Adaptation and habituation of motion-induced vomiting in squirrel monkeys.

Nonrestrained adult squirrel monkeys were found to be prolific vomiters when rotated in the horizontal plane for at least 1 h with visual cues available. When multiple daily spins were given, monkeys who vomited early during the first session tended to habituate during subsequent rotations. Subjects who vomited late during the first spin tended to vomit increasingly earlier for several days before the trend reverted to habituation. When a single rotation was continued for up to 8 h, emetic waves occurred with a high probability density for about 2 h, then ceased for many hours with an occasion

Jaundice and behavioral organization in the full-term neonate.

Hyperbilirubinemia is the most common problem experienced by full-term neonates during the first days of life. The short-term behavioral sequelae in infants with mild hyperbilirubinemia not requiring phototherapy were investigated by means of the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. The behavioral integrity of 76 mildly jaundiced infants (maximum serum bilirubin 200-250 mumol/l) was compared with that of 401 control infants without clinical signs of hyperbilirubinemia (maximum serum bilirubin less than 100 mumol/l). The two groups differed on 12 of the 28 scale items reflecting five

Orienting and freezing responses in incubating ptarmigan hens.

Behavior studies and telemetric recordings of heart and respiration rates were performed on five wild and two captive, incubating, willow ptarmigan hens (Lagopus lagopus lagopus) and on four wild, incubating, Svalbard ptarmigan hens (Lagopus mutus hyperboreus). Sounds and sight of approaching humans, egg predators, or dogs near the nests elicited behavior in the hens which we have interpreted as an orienting response (OR) followed by freezing behavior. During both types of behavioral responses, heart rate was reduced from 204 +/- 39 (mean +/- SE) to 119 +/- 26 beats per minute and respiration

Neurons with complex visual properties in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Single neurons were recorded from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus of immobilized monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca irus). Two main functional types of neurons were found. The neurons of the first type (Type I neurons) responded well to simple stationary and moving stimuli such as spots, bars or slits of light. The latency of their response was 41 +/- 6 ms. They were not directionally selective and responded to a large range of velocities. The neurons of the second type (Type II neurons) responded very poorly to simple visual stimuli and their activation required real objects

Blood pressure responses of defensive hostile women when facing a real stress task.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the importance of the combination of the hostility and defensiveness variables as psychosocial factors that predict the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction. We examined the impact of a stressful situation on blood pressure responses, using a continuous psychophysiological assessment approach. DESIGN: We measured the evolution of these responses over three experimental phases (adaptation, task and recovery), also considering a minute-by-minute analysis within each phase. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We used the Cook-Medley Hostility Scale and the Social Desirabilit

The impact of multiple traumatic events on habituation during exposure therapy in active-duty military and combat veterans.

Exposure therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is efficacious for treating patients with multiple traumatic events. However, individuals with PTSD with exposure to multiple traumatic events are theorized to experience differences in emotional reactivity and fear extinction processes compared to those exposed to a single traumatic event. Thus, there is concern that individuals exposed to multiple traumatic events respond to exposure therapy differently than individuals reporting a single traumatic event. This study examined the impact of trauma frequency on exposure therapy processes

Unveiling the brain's spatio-temporal processing of salt habituation using high-density EEG.

Better understanding the multifactorial facets of salt perception over the course of a meal is crucial to set novel daily consumption strategies and formulate recommendations. We investigated whether habituation to salt (NaCl) and adaptation would occur within a controlled design, ideal to observe habituation (2 min of short pulses) and within a second more realistic design closer to bites time-frame (20 s continuous in-mouth stimulation) using High-Density Electroencephalography in healthy human adults. In the first design, a slight habituation to salt occurred as saltiness intensity decrease

History of COVID-19 infection is associated with disrupted cardiovascular stress response habituation in physically active people.

OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is characterized by multiple effects on cardiovascular and autonomic functioning. As moment-to-moment cardiovascular function is highly susceptible to mental stress, this has spurred concerns regarding the potential long-term consequences of COVID-19 on sufferers' resilience to psychological stress and stress-related cardiovascular complications. However, the long-term after-effects of COVID-19 on cardiovascular stress reactivity profiles remain relatively unexplored. To address this gap, we investigated dynamic changes in cardiovascular function

Mismatch response in preterm and asphyxic neonates: a functional electrophysiological investigation of attention and habituation.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: There is a lack of diagnostic tools for early risk stratification of cognitive outcome in infants born preterm and infants with asphyxia. Using auditory event-related potentials and mismatch response, we aimed to assess possible differences in early attention and learning, as a marker for brain maturation to subsequently improve the allocation of early neurodevelopmental support. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 22 very preterm infants (gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks), eight term infants with asphyxia and 35 healthy term infants. An auditory o

Electrodermal activity and suicide risk assessment in patients with affective disorders.

Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is a widely preferred in vivo gene therapy vector for clinical trials due to its numerous advantages. However, manufacturing recombinant AAV (rAAV) using transient transfection methods poses significant challenges. Stable cell lines present a promising alternative for large-scale, continuous production, addressing the limitations of transient transfection and enabling more efficient rAAV manufacturing. In this study, we developed an inducible stable producer cell line by integrating transfer (GFP-containing) and assembly (Cap-containing) cassettes into a previously

Scopolamine Treatment and Adaptation to Airsickness.

BACKGROUND: Airsickness is a clinical syndrome manifesting in a variety of symptoms, particularly nausea and vomiting during flight. Studies of habituation to motion sickness in humans treated by scopolamine have produced conflicting results. The drug accelerated habituation, but a rebound effect on symptom severity was observed after its withdrawal. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether scopolamine affects the adaptation process. We also evaluated the relationship between initial symptom severity and adaptation to airsickness.METHODS: Aviator cadets in the first two stag

Emotion habituation is accelerated in chronic mild traumatic brain injury.

Primary Objective: Risk for mental health disturbances (e.g., depression and anxiety), is elevated following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), even in the chronic stages of injury. In our previous work, we found individuals with chronic mTBI have decreased emotion habituation. The objective of the current study was to test whether reduced habituation is a mechanism underlying increased risk for mental health disturbances following mTBI. Research Design: We used a cross-sectional assessment of emotion habituation in a sample of young adults at least 1 year after an mTBI. Methods and Procedu

Influence of stimulus interval on the habituation of vestibulo-ocular reflex and sensation of rotation in humans.

Previous studies in cats revealed that vestibular habituation of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) only occurs when velocity steps are delivered during the secondary phase nystagmus, suggesting that the presence of anti-compensatory slow phases may trigger the habituation process. We verified this property in humans by comparing vestibular habituation of VOR and sensation of rotation when steps were delivered either immediately after the perception of self-rotation had stopped, which is shortly before the nystagmus reverses direction; or when steps were delivered 60s later, i.e. during the sec

A unified computational model of the development of object unity, object permanence, and occluded object trajectory perception.

The perception of the unity of objects, their permanence when out of sight, and the ability to perceive continuous object trajectories even during occlusion belong to the first and most important capacities that infants have to acquire. Despite much research a unified model of the development of these abilities is still missing. Here we make an attempt to provide such a unified model. We present a recurrent artificial neural network that learns to predict the motion of stimuli occluding each other and that develops representations of occluded object parts. It represents completely occluded, mo

Effects of acceptance-oriented versus evaluative emotional processing on heart rate recovery and habituation.

The effects of emotional processing on stress response trajectories may depend on the nature of processing, as evaluative rumination about emotions can prolong distress. In contrast, observing negative emotions in an accepting manner may promote efficient recovery from stressful situations. The present study examined the effect of acceptance-oriented versus evaluative emotional processing on cardiovascular habituation and recovery. Across two experimental sessions, 81 participants were randomly assigned to write about an ongoing stressful experience while either (1) evaluating the appropriaten

Maturation of early visual processing investigated by a pattern-reversal habituation paradigm is altered in migraine.

Evidence for a disturbed maturation of information processing in migraine came recently from evoked and event-related potential studies during childhood. In adult migraineurs, deficient habituation is proposed as principal interictal abnormality and was found inter alia for Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs). This study investigated response and habituation to pattern-reversal VEPs and its maturation in 102 children with primary headache (migraine with and without aura, tension-type headache) and 79 healthy controls from 6 to 18 years. A reduction of N180 latency from pre- to postpubertal age ref

Further examination of the exposure model underlying the efficacy of written emotional disclosure.

In the current study, the authors examined the effects of systematically varying the writing instructions for the written emotional disclosure procedure. College undergraduates with a trauma history and at least moderate posttraumatic stress symptoms were asked to write about (a) the same traumatic experience, (b) different traumatic experiences, or (c) nontraumatic everyday events across 3 written disclosure sessions. Results show that participants who wrote about the same traumatic experience reported significant reductions in psychological and physical symptoms at follow-up assessments comp

Effects of prior apparatus experience and novelty of testing environment on locomotor activity following MK-801.

Robust increases in locomotor activity are observed following administration of dizocilpine maleate (MK-801). The present study investigated the effects of prior apparatus experience and manipulation of the testing environment on locomotor activity following peripheral MK-801. Gerbils were given zero or nine sessions of apparatus exposure prior to testing with MK-801 (0.1 mg/kg ip) or saline. Sessions were 10 min in duration and separated by 24 h. As previously reported, naive animals treated with MK-801 were significantly more active relative to controls. Exposure to the apparatus for nine se
