Combined and separate effects of future climate change and elevated atmospheric CO2 on maize growth and water consumption in the US Corn Belt.

BACKGROUND: The joint effects of climate change and rising atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) can alter maize phenology, yield, and water use, but the extent to which elevated [CO2] offsets climate-related impacts on C4 maize remains uncertain. This study quantified the combined and separate effects of future climate change and elevated [CO2] on irrigated maize growth and water consumption in the Southwestern Plain of the Great Lakes (SPG) - a region of the US Corn Belt. A validated Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator (APSIM) model was driven by three bias-corrected global climate mod

Spatiotemporal patterns of excess mortality from non-COVID causes of death in the United States, March to December 2020.

To estimate the burden of excess mortality from 17 underlying causes of death between March and December 2020 in the United States and to compare trends in excess deaths from non-COVID causes vs from COVID-19. Using time-series models, we estimated monthly counts of all-cause and cause-specific excess deaths. We stratified by geographic region and compared temporal trends in excess deaths from non-COVID causes to trends in deaths attributed to COVID-19. Of approximately 500 000 excess deaths, 70% were attributed to COVID-19. We observed increases in several underlying causes of death, ranging

Influence of perfluoroalkyl acids and other parameters on circulating thyroid hormones and immune-related microRNA expression in free-ranging nestling peregrine falcons.

Exposure to certain perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) can have considerable effects on the endocrine and immune systems, although such effects remain largely uncharacterized in wildlife. Using an apex avian predator, we investigated possible relationships of thyroid hormones (THs), specifically free (F) and total (T) thyroxine (FT4; TT4) and triiodothyronine (FT3; TT3), and the expression of an immune-related microRNA biomarker (i.e., miR-155), with the concentrations of 11 PFAAs in nestling peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus). Nestling peregrines (n = 56; usually two chicks of each sex per nest)

MercNet: a national monitoring network to assess responses to changing mercury emissions in the United States.

A partnership of federal and state agencies, tribes, industry, and scientists from academic research and environmental organizations is establishing a national, policy-relevant mercury monitoring network, called MercNet, to address key questions concerning changes in anthropogenic mercury emissions and deposition, associated linkages to ecosystem effects, and recovery from mercury contamination. This network would quantify mercury in the atmosphere, land, water, and biota in terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal ecosystems to provide a national scientific capability for evaluating the benefits

Patterns and drivers of sedimentary carbon in global aquatic ecosystems during the Anthropocene.

Aquatic ecosystems serve as critical carbon sinks, with sediments playing a key role in long-term organic carbon sequestration. However, the global patterns and trajectories of sedimentary total organic carbon concentration (TOC) and organic carbon burial rates (OC-BR) during the Anthropocene remain poorly constrained. Here, we present a comprehensive global synthesis of sediment core records from lakes, reservoirs, inland wetlands, and coastal systems, integrating over 18,000 rows data from 585 sites across diverse climatic and geographic settings. Generally, our results show that both TOC an

Using the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model to estimate public health impacts of PM2.5 from individual power plants.

We estimated PM2.5-related public health impacts/ton emitted of primary PM2.5, SO2, and NOx for a set of power plants in the Mid-Atlantic and Lower Great Lakes regions of the United States, selected to include varying emission profiles and broad geographic representation. We then developed a regression model explaining variability in impacts per ton emitted using the population distributions around each plant. We linked outputs from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model v 4.7.1 with census data and concentration-response functions for PM2.5-related mortality, and monetized health e

Assessing COVID-19 risk with temporal indices and geographically weighted ordinal logistic regression in US counties.

PURPOSE: Research on the novel coronavirus diseases 2019 (COVID-19) mainly relies on cross-sectional data, but this approach fails to consider the temporal dimension of the pandemic. This study assesses three temporal dimensions of the COVID-19 infection risk in US counties, namely probability of occurrence, duration of the pandemic, and intensity of transmission, and investigate local patterns of the factors associated with these risks. METHODS: Analyzing daily data between January 22 and September 11, 2020, we categorize the contiguous US counties into four risk groups-High-Risk, Moderate-R

Patterns and processes of pathogen exposure in gray wolves across North America.

The presence of many pathogens varies in a predictable manner with latitude, with infections decreasing from the equator towards the poles. We investigated the geographic trends of pathogens infecting a widely distributed carnivore: the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Specifically, we investigated which variables best explain and predict geographic trends in seroprevalence across North American wolf populations and the implications of the underlying mechanisms. We compiled a large serological dataset of nearly 2000 wolves from 17 study areas, spanning 80° longitude and 50° latitude. Generalized linea

Trajectories of post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and risk-protective factors in recently resettled refugees in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Refugees face elevated risks of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to exposure to acute and chronic potentially traumatic events (PTEs) pre-, during, and post-migration. Early resettlement is a period of profound transition, marked by reduced acute trauma exposures but heightened chronic and daily stressors. Despite this, limited longitudinal research has examined PTSD symptom trajectories during the initial years of resettlement. PURPOSE: This study aimed to: (1) identify PTSD symptom trajectory subgroups using latent class trajectory modeling (LCTM), and (2) examine socio

Health assessment of non-native red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) and their impact potential on native species.

Red-eared sliders (RES; Trachemys scripta elegans) are a globally invasive species that can impact native chelonian populations through resource competition and disease introduction. In Cook County, Illinois, invasive RES co-occur with, and greatly outnumber, a species of conservation priority in the Great Lakes region: the Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii). This study sampled free-ranging RES in Cook County during spring, summer, and fall in four unique locations to characterize the possible effect of this non-native species on the health of regional, sympatric, aquatic chelonians. Concentrated sodium chloride brine solutions as an additional treatment for preventing the introduction of nonindigenous species in the ballast tanks of ships declaring no ballast on board.

Currently, seawater flushing is the only management strategy for reducing the number of viable organisms in residual sediments and water of ballast tanks of vessels declaring no ballast on board (NOBOB) that traffic ports of the eastern United States. Previously, we identified several species of freshwater and brackish-water peracarid crustaceans able to survive the osmotic shock that occurs during open-ocean ballast water exchange and, potentially, to disperse over long distances via ballasted ships and NOBOB vessels. We tested the efficacy of concentrated sodium chloride brine solutions as a

Widespread high-risk clones of multidrug-resistant extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli B2-ST131 and F-ST648 in public aquatic environments.

Aquatic environments are considered a reservoir for the dissemination of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, principally Escherichia coli, with the consequent spread of acquired antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). Widespread high-risk clones of MDR E. coli are responsible for human infections worldwide. This study aimed to characterise, through whole-genome sequencing (WGS), isolates of MDR E. coli harbouring ARGs obtained from public aquatic environments in Brazil. MDR E. coli isolates were obtained from rivers, streams and lakes that presented different Water Quality Index records and wer

The potential of rapid screening methods for Schistosoma mansoni in western Kenya.

Data from 46 schools in western Kenya were used to investigate the performance of school-based questionnaires, on reported blood in stool and water-contact patterns, as indicators of the prevalence of human infection with Schistosoma mansoni. Prevalence of infection was associated with the prevalence of self-reported blood in stool, recent history of swimming and recent history of fishing. It was shown that use of a threshold of 30% of subjects reporting blood in stool would identify 42.9% of the 'high-prevalence' schools (i.e. prevalence > or = 50%) and 87.5% of the 'low-prevalence' schools (

Results of testing for intestinal parasites by state diagnostic laboratories, United States, 1987.

We analyzed results of 216,275 stool specimens examined by the state diagnostic laboratories in 1987; parasites were found in 20.1%. Percentages were highest for protozoans: Giardia lamblia (7.2%), Entamoeba coli and Endolimax nana (4.2% each), Blastocystis hominis (2.6%), Entamoeba histolytica (0.9%), and Cryptosporidium species (0.2%). Identifications of Giardia lamblia increased broadly from the 4.0% average found in 1979, with 40 states reporting increases and seven decreases. Most states that identified Giardia in more than 9% of specimens were located around the Great Lakes or in the Nor

From the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases: Summary of a workshop on disease mechanisms and prospects for prevention of Reye's syndrome.

The workshop participants identified several areas that are worthy of investigation. A better understanding of the populations at risk is necessary. First, the geographic distribution of cases is poorly understood, and efforts should be made to determine whether the apparent clustering of cases in the states bordering the Great Lakes is real or reflects better reporting and identification of cases in these states than in other regions. Second, reports of cases among siblings or relatives suggests either an underlying metabolic risk factor or the possibility of a common environmental risk facto

Analysis and modeling of Blastomyces dermatitidis environmental prevalence in Minnesota using soil collected to compare basal and outbreak levels.

Outbreaks of blastomycosis, caused by the fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, occur in endemic areas of the United States and Canada but the geographic range of blastomycosis is expanding. Previous studies inferred the location of B. dermatitidis through epidemiologic data associated with outbreaks because culture of B. dermatitidis from the environment is often unsuccessful. In this study, we used a culture-independent, PCR-based method to identify B. dermatitidis DNA in environmental samples using the BAD1 promoter region. We tested 250 environmental samples collected in Minnesota, either assoc
