Expanded Graphite-Modified Melamine-Formaldehyde Adhesive for Fire-Retardant Japanese Cedar Plywood: Physicomechanical and Combustion Performance.

Wood-based composite panels are renewable and low-carbon materials, but their inherent flammability limits their broader use in applications requiring improved fire safety. In this study, expanded graphite (EG) was incorporated into a melamine-formaldehyde (MF) adhesive system to fabricate fire-retardant Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plywood. Two EG types with different expansion ratios, 200-fold expanded graphite (200EG) and 450-fold expanded graphite (450EG), were added to the bonding layer at 10, 20, 30, and 40 phr. The effects of EG expansion ratio and content on the physicomechani

Fabrication of expanded graphite-embedded biopolymer-based composite membrane for chromate ion removal from aqueous solutions.

Chromate ion is considered as a potential pollutant due to its carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic effects. A newly fabricated chitosan-based composite membrane with expanded graphite shows effective and fast (within 40 min) adsorption of the chromate ion from aqueous solution. The percentage of removal of this membrane is about 91.68 ± 2%. Regeneration of the membrane is possible within 15 min, after which the removal efficiency of the membrane increases to 94.52 ± 1% and shows 89.62% removal up to seven cycles. Adsorption analyses were conducted by using UV spectroscopy. Removal of the

Label-free electrochemical biosensing of MDR-TB genes using graphite-ZnO nanofibers on glassy carbon electrodes.

The rising global burden of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) highlights the urgent need for simple, affordable, and reliable diagnostic technologies. In this work, a low-cost, label-free DNA biosensor is developed using graphite-zinc oxide (Graphite-ZnO) nanofibers fabricated by electrospinning and integrated onto glassy carbon electrodes. The biosensor is specifically designed for the detection of drug-resistance-associated genes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), with particular emphasis on the embC gene, which is linked to both active and latent TB infections. Single-stranded oli

Robotic Drop-Coating Graphite-Copper PDMS Soft Pressure Sensor with Fabric-Integrated Electrodes for Wearable Devices.

Flexible pressure sensors are essential for wearable electronics, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. However, conventional Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based sensors often suffer from limited conductivity, poor filler dispersion, and low structural integration with textile substrates. In this work, we present a robotic drop-coating approach for fabricating graphite-copper nanoparticle (G-CuNP)/PDMS composite pressure sensors with textile-integrated electrodes. By precisely controlling droplet deposition, a three-layer sandwiched structure was realized that ensures uniformity and scala

Catalytic mechanism of yavapaiite confined in interlayer space of graphite oxide in heterogeneous electro-Fenton oxidation.

Conventional iron-based catalysts are prone to aggregation and deactivation in the heterogeneous electro-Fenton (hetero-EF) process resulting in electrocatalytic activity reduction. Herein, a simple one-pot strategy using potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) as both oxidant and iron source was developed to synthesize a novel yavapaiite confined in graphite oxide (KFe(SO4)2-in-GO) nano-electrocatalyst. GO with spatial confinement effect and surface negativity could in-situ incorporate KFe(SO4)2 nanoparticles inside the interlayer space and inhibit the agglomeration. Three dimensional hetero-EF system wit

Numerical Analysis of Degradation and Capacity Loss in Graphite Active Particles of Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

It is well known that the performance and durability of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can be severely impaired by fracture events that originate in stresses due to Li ion diffusion in fast charge-discharge cycles. Existing models of battery damage overlook either the role of particle shape in stress concentration, the effect of material disorder and preexisting defects in crack initiation and propagation, or both. In this work we present a novel, three-dimensional, and coupled diffusive-mechanical numerical model that simultaneously accounts for all these phenomena by means of (i) a random part

Effect of NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts on hexavalent chromium removal in biocathode microbial fuel cells.

Two kinds of NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts were used as biocathode electrodes in hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI))-reducing microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The one was fabricated through direct modification, and the other one processed by HNO3 pretreatment of graphite felt before modification. The results showed that two NaX zeolite-modified graphite felts are excellent bio-electrode materials for MFCs, and that a large NaX loading mass, obtained by HNO3 pretreatment (the HNO3-NaX electrode), leads to a superior performance. The HNO3-NaX electrode significantly improved the electricity generatio

Immobilization of paracetamol and benzocaine pro-drug derivatives as long-range self-organized monolayers on graphite.

We show here by means of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) at the liquid/solid interface that paracetamol and benzocaine molecules bearing a long aliphatic chain can be immobilized on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) as perfectly ordered two-dimensional domains extending over several hundreds of nanometers. In both cases, high-resolution STM images reveal that compounds 1 and 2 self-assemble into parallel lamellae having a head-to-head arrangement. The paracetamol heads of 1 are in a zigzag position with entangled n-dodecyloxy side chains while benzocaine heads of compound 2 are per

Macromolecular model-based mechanistic insights into the molten salt electrolysis graphitization of woody biochar.

Molten salt electrolysis graphitization provides an efficient pathway for the green transformation of biomass waste into high-crystallinity graphitized carbon. However, the intrinsic correlation between heteroatom removal and aromatic carbon skeleton rearrangement during electrochemical graphitization remains poorly understood at the molecular scale. In this study, woody biochar (WB) was used as a precursor to achieve its graphitization via molten salt electrolysis. The carbon framework reconstruction and heteroatom structure evolution before and after electrolysis were systematically analyzed

Simultaneous Electrochemical Exfoliation of Graphite and Formation of Azide-Functionalized Graphene Flakes and Their Application in Sensing.

Electrochemical exfoliation has emerged as a facile method for graphene production. This work presents a one-step electrochemical synthesis of bulk azidated graphene by exfoliating graphite foil in a sodium sulfate/sodium azide aqueous solution. This approach circumvents the limitations associated with traditional methods that utilize graphene oxide (GO) as a precursor, which often require subsequent reduction steps that can compromise the electrical conductivity and potentially convert azide groups to amines. Here, we directly introduced azide functionalities onto the graphene surface during

Recent advances in graphitic carbon nitride-based nanocomposites for energy storage and conversion applications.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has gained significant attention as a promising nonmetallic semiconductor photocatalyst due to its photochemical stability, favorable electronic properties, and efficient light absorption. Nevertheless, its practical applications are hindered by limitations such as low specific surface area, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, poor electrical conductivity, and restricted photo-response ranges. This review explores recent advancements in the synthesis, modification and application of g-C3N4and its nanocomposites with a focus on addressing the

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Confers Bacterial Tolerance to Antibiotics in Wastewater Relating to ATP Depletion.

Graphitic carbon nitride (C3N4) is a kind of visible light-responsive photocatalyst that has been of great interest in wastewater treatment. However, its environmental impact and biological effect remains to be elucidated. This study investigated the effect of C3N4 nanosheets on bacterial abundance and antibiotic tolerance in wastewater. Interestingly, as compared to the wastewater containing the antibiotic ofloxacin alone, the wastewater containing both ofloxacin and C3N4 had much higher numbers of total living bacteria, but lower levels of the ofloxacin-resistant bacteria and the ofloxacin-r

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of Graphitic Carbon Nitride by Adjustment of Carbon Vacancy for Supersensitive Detection of MicroRNA.

Herein, a supersensitive biosensor was constructed by using graphitic carbon nitride with a carbon vacancy (VC-g-C3N4) as an efficient electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emitter for detection of microRNA-21 (miRNA-21). Impressively, VC-g-C3N4 could be prepared by formaldehyde (HCHO)-assisted urea ploycondensation, and the concentration of the carbon vacancy could be controlled by adjusting the dosage of HCHO to improve the ECL performance, in which the carbon vacancy could improve the charge carrier transfer to enhance the conductivity and it also could be used as an electron trap to prevent elect

Development of an inexpensive and rapidly preparable enzymatic pencil graphite biosensor for monitoring of glyphosate in waters.

Glyphosate (GLY) is the most widely used non-selective broad-spectrum herbicide worldwide under well-reported side effects on the environment and human health. That's why it's necessary to control its presence in the environment. This work describes the development of an affordable, simple, and accurate electrochemical biosensor using a pencil graphite electrode as support, a horseradish peroxidase enzyme immobilized on a polysulfone membrane doped with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The developed electrochemical sensor was used in the determination of GLY in river and drinking water samples.

A ratiometric nanoprobe based on carboxylated graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets and Eu3+ for the detection of tetracyclines.

A ratiometric fluorescence method based on carboxylated graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (C-g-C3N4) and Eu3+ (C-g-C3N4-Eu3+) is described for the detection of tetracyclines (TCs), a broad-spectrum antibiotic. C-g-C3N4, which was used as a fluorescence enhancer of Eu3+, was prepared by direct pyrolysis of melamine and post-functionalization. In the presence of TCs, the fluorescence intensity of Eu3+ at 616 nm increased, accompanied by a decrease of fluorescence intensity of C-g-C3N4 at 435 nm. Under the optimal conditions, the ratio of fluorescence intensity at 616 nm to the one at 435 nm (I

Role of a binary metallic modifier in the determination of cadmium in graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry.

In order to discuss the matrix modifier effect of palladium, iron, and a mixture of palladium and iron for the determination of cadmium in graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (GF-AAS), we measured the absorption profiles of a cadmium line at various compositions of these elements. Variations in the gas temperature were also estimated with the progress of atomization, by using a two-line method under the assumption of a Boltzmann distribution. The atomic absorption of cadmium appeared on the way of heating from the charring temperature to the atomizing temperature while the gas temp

Relationship between retention characteristics and physicochemical parameters of solutes on porous graphitized carbon column.

The retention of 44 barbituric acid derivatives was determined on porous graphitized carbon (PGC) column using dioxane water mixtures as eluents. Linear correlations were calculated between the logarithm of the capacity factor and the dioxane concentration in the eluent. Free Wilson analysis combined with stepwise regression analysis was used to elucidate the role of individual substituents in the retention behaviour. Calculations indicated that the apolar substituents lie parallel to the surface of PGC surface increasing in this manner the retention and--as opposed to the retention characteri
