (ItGxE) study took place in 2011-17 in six Italian centres. Overall, 867 incident lymphoma cases and 774 controls participated in the study. Based on detailed questionnaire information, occupational

Glyphosate, a common broad-spectrum herbicide, is a serious environmental pollutant that causes a significant threat to humans. Hence, there is a pressing task to remove glyphosate from the environment. Here, we report an excellent Fe3Ce1Ox catalyst synthesized via the one-step co-precipitation method for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade glyphosate at 25 °C. As a result, glyphosate is completely degraded with a high degradation rate of 400 mg L-1·h-1, and the TOC and TN removals are 85.6% and 80.8%, respectively. As proven by systematic characterizations, the Fe-Ce synergistic eff

Glyphosate is a commonly used non-selective herbicide in agriculture and aquafarms. Gastrointestinal, respiratory and cardiovascular symptoms are predominant manifestations of glyphosate poisoning. Cardiac dysfunction should be kept as a possibility in patients presenting with shock, and the treatment is mainly supportive. We present such a case.

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide worldwide. The International Agency for Research on Cancer in 2015 declared that glyphosate is probably carcinogenic to humans, noting a positive association for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The principal human data on glyphosate and NHL come from five case-control studies and two cohort studies. The case-control studies are at risk of recall bias resulting from information on exposure to pesticides being collected from cases and controls based on their memories. In addition, two of the case-control studies are additionally at risk of a form of selection bi

Glyphosate is a pesticide used for occupational and non-occupational purposes. Because glyphosate targets a metabolic pathway absent in animals, it is considered safe for humans. Yet, case reports of accidental exposure to concentrated solutions following self-inflicted poisoning documented neurological lesions suggesting a neurotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the effect of acute exposure to glyphosate (GPH) on the blood-brain barrier in vitro based on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and compared to two chemical analogs: aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and glycine (GLY), for

The short-term effects of the herbicide glyphosate (1.25-10 mM) on the growth, nitrogen fixation, carbohydrate metabolism, and shikimate pathway were investigated in leaves and nodules of nodulated lupine plants. All glyphosate treatments decreased nitrogenase activity rapidly (24 h) after application, even at the lowest and sublethal dose used (1.25 mM). This early effect on nitrogenase could not be related to either damage to nitrogenase components (I and II) or limitation of carbohydrates supplied by the host plant. In fact, further exposure to increasing glyphosate concentrations (5 mM) an

The non-peer-reviewed biomonitoring report published online by Moms Across America (MAA; Honeycutt and Rowlands, 2014) does not support the conclusion that glyphosate concentrations detected in a limited number of urine samples from women, men and children, or breast milk from nursing mothers, pose a health risk to the public, including nursing children. Systemically absorbed doses of glyphosate estimated from the MAA urine biomonitoring data and from other published biomonitoring studies indicate that daily glyphosate doses are substantially below health protective reference standards (ADIs;

Glyphosate is a widely used herbicide, yet its effects on the enteric nervous system (ENS) remain poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of low-dose glyphosate exposure on substance P (SP)-immunoreactive neurons and tachykinin receptor gene expression in the porcine small intestine. Fifteen juvenile pigs were assigned to three groups (n = 5 per group): a control group and two groups receiving oral glyphosate for 28 days at doses corresponding to the estimated maximum daily intake in Europe (0.05 mg/kg BW/day) and the acceptable daily intake (0.5 mg/kg BW/day). Glyphosate resistance in weeds is often mediated by target-site changes in 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), but non-target-site resistance (NTSR) mechanisms are increasingly recognized as important contributors to field-evolved resistance. Here, we characterized a glyphosate-resistant Eleusine indica population collected from cotton fields in Xinjiang, China. Whole-plant dose-response analysis showed that the resistant population GR-R had a 3.36-fold higher GR50 than the susceptible population GR-S. GR-R also accumulated substantially less shikimic acid after glyphosate tre

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia in Western countries, typically diagnosed in older adults, with a median age of 72. Despite its prevalence, the etiology is unclear, and cases at younger ages have been increasingly reported. We present a case of a male diagnosed in his mid-sixties with CLL to underscore the need for further investigation into the poorly understood etiology and management of CLL. The patient presented to his primary care provider for an annual examination, where an elevated white blood cell (WBC) count was first detected. Over the following t

The extensive use of glyphosate (Glyp) in agriculture has led to persistent residues in food and the environment, which pose potential threats to ecosystems and human health. Thus, rapid, sensitive, and selective on-site detection strategies are urgently needed. Herein, we developed a smartphone-assisted paper sensor based on a dual-site nanozyme with atomically dispersed Zr-Cu centers anchored on a metal-organic framework (MOF). Compared with the monometallic Cu MOF, the obtained Zr-Cu MOF exhibits an 11.32-fold increase in peroxidase-like activity. In this system, the redox-active Cu site fu

BACKGROUND: Herbicides are environmental contaminants that have gained much attention due to the potential hazards they pose to human health. Glyphosate, the active ingredient in many commercial herbicides, is the most heavily applied herbicide worldwide. The recent rise in glyphosate application to corn and soy crops correlates positively with increased death rates due to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. Glyphosate has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier in in vitro models, but has yet to be verified in vivo. Additionally, reports have shown that glyphosate e
