Nxwisen, ntzarrin or ntzo'lin? Mapping children's respiratory symptoms among indigenous populations in Guatemala.

Estimating the prevalence of asthma is an epidemiologic challenge, particularly in rural areas of lesser-developed countries characterized by low literacy and poor access to health care. To avoid under or over reporting of symptoms, questionnaires must use terminology familiar to participants and that accurately describes the triad of cough, wheeze and breathlessness characteristic of asthma. In preparation for a large longitudinal cohort study entitled Chronic Respiratory Effects of Early Childhood Exposure to Respirable Particulate Matter (CRECER) that will examine the effects of variable ea

Knowledge, attitudes and practices during a community-level ivermectin distribution campaign in Guatemala.

Community acceptance and participation are essential for the success of mass ivermectin chemotherapy programmes for onchocerciasis (river blindness). To explore the local understanding of the purpose of ivermectin and willingness to continue taking the drug, we performed questionnaire surveys in four communities with hyperendemic onchocerciasis after each of three ivermectin treatment rounds. More than 100 respondents participated in each KAP survey, representing the heads of 30% of the households in each community. The respondents rarely stated that the goal of the ivermectin treatment progra

Health seeking behaviour and self-treatment for common childhood symptoms in rural Guatemala.

This study was conducted in the Guatemalan highland department of Sacatepequez, in a sample of 146 rural women insured by the Social Security system. It examined their health care behaviour when their children presented common childhood symptoms such as diarrhoea, fever, cough and worms. The mothers generally sought help and treatment advice from an older woman in the family, and did so more often for diarrhoea (82%) and fever (64%) than for cough (43%) or worms (28%). Obtaining advice in a pharmacy or from a drug seller ranked second (range: 8%-38%, depending on the symptom), before the procu

[How I do it: neural tube defects in guatemala - myelomeningocele spina bifida unit].

In Guatemala about 786 children are born each year with Neural Tube Defects. At our unit we operate 65 to 70 children with myelomeningocele. We have a multidisciplinary team. We recommend delivery through cesarean section. Preoperative infection is our major problem. Delayed referral is common. Dissection of placode is standard. Suture the edges of placode to resemble shape of normal cord. We perform corpectomy in cases of severe kyphosis. Hydrocephalus: We shunt 80% of the patients. Chiari II: We operate based on symptoms, first we make sure that the shunt is working, then cervical decompress

Chromosomes of Onchocerca volvulus (Spirurida: Onchocercidae): a comparative study between Nigeria and Guatemala.

Chromosomes of Nigerian Onchocerca volvulus were compared with those of Guatemalan O. volvulus. Both parasites had basically the same chromosomal construct (2n = 8, XY type). Autosomes consisted of a pair of large and two smaller pairs. Sex chromosomes were made up of medium sized X chromosome and very small Y chromosome. It was not possible to infer the position of the centromeres.

Eumycetoma Caused by Acremonium Species in a Farmer From Western Guatemala: A Case Report.

Eumycetoma is a chronic subcutaneous infection caused by filamentous fungi and is clinically characterized by swelling, nodules, sinus tracts, and grain discharge. Acremonium species are rare opportunistic fungal pathogens implicated in eumycetoma, with few reports in the dermatologic literature. This report describes a 64-year-old male farmer from rural western Guatemala with a 14-year history of chronic dermatosis localized to the right foot. Clinical examination identified nodular lesions, crusting, and edema, consistent with mycetoma. Diagnosis was confirmed through mycological studies and

Stigma in Pediatric Cancer: An Exploratory Study of Osteosarcoma and Retinoblastoma in Guatemala, Jordan, and Zimbabwe.

PURPOSE: Stigma is an understudied barrier to health care acceptance in pediatric oncology. We sought to explore the stigma experience, including its impact on cancer treatment decision making, and identify strategies to mitigate stigma for patients with osteosarcoma and retinoblastoma in Guatemala, Jordan, and Zimbabwe. METHODS: Participants included caregivers, adolescent patients (age 12-19 years), and health care clinicians. A semistructured interview guide based on The Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework (HSDF) was adapted for use at each site. Interviews were conducted in English

A novel Babesia sp. of the "Western Babesia group", detected in opossums from Guatemala.

Babesia spp. are tick-borne protozoans that involve birds and mammals in their transmission cycles and cause babesiosis, a severe hemolytic malaria-like disease. Opossums of the genus Didelphis are recognized hosts of tick-borne pathogens. Therefore, exploring tick-borne agents in Didelphis species is important to understand the circulation of pathogens in areas where opossums occur. In this study, we targeted Anaplasmataceae, Babesia, Borrelia and Hepatozoon DNA in ticks, blood and organ samples collected from three hunted Didelphis marsupialis specimens in eastern Guatemala. While the sample

Low-cost HPV testing and the prevalence of cervical infection in asymptomatic populations in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: A low cost and accurate method for detecting high-risk (HR) human papillomavirus (HPV) is important to permit HPV testing for cervical cancer prevention. We used a commercially available HPV method (H13, Hybribio) which was documented to function accurately in a reduced volume of cervical specimen to determine the most prevalent HPV types and the distribution of HPV infections in over 1795 cancer-free women in Guatemala undergoing primary screening for cervical cancer by cytology. METHODS: HR-HPV detection was attempted in cervical samples from 1795 cancer-free women receiving Pap

Institutional Delivery and Satisfaction among Indigenous and Poor Women in Guatemala, Mexico, and Panama.

Indigenous women in Mesoamerica experience disproportionately high maternal mortality rates and are less likely to have institutional deliveries. Identifying correlates of institutional delivery, and satisfaction with institutional deliveries, may help improve facility utilization and health outcomes in this population. We used baseline surveys from the Salud Mesoamérica Initiative to analyze data from 10,895 indigenous and non-indigenous women in Guatemala and Mexico (Chiapas State) and indigenous women in Panama. We created multivariable Poisson regression models for indigenous (Guatemala, M

Use of rapid needs assessment as a tool to identify vaccination delays in Guatemala and Peru.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the use of rapid needs assessment (RNA) surveys to determine the prevalence and factors contributing to delays in vaccination of children in two low middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: Data from two RNA surveys performed as part of program improvement evaluations in Guatemala and Peru were used for this analysis. The primary endpoint was the timeliness of immunization with delay defined as administration of vaccines beyond 28 days from recommended age for DTwP-HepB-Hib (Penta) and measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccines, as well as past age-restrictions for rotavirus v

5) Review of the Biology and Ecology of Adult Blackflies in Relation to the Transmission of Onchocerciasis in Guatemala.

Recent studies on the biology and ecology of adult blackflies in relation to the transmission of human onchocerciasis in Guatemala are reviewed. First, earlier studies on the transmission of the disease since its discovery by Dr. R. Robles in 1915 are outlined. Second, eleven blackfly species caught on humans are evaluated for vector status on the basis of their natural and experimental infections with third-stage larvae of Onchocerca volvulus, and Simulium ochraceum,* S. metallicum* and S. callidum are confirmed as natural vectors of the disease in Guatemala in descending order of importance,

Classification of non-Hodgkin lymphomas in Guatemala according to the World Health Organization system.

The aim of this study is to report the relative frequencies of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) subtypes in Guatemala. A panel of five hematopathologists reviewed 226 consecutive biopsies and classified them according to the 2001 World Health Organization (WHO) classification. The 83 cases of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) were further subclassified into germinal center B-cell-like (GCB) and non-GCB subtypes. Of the 226 cases, 194 (86%) were confirmed as NHL, including 169 (87%) B-cell and 25 (13%) T- or natural killer (NK)-cell NHL. The most common subtype was DLBCL (44.3%), and the most fre
