The effect of vitamin A-fortified coconut cooking oil on the serum retinol concentration of Filipino children 4-7 years old.

A 6-month intervention trial was conducted among 542 Filipino children aged 4 to 7 years to determine the effect of vitamin A-fortified coconut cooking oil intake on their vitamin A status and to identify factors that influence this. Children were randomly assigned to the Experimental group, with vitamin A-fortified cooking oil ration; to Control-1 group with unfortified cooking oil ration; and to Control-2 group without cooking oil ration. In all groups, children's serum retinol concentration improved. Relative change in serum retinol concentration was significantly higher among the Experimen

Impact of a social marketing campaign promoting dark-green leafy vegetables and eggs in central Java, Indonesia.

In order to work towards further reduction of vitamin A deficiency in central Java, Indonesia, a social marketing campaign promoting eggs and dark-green leafy vegetables was initiated in March 1996. The nutritional surveillance system (December 1995-December 1996) found the following. The campaign's messages were well noticed. Consumption of at least one egg in the past week increased from 80% to 92% in mothers and from 78% to 92% in children 12-36 months old. It increased in all socio-economic groups and was independent of ownership of chickens. Most eggs had been purchased. The quantity of v

Socio-economic patterning of expenditures on 'out-of-home' food and non-alcoholic beverages by product and place of purchase in Britain.

While most food is consumed at home, food eaten out-of-home plays an important role in diets and it has been associated with higher energy intake and higher body weight. Beyond prepared meals, there is limited understanding of what foods people buy out-of-home and where they buy them from. This study analyses out-of-home food purchases by food groups and food outlet types, and estimates socio-economic differences in these expenditure patterns. We used a nationally representative product-level dataset of expenditures (n=2,734,987) on foods and non-alcoholic beverages for out-of-home consumption

Worldwide variations in purchase and per-procedure costs of single-use flexible ureteroscopes and flexible navigable access sheaths: the economic impact of reuse strategies on procedural outcomes from a 40-country YAU-EAU endourology international collaboration.

Endourological practice increasingly relies on single-use devices, the costs of which vary considerably across regions and healthcare systems. Flexible single-use ureteroscopes (FURS) and flexible and navigable suction ureteral access sheaths (FANS) represent a substantial proportion of ureteroscopy-related expenditure. To mitigate these costs, some centres have adopted reuse strategies aimed at reducing per-procedure expenses. The aim of this study was to evaluate international variation in the purchase prices and real-world per-procedure costs of FURS and FANS, and to assess the economic imp

Promoting sun safety among zoo visitors.

BACKGROUND: Each year, millions of children visit zoological parks, where they are exposed to long bouts of ultraviolet radiation (UVR). We conducted a study in the winter and replicated it in the summer to evaluate an intervention for reducing UVR exposure during the zoo visit. METHODS: Each study used a nonequivalent control group design: one zoological site received the intervention and a second received evaluation only. Key outcome measures consisted of observed prevalence of hat use by exiting children (N = 8,721 and 8,524, respectively, in winter and summer studies) and purchase rates o

SMS messages increase adherence to rapid diagnostic test results among malaria patients: results from a pilot study in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization now recommends parasitological confirmation for malaria case management. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for malaria are an accurate and simple diagnostic to confirm parasite presence in blood. However, where they have been deployed, adherence to RDT results has been poor, especially when the test result is negative. Few studies have examined adherence to RDTs distributed or purchased through the private sector. METHODS: The Rapid Examination of Malaria and Evaluation of Diagnostic Information (REMEDI) study assessed the acceptability of and adherence t

Relapsing childhood steroid sensitive nephrotic syndrome: what determines eventual remission?

BACKGROUND: Childhood idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) responds to corticosteroids (CS), but tends to relapse, often requiring steroid sparing agents (SSA). Long standing treatment free remission (LTFR) evolves in most cases, but whether this is related to puberty or disease length is unknown. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the computerized database of Israel's largest health maintenance organization. Children with a new INS diagnosis between 2000-2010 were divided into 2 groups according to INS presentation age. Disease length was determined based on CS or SSA use. Children with dis

Prevalence and radiographic features of cyst-like lesions in German Warmblood horses presented for pre-purchase examination.

INTRODUCTION: Cyst-like lesions (CLLs) are frequently detected during radiographic examinations of equine limbs. They may represent a potential risk factor during pre-purchase examination (PPE) and are of considerable clinical and economic importance, as they may lead to negative purchase decisions. While affected horses may develop lameness, incidental findings have also been reported. The goal of the study was to describe the prevalence, location and radiographic characteristics of CLLs in a group of sound German Warmblood horses. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 3863

Percentage of income spent on tobacco and intention to quit: a cross-sectional analysis of the JASTIS 2020 study.

BACKGROUND: Existing indicators for the ease of purchasing tobacco did not reflect the actual amount smoked and individual income, and did not assess heated tobacco products (HTPs). This study assessed the percentage of income spent on tobacco, including combustible cigarettes and/or HTPs, at the individual level and its relation to quit intention. METHODS: An internet-based self-reported questionnaire survey was conducted in 2020 as a part of the Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey. A total of 954 smokers aged 15-72 years were analyzed. We calculated the percentage of income spent

Consumer assessment of safety and date labeling statements on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products designed to minimize risk of listeriosis.

Point-of-purchase safety-based labeling guidance on the proper storage and handling of refrigerated ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products could help reduce the risk of listeriosis. Seniors and pregnant women are two population groups at increased risk of listeriosis due to suppressed or compromised immune systems. We conducted 11 focus groups with senior-aged women and women of childbearing age in Colorado and Ohio to assess consumer awareness of Listeria, storage practices of RTE meat products, perceptions regarding the acceptability and usefulness of common date and potential food saf

Diagnostic validity of alcohol demand and monetary delay discounting in relation to alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: A reinforcer pathology approach to alcohol use disorder (AUD) proposes that high alcohol reinforcing value (high alcohol demand) and overvaluation of immediate rewards (high discounting of future rewards) are critical determinants of problematic drinking. Applied to clinical settings, these indicators have not been examined as potential assessments for use in clinical practice. Toward that end, the current study examined whether reinforcer pathology indicators accurately classify individuals with AUD from recreational drinkers without AUD at levels that would meet clinical accuracy

Patient acceptability of and readiness-to-pay for pharmacy-based health membership plans to improve hypertension outcomes in Lima, Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacies have been used to improve population health in Peru and other countries globally, operating as a non-traditional health access point. A pharmacy-based model holds potential to improve patient management of hypertension, a leading risk factor for non-communicable diseases in low- and middle-income countries. The aim of this study was to evaluate patient acceptability of hypertension services and health membership plans, if offered through private pharmacies in the future. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 347 hypertensive individuals who purchased ant

Behavioral economic demand in opioid treatment: Predictive validity of hypothetical purchase tasks for heroin, cocaine, and benzodiazepines.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral economics provides a framework in which to understand choice and motivation in the field of substance use disorders. Hypothetical purchase tasks (HPT), which indicate the amount or probability of purchasing substances at different prices, have been suggested as a clinical tool that can help predict future substance use and identify targets for intervention. METHODS: Hypothetical demand for heroin, cocaine, and benzodiazepines was assessed at baseline and after six-months in 52 opioid-agonist treatment patients. The results were analyzed using a novel exponential demand

Association of anabolic androgenic steroid use with perimortem polypharmacy, antemortem prescription drug use, and utilization of health care services - A Finnish triple register study of forensic autopsy cases.

Anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) use has previously been associated with complex polysubstance use that may increase morbidity and mortality among these individuals. In this study we aimed to further describe the features of perimortem polysubstance use, antemortem central nervous system (CNS) drug use and health care service utilization of AAS using males that suffer premature death. The main sample included all cases that were screened for AAS in connection with forensic autopsy between 2016-2019 and tested positive (n = 16). The control samples included autopsy cases that were screened for
