Interpersonal Predictors of Grief Among Caregivers of Persons With Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Family caregivers of persons with dementia experience grief as the care recipients' dementia advances. Here, we explore how various interpersonal factors hypothesized to relate to prolonged grief disorder (PGD) (e.g., perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness) and our micro-social theory of grief (e.g., relational deprivation, self-esteem-related social support) relate to caregiver dementia-related grief. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Baseline caregiver data (N = 69) from an National Institute on Aging funded randomized pilot trial evaluating a digital reminiscence plat

Complicated grief in caregivers of patients in a palliative care unit.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictive factors of complicated grief in caregivers of patients in palliative care at 2, 6, and 13 months post-death. METHODS: This longitudinal-prospective study assessed primary caregivers of palliative care patients before death (N = 129). The Complicated Grief Inventory (CGI) was administered at 2 months (N = 119), 6 months (N = 98), and 13 months (N = 94) post-death. RESULTS: Complicated grief symptoms decreased significantly across the three time points (η2 = 0.54). A strong correlation was observed between complicated grief scores at 6 and 13 months (r = 0.64)

The Grief of Mothers After the Sudden Unexpected Death of Their Infants.

UNLABELLED: : media-1vid110.1542/5741323271001PEDS-VA_2017-3651Video Abstract BACKGROUND: The loss of a child is associated with elevated grief severity, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of postneonatal mortality in the United States. The diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) has gained broader acceptance and use. Little is known about PGD in mothers after SIDS. METHODS: Between May 2013 and July 2016, we assessed 49 SIDS-bereaved mothers living in informal settlements near Cape Town, South Africa, and on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and 359 SIDS-bereave

The role of self-concept clarity in prolonged grief disorder.

Three studies using independent samples of bereaved individuals were conducted to examine the association of self-concept clarity (SCC) with symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), a debilitating syndrome than can develop after bereavement. Study 1 (N = 67) showed that lower SCC was associated with greater PGD severity, independent from self-concept content change. Using a retrospective design, Study 2 (N = 116) showed that a loss can coincide with a decline in SCC, the magnitude of which was associated with acute PGD severity. Study 2 also showed that the maintenance of PGD symptoms over

Predictors of complicated grief: a systematic review of empirical studies.

A systematic review of the literature on predictors of complicated grief (CG) was undertaken with the aim of clarifying the current knowledge and to inform future planning and work in CG following bereavement. Predictors of CG prior to the death include previous loss, exposure to trauma, a previous psychiatric history, attachment style, and the relationship to the deceased. Factors associated with the death include violent death, the quality of the caregiving or dying experience, close kinship relationship to the deceased, marital closeness and dependency, and lack of preparation for the death

The prevalence and correlates of psychiatric comorbidity in individuals with complicated grief.

BACKGROUND: Complicated grief (CG), variously called pathological or traumatic grief, is a debilitating syndrome that is not currently included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, (DSM-IV) nomenclature. One issue that remains under debate is whether this condition can be clearly distinguished from other psychiatric disorders, such as major depression and posttraumatic stress disorder, with which CG frequently coexists. METHODS: Using a structured clinical interview for CG and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, trained experienced raters con

Complicated grief and its correlates in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: While the recent loss of a loved one has been identified as a risk factor for suicide in patients with bipolar disorder, and complicated grief (CG) has been associated with elevated rates of suicidality compared with loss without CG, little is known about the frequency or impact of CG in bipolar disorder. We investigated the frequency and implications of loss of loved ones in an ongoing study of bipolar disorder. METHOD: We conducted a survey of 120 patients with well-characterized DSM-IV bipolar disorder participating in Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disord

Suicidal ideation in elderly bereaved: the role of complicated grief.

This study examined whether symptoms of complicated grief at baseline predicted suicidal ideation during a depressive episode in elderly bereaved individuals. Over a 17-month period, serial ratings of suicidal ideation, hopelessness, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and complicated grief were obtained from 130 elderly participants who had lost their spouses within the past 2 years. Groups of active and passive suicidal ideators, as well as nonideator controls, were compared via analysis of variance (ANOVA) with respect to levels of complicated grief, depression, and anxiety. Validation of the Pandemic Grief Risk Factors and Its Relationship With Work-Related Stress and Grief Reaction Among Healthcare Workers Who Witnessed Patient Deaths.

BACKGROUND: The Pandemic Grief Risk Factors (PGRFs) was developed as a self-report tool to compile a comprehensive list of unique risk factors related to grief when experiencing a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) loss. We explored the reliability and validity of the PGRF among healthcare workers who witnessed their patients' deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, we examined whether the general severity of PGRF may have been associated with work-related stress and pandemic grief reactions. METHODS: An online survey was conducted among tertiary hospital healthcare workers (doctors an

Grief in Neurosurgery: Reframing Loss and Identity Through Lived Experience.

Grief is an under-recognized yet pervasive experience in neurosurgery, arising not only from the death of patients and loved ones but also from losses related to professional identity, health, and personal relationships. Despite its relevance, grief is often conflated with burnout or overlooked entirely within surgical culture. When personal adversity strikes, such as loss, illness, or major life upheaval, the intensity of neurosurgical practice can amplify these challenges, influencing professional identity, performance, and overall resilience. As the field continues to evolve and diversify,

Exploring the Relationship Between Prolonged Grief and Borderline Personality Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new diagnosis that is often mistaken for other psychopathologies. We report a case of PGD in a patient who screened positive for personality disorder. Both PGD and personality disorder symptoms were much improved after a course of prolonged grief disorder therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A bereaved woman in her mid-20s sought treatment for depression 9 months after the death of her father. Her depressive symptoms responded well to antidepressant medication and a brief course of interpersonal psychotherapy. However, prolonged grief symptoms persisted

Perinatal loss: attachment, grief symptoms and women's quality of life.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Perinatal loss may cause intense distress even psychiatric issues, affecting the woman's quality of life. Attachment may provide a useful perspective in understanding the outcomes of the mourning process. Thus, the objectives of the present study were to evaluate perinatal grief symptoms and the psychological and general quality of life among 137 Italian women (mean age 36,9. ± 6,88 years old) in relation to attachment, specifically measured through parental care and control. DESIGN/METHODS: About 79.6% of the participants had miscarriages and 20.4% had stillbirths. About 45.

Job loss-related complicated grief symptoms: A cognitive-behavioral framework.

In a significant minority of people, involuntarily job loss can result in symptoms of job loss-related complicated grief (JLCG). The present cognitive-behavioral framework is introduced to explain the underlying processes that may lead to the development and maintenance of JLCG symptoms. Three core processes play a central role, namely (1) negative cognitions related to the job loss and misinterpretation of one's grief reactions; (2) anxious and depressive avoidance strategies to cope with the job loss and its consequences; and (3) insufficient integration of the job loss into the autobiograph

Public stigma towards prolonged grief disorder: Does diagnostic labeling matter?

The recent introduction of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) as a diagnostic category may cause negative social reactions (i.e. public stigma). Vignette experiments demonstrate that persons with both PGD symptoms and a PGD diagnosis elicit more public stigma than persons who experience integrated grief. However, the strength of the influence of the diagnosis itself remains unclear: We aimed to clarify if the diagnostic label PGD produces additional public stigma beyond PGD symptoms. We further compared whether public stigma varies between the label PGD and the label major depressive episode (MDE)

Prolonged grief disorder: clinical utility of ICD-11 diagnostic guidelines.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Disease (ICD-11) is expected to include a new diagnosis for prolonged grief disorder (ICD-11PGD). This study examines the validity and clinical utility of the ICD-11PGD guideline by testing its performance in a well-characterized clinical sample and contrasting it with a very different criteria set with the same name (PGDPLOS). METHODS: We examined data from 261 treatment-seeking participants in the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)-sponsored multicenter clinical trial to determine the rates of diagnosis

Lessons From Reparative Therapy Applied to Post-Abortion Grief Counseling.

There is evidence from the legislative, judicial, and counseling sectors that the sun is setting on therapies designed to change sexual orientation. Despite this evidence, there is also evidence that similar pseudoscientific interventions continue to be used in at least one other area-post-abortion counseling. The key factor shared by both interventions is their dependence on unvalidated explanations of behavior. In the case of changing the expression of sexual orientation, the harm at the personal and communal levels is clear. In the case of post-abortion counseling, the harm is hypothesized,

Complicated grief symptoms in anxiety disorders: prevalence and associated impairment.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has identified high rates of comorbid anxiety disorders among individuals presenting with primary CG. In the present study, we examined the prevalence of comorbid CG in bereaved primary anxiety disorder (AD) patients compared to bereaved healthy controls. We also examined the impairment associated with comorbid CG in AD. METHODS: Participants were 242 bereaved adults (mean (SD) age = 41.5 (13.1), 44.2% women) with a primary AD diagnosis, including generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; n = 57), panic disorder (PD; n = 49), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; n = 29)
