A one day old full term twin boy presented with an abdominal left testis and a scrotal right testis both of which had a normal histological appearance. A gubernaculum with normal macroanatomy and histology was found in the left inguinal canal but no processus vaginalis could be detected. Both of his brother's testes were normally descended. It is suggested that the abdominal position of the left testis was caused by a failing gubernacular reaction due to a local hormone insensitivity.

Several techniques for castration of cryptorchid cats have been described. In this case report, the use of laparoscopy for castration of a bilateral cryptorchid cat (with testes located in the abdomen) is described. Three trocars were inserted into the abdominal cavity, the testicles were easily identified adjacent to the urinary bladder. Homozygous mice mutated by homologous recombination for the AbdB-related Hoxa-10 gene are viable but display homeotic transformations of vertebrae and lumbar spinal nerves. Mutant males exhibit unilateral or bilateral criptorchidism due to developmental abnormalities of the gubernaculum, resulting in abnormal spermatogenesis and sterility. These results reveal an important role of Hoxa-10 in patterning posterior body regions and suggest that Hox genes are involved in specifying regional identity of both segmented and nonovertly segmented structures of the developing body.

A new ascarid of elasmobranchs, Terranova amoyensis sp. n., is described from the intestine of the red stringray, Dasyatis akajei (Müller and Henle), from Taiwan Strait. PURPOSE: Various factors are involved in testicular descent, and no single factor is elucidated as the cause of cryptorchidism. We prospectively observed the locations of gubernacular attachments in the cryptorchid testis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Testicular ectopia is rare, but the large range of anatomical locations described in the literature has spawned an abundance of possible theories to explain etiology. However, as the anatomical characteristics of normal testicular descent have only been elucidated recently, many of the theories of testicular ectopia do not incorporate this new perspective. In this study we aimed to determine what was in the literature about ectopic testis since 1980, and then try to explain the different anatomical variants in the light of current knowledge about testicular descent.

The gliding testis is located below the external ring; it can be manipulated to the upper scrotum but tends to ascend to its original position. Three patients were referred to our clinic with the chief complaint of emptiness of the right scrotal contents. Every physical examination in these patients revealed a little-finger-tip sized mass corresponding to the normal testis at the right side of the femoral region. Right orchiopexy by the dartos-pouch technique was successfully performed. On every surgical exploration of these patients, the gubernaculum was fixed to the femoral skin and the testis was found to be normal in size. Our cases are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th cases of femoral testis, reported in the Japanese literature.
