[Injury to the heel of the hand].

A fall onto the hand can be followed by ligament ruptures, bone fractures or dislocated fractures of the carpus. The diagnosis is based on history, clinical evaluation, and X-ray examination in two perpendicular planes, followed if necessary by CT scan or MRI scan. Lesions of the scapholunate ligaments cannot be definitely excluded except by arthroscopy. As well as fractures of the carpometacarpal joints, fractures involving the ring structure of the carpus or ligament ruptures between carpal bones are frequently observed, and these lead to significantly impaired biomechanics. The prognosis is

A Glove-Based Virtual Hand Rehabilitation System for Patients With Post-Traumatic Hand Injuries.

Recent studies have shown that virtual gamified therapy can be a potential adjunct to conventional orthopedic rehabilitation. However, the off-the-shelf gaming consoles used for virtual rehabilitation pose several practical challenges in deploying them in clinical settings. In this article, we present the design of a portable glove-based virtual hand rehabilitation system (RehabRelive Glove) that can be used at both clinics and homes for physiotherapy. We also evaluate the system's efficacy on patients with post-traumatic hand injuries. Thirty patients were randomly categorized into groups A (

Woodworking injuries: an epidemiologic survey of injuries sustained using woodworking machinery and hand tools.

Woodworking equipment produces approximately 720,000 injuries per year often causing severe psychologic and functional impairment. Responses from 1000 injured woodworkers to a demographic survey revealed that 60.5% of injuries occurred to amateur woodworkers; 42% of injuries were caused by the table saw and 37% of respondents reported amputation of one or more digits. The most significant causal factor reported was failure to use properly installed guards, but personal factors, such as fatigue and postprandial somnolence were also implicated. Twenty-seven percent of respondents required hospit

Pulley, Flexor, and Extensor Tendon Injuries of the Hand.

Tendon injuries represent the second most common injury of the hand (after fractures) and are a common scanning indication in radiology. Pulley injuries are very frequent in rock climbers with the A2 pulley the most commonly affected. Tendon and pulley injuries can be reliably evaluated using ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). US can be postulated as a first-line imaging modality, allowing dynamic examination. MRI is essential for cases with ongoing diagnostic doubt post-US and also for preoperative pulley reconstruction assessment.

Management of complications relating to complex traumatic hand injuries.

Complex hand injuries result in local trauma to osseous, neurovascular, and soft tissue structures. The large amount of energy imparted to these tissues may result in complex regional pain syndrome, stiffness, or infection. Unfortunately, a good outcome may not only depend on the technical aspects of the procedure but on the expectations, occupation, age, and other factors that are out of the surgeon's control. The best treatment for these complications is prevention; however, this review offers strategies to combat the complications once they arise.

Acute tendon injuries in the hand and their management.

Acute tendon injuries to the hand are common. In the UK, there are approximately 12000 inpatient admissions annually for injuries to the tendons and muscles of the hand and wrist (Dew, 2009). Hand injuries involving the dominant hand can cause long-term disability if not appropriately managed. Diagnosis of tendon injuries in the hand relies on careful clinical assessment, particularly if flexor and extensor tendon injuries are not to be missed. This article describes the tendon structure, explains the causes of tendon injury and discusses their assessment and management for a foundation level

Results of the treatment of major, complex hand injuries.

UNLABELLED: Complex hand injuries are associated with serious consequences including long period off-work, permanent disability, inability to return to original profession or to work at all. As these injuries are common, they create considerable economical consequences and, therefore, it is desirable their treatment would be as perfect as possible to reduce potential loss of function. The aim of the study was analysis of the structure of complex, multi-structural hand injuries and evaluation of the outcomes of the treatment of these injuries in both medical (recovery of function) and economica

Acute hand and wrist injuries in experienced rock climbers.

BACKGROUND: The sport of rock climbing has its own spectrum of injuries, almost half of which involve the wrist and hand. OBJECTIVE: To examine the incidence of acute wrist and hand injuries in 545 members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain. METHOD: A total of 1100 questionnaires were sent to current members of The Climbers' Club of Great Britain for them to detail any hand and wrist injuries sustained to date. In decade years, the climbing grades and time spent climbing at each grade were determined. From these results a total and historic climbing intensity score for each climber could

Epidemiology of amputations and severe injuries of the hand.

In a prospective population-based study, all open hand, wrist, and forearm injuries that were treated during a 10-year period, at hospitals and emergency wards in three Norwegian cities with 225,000 inhabitants, were registered. Injury severity was graded using the abbreviated injury scale (AIS). For moderate injuries (AIS 2) overall incidence (95% CI) was 59 (56-62), incidence among males 92 (86-98), and among females 28 (25-31) per 100,000 person-years. For severe injuries (AIS > or = 3), overall incidence (95% CI) was 7.5 (6.3-8.6), incidence among males 11.1 (9.1-13.1), and among females 4

[Primary management of flexor tendon injuries of the hand].

The repair of interrupted flexor tendons of the hand and their return to satisfactory function has been one of the most difficult and challenging tasks and problems even for the hand surgeon. Accordingly, nearly all publications have dealt with suture techniques, suture material and even the number of knots with regard to vascularization, course of sheaths and biology of healing. The aim of all surgical intentions is intrinsic healing, with as few adhesions as possible. On the one hand, this requires non-traumatic treatment of the tendon, respecting the dorsally located blood support and, on t

Predictive value of psychological screening in acute hand injuries.

Difficulties in adjustment frequently accompany severe hand injuries. The purpose of this study was to determine whether presurgical screening could predict long-term adjustment problems. One hundred thirteen patients with severe hand injuries completed a presurgical questionnaire evaluating flashbacks, avoidance, and causal factors pertaining to the injury. Patients were evaluated by a psychologist within 5 days after surgery and again 6 months later. Flashbacks initially occurred with equal frequency in occupationally and nonoccupationally injured groups. At 6-month follow-up 50% of the occu
