The Development of Standardized National Head Circumference Growth Charts for Jordanian Children Aged 0-5 Years: A Longitudinal and Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Head circumference (HC) is a key indicator of growth and brain development in children, used to identify abnormalities like microcephaly and macrocephaly. While WHO growth standards are widely adopted, they may not account for regional variations due to genetic, environmental, and socio-economic factors. This study aimed to develop and validate national HC growth charts for Jordanian children aged 0-5 years and compare them with WHO standards. Method: This study analyzed 628,456 HC measurements from 250,276 Jordanian children (51.6% boys, 48.4% girls) aged 0-1800 days, using data f

Identification of small for gestational age by population-based and customized growth charts in newborns of obese and normal-weight primiparous women.

OBJECTIVE: Our hypothesis was that newborns of obese mothers would be more likely to be classified as small for gestational age (SGA) by their customized growth curves than by the standard growth curves when compared to newborns of normal-weight mothers. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort of primiparous patients delivering between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2012. Normal-weight was defined as BMI ≤25 kg/m(2) and obese as BMI ≥ 30 kg/m(2). Infant birth-weight was characterized as SGA or non-SGA from the Lubchenco curve, the Fenton Preterm Growth Chart, and the customized growth curve. RESULT

The new "breast from birth" growth charts. An updated version of the paper given at the Primary Care Conference and Exhibition, May 2003.

The Child Growth Foundation has published the first weight reference charts specifically designed for the breast-fed infant. Based on a sample of 120 long-term British breast-fed babies, the charts demonstrate the particular growth pattern of breast-fed babies. This differs from formula-fed infants in that breast-fed babies initially gain weight more rapidly, but from two to three months of age their weight gain decreases and they begin to move downwards across centiles. At present breast-fed babies are measured against the standard British 1990 weight reference chart rather than one that refl

Customized growth charts for twin vs singleton pregnancies and their ability to identify small for gestational age-associated risk of adverse perinatal outcome.

BACKGROUND: Twin fetuses are born earlier and have slower growth than singletons. It is uncertain as to what degree this is pathological or a physiological adaptation. OBJECTIVE: We set out to develop a customized chart for twin pregnancy and compare it with the corresponding singleton chart in its ability to assess risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: The cohort consisted of 8457 twin pregnancies (16,914 fetuses) without information on chorionicity, recorded during routine care in 127 UK hospitals. We performed a mixed-effects linear regression analysis to calculate customized

Customized vs population-based growth charts to identify neonates at risk of adverse outcome: systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis of observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of customized vs population-based growth charts for the prediction of adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: MEDLINE, ClinicalTrials.gov and The Cochrane Library were searched up to 31 May 2016 to identify interventional and observational studies comparing adverse outcomes among large- (LGA) and small- (SGA) for-gestational-age neonates, when classified according to customized vs population-based growth charts. Perinatal mortality and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of both SGA and LGA neonates, intrauterine fetal demise (IUFD) and ne

Introduction of a customised growth chart protocol increased detection of small for gestational age pregnancies in a tertiary Melbourne hospital.

BACKGROUND: Growth charts customised for maternal height, weight, ethnicity and parity have been proposed as more effective at detecting infants who are small for gestational age (SGA) than routine screening with symphysio-fundal height measurement alone. Our non-randomised, prospective cohort study assessed antenatal SGA detection rates in a general maternity cohort following the introduction of the Perinatal Institute's Growth Assessment Protocol (GAP) program (consisting of customised growth chart software for plotting symphysio-fundal height, staff training and serial auditing). METHODS:

A cross-sectional growth reference and chart of stretched penile length for Japanese boys aged 0-7 years.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Reference values for penile length have not been established for Japanese boys. We aimed to develop percentiles and means (and standard deviations) of stretched penile length (SPL) in Japanese boys. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 1,628 Japanese boys aged <9 years from 2007 through 2014. The LMS method was used to develop a growth reference and chart for SPL in boys aged 0-7 years. Interobserver variation in SPLs was assessed in 32 boys (aged 0-11 years, median 3 years) using the Bland-Altman plot. The correlation between SPL and stature, weight or body mass

The impact of home-installed growth charts and small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) on child growth in Zambia: a four-arm parallel open-label cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stunting remains common in many low-income settings and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as impaired child development. METHODS: The main objective of the study was to assess whether home-installed growth charts as well as small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (SQ-LNS) can reduce growth faltering among infants. All caregivers of infants between 2 and 10 months of age at baseline, and at least 6 months old at the beginning of the interventions, in 282 randomly selected enumeration areas in Choma, Mansa and Lusaka districts in Zambia

The best tool for the assessment of developmental disorders in children with down syndrome: comparison of standard and specialized growth charts - cross sectional study.

Down Syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal abnormality associated with a spectrum of cognitive and physical disabilities. Children with DS are exposed to both lower and excess body weight and follow distinct growth-curve patterns that deviate significantly from those of children without chromosomal defects. Anthropometric parameters are assessed in the pediatric population with the use of growth charts. The study is based on data from 411 children and adults with DS from Poland. Detailed information concerning children and online survey results were also analyzed. Centiles and standard deviation scor

Ultrasonographic fetal growth charts: an informatic approach by quantitative analysis of the impact of ethnicity on diagnoses based on a preliminary report on Salentinian population.

Clear guidance on fetal growth assessment is important because of the strong links between growth restriction or macrosomia and adverse perinatal outcome in order to reduce associated morbidity and mortality. Fetal growth curves are extensively adopted to track fetal sizes from the early phases of pregnancy up to delivery. In the literature, a large variety of reference charts are reported but they are mostly up to five decades old. Furthermore, they do not address several variables and factors (e.g., ethnicity, foods, lifestyle, smoke, and physiological and pathological variables), which are

Nutritional and morbidity-mortality risk in children with cerebral palsy: Harmonisation of centers for disease control and prevention and cerebral palsy weight-for-age growth charts.

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) frequently experience growth impairment. Weight-for-age is commonly assessed using growth charts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whereas CP Growth Charts define weight thresholds associated with increased morbidity-mortality risk. This study aimed to compare and harmonise weight-for-age cutoff points from the CP Growth Charts and CDC growth charts and to examine the alignment of U.S. CP morbidity-mortality risk thresholds within the CDC weight-for-age z-score framework in a rehabilitation-centre-based cohort of Argentine children wit

TRISOMY 21: development of syndrome-specific growth charts from a wide Italian cohort and validation of BMI as a predictor of increased risk of metabolic derangement.

PURPOSE: The growth charts for individuals with Down syndrome (DS) available to-date were developed from a cohort of patients from the USA. As diet and environmental factors play a key role on auxological attainment, the growth of patients from the Mediterranean area should be assessed by means of dedicated centiles. Accordingly, we aimed to develop growth charts from a wide Italian population and to provide a metabolic validation for the BMI distribution outlined. METHODS: Retrospective, bicentric study. We gathered auxological and biochemical data from two cohorts of Italian children and ad
