PURPOSE: Several studies have been conducted to determine the prevalence and presence of helminth species in European brown hare populations in various parts of its geographical range. However, there are limited data on helminth species circulating among European brown hare populations in Türkiye. The aim of this study is to investigate the presence and prevalence of helminth species in European brown hares in Türkiye, to perform phylogenetic analyses of the identified species, and to determine haplotype diversity and network properties of Dicrocoelium dendriticum and Passalurus ambiguus. BACKGROUND: Recent studies in human have highlighted the importance of the monocyte chemotactic proteins (MCP) in leukocyte trafficking and their effects in inflammatory processes, tumor progression, and HIV-1 infection. In European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) one of the prime MCP targets, the chemokine receptor CCR5 underwent a unique structural alteration. Until now, no homologue of MCP-2/CCL8a, MCP-3/CCL7 or MCP-4/CCL13 genes have been reported for this species. This is interesting, because at least the first two genes are expressed in most, if not all, mammals studied, and appear to be

Dolabellanin A (DAA), the antineoplastic and antibacterial glycoprotein purified from the albumen gland of Dolabella auricularia, showed an antifungal activity. DAA suppressed fungal growth completely at a concentration of over 2 micrograms/ml, and the colony forming ability of the fungus was significantly decreased after contact with DAA. These results indicate that DAA is an antifungal protein and its mode of antifungal activity is fungicidal.

Various bone abnormalities, including osteoporosis, have been associated with chronic arsenic and cadmium exposure in experimental animal models, but information regarding the bone pathology of wild population of small mammals breeding in contaminated environment is limited. This present study was conducted to comparatively assess the prevalence and pattern of skeletal abnormalities in free ranging snowshoe hares inhabiting an area heavily contaminated by arsenic and other trace metals, near the vicinity of the abandoned Giant mine, and in a reference location approximately 20km from the city

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease that exemplifies the One Health interface due to its global distribution and diversity of hosts in which it can infect and potentially cause disease. While T. gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, has been well-described in many wildlife taxa, including wild and domestic birds and mammals, there is limited published research on clinical disease in wild lagomorphs and rodents. Furthermore, despite detection in wild lagomorphs in Europe and Australia, T. gondii as a cause of clinical disease has yet to be described in wild lagomorphs in the USA. Here,

A nematode species from the Protostrongylidae family, unknown in the parasite fauna of Bulgaria until now, was found in the bronchi of a European brown hare (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778 L.) from a southwestern region of the country. At first the systematic identification of the found specimens was attributed to two possibilities-Protostrongylus terminalis Passerini (1884) Schulz, Orlow & Kutass, 1933 and Protostrongylus cuniculorum (Joyeux & Gaud, 1946) Schulz & Kadenazii, 1949. The autonomy of these two species was discussed based on data available in the literature. Morphological and morpho

This study was carried out to detect lice species found on hares (L. europaeus, L.) in the Konya province. Several lice individuals were collected on a hare and were kept in 70% alcohol. Then, they were cleaned in 10% KOH for 24 hours, washed in distilled water, stored in 70%, 80%, 90% and 96% alcohol for 24 hours for each step. They were mounted on the slides in Canada balsam and examined under a binocular light microscope. Two of the species were identified as Haemodipsus leporis Blagoveshtchensky, 1966, while the others were H. lyriocephalus (Burmeister, 1839). H. leporis was found on L. eu

Methanotrophs have been widely investigated for in situ bioremediation due to their ubiquity and their ability to degrade halogenated hydrocarbons through the activity of methane monooxygenase (MMO). It has been speculated that cells expressing the soluble form of MMO (sMMO) are more efficient in cleaning up sites polluted with halogenated hydrocarbons due to its broader substrate range and relatively fast degradation rates compared cells expressing the other form of MMO, the particulate MMO (pMMO). To examine this issue, the biodegradation of mixtures of chlorinated solvents, i.e., trichloroe

BACKGROUND: Recurrent mitral regurgitation (MR) can occur even after successful transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER). While some reports show the utility of repeat clipping for recurrent MR, the results are unsatisfactory. We describe a patient who underwent repeat clipping for MR that recurred from both sides of the original clip.
CASE SUMMARY: An 89-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with congestive heart failure. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiograms (TTE/TEE) revealed severe MR due to A2 (middle segment of the anterior leaflet) prolapse. Because of hi

The genus Lagovirus, belonging to the family Caliciviridae, emerged around the 1980s. It includes highly pathogenic species, rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV/GI.1) and European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV/GII.1), which cause fatal hepatitis, and nonpathogenic viruses with enteric tropism, rabbit calicivirus (RCV/GI.3,4) and hare calicivirus (HaCV/GII.2). Lagoviruses have evolved along two independent genetic lineages: GI (RHDV and RCV) in rabbits and GII (EBHSV and HaCV) in hares. To be emphasized is that genomes of lagoviruses, like other caliciviruses, are highly conserved at RdRp

In the northernmost German federal state Schleswig-Holstein, populations of European brown hares (Lepus europaeus Pallas, 1778) show diverse densities and varying courses over the years. To examine differences in pathomorphological findings and infectious diseases as possible reasons for varying population dynamics, we assessed 155 hunted hares from three locations in Schleswig-Holstein from 2016 to 2020. We investigated the association of location, year, age, and sex of animals to certain pathomorphological findings and infectious diseases. Frequent pathomorphological findings were intestinal

Lagovirus is an emerging genus of Caliciviridae, which includes the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHDV) of rabbits and the European brown hare syndrome virus (EBHSV) of hares that cause lethal hepatitis. In 2010, a new RHDV related virus (RHDV2) with a unique genetic and antigenic profile and lower virulence was identified in France in rabbits. Here we report the identification of RHDV2 as the cause in Sardinia of several outbreaks of acute hepatitis in rabbits and Cape hare (Lepus capensis mediterraneus). This is the first account of a lagovirus that causes fatal hepatitis in both rabbits

Fascioliasis has recently been included in the WHO list of Neglected Zoonotic Diseases. Besides being a major veterinary health problem, fascioliasis has large underdeveloping effects on the human communities affected. Though scarcely considered in fascioliasis epidemiology, it is well recognized that both native and introduced wildlife species may play a significant role as reservoirs of the disease. The objectives are to study the morphological characteristics of Fasciola hepatica adults and eggs in a population of Lepus europaeus, to assess liver fluke prevalence, and to analyze the potenti

Previous gold mining activities and arsenopyrite ore roasting activities at the Giant mine site (1948 to 2004) resulted in the release of high amounts of arsenic and trace metals into the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. While elevated levels of arsenic has been consistently reported in surface soils and vegetation near the vicinity of the Giant mine area and in surrounding locations, systematic studies evaluating the overall health status of terrestrial small mammals endemic to the area are lacking. The purpose of this present study was to eval

Our previous study highlighted the anticancer potential of sea hare hydrolysate (SHH), particularly its role in regulating macrophage polarization and inducing pyroptotic death in lung cancer cells through the inhibition of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). These findings prompted us to investigate additional features of immune-oncology (I-O) agents or adjuvants, such as programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1)/programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibition and their association with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) risk, to explore the potential of SHH as an I-O agent or adjuva

BACKGROUND: A cross-species jump was confirmed in 2018, when a novel recombinant myxoma virus (MYXV) (ha-MYXV) caused high mortality in Iberian hare (Lepus granatensis) in the Iberian Peninsula.
METHOD: The aim of this study was to evaluate the main lesions, tissular distribution and target cells of ha-MYXV in Iberian hare. Gross postmortem examinations and histological and immunohistochemical studies to detect ha-MYXV were carried out in 28 animals that were confirmed as ha-MYXV positive by PCR.
RESULTS: The main macroscopic lesions were bilateral blepharoconjunctivitis, epistaxis, intense

The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentrations of 17 heavy metals measured in the liver and kidney tissues of the European brown hare (Lepus europaeus) as a function of age, sex, organ type, and sampling area. In addition, we assessed the relationships between trace element profiles and reproductive parameters and highlighted their potential relevance from a food-safety perspective. Age-related comparisons revealed significantly higher concentrations of Ti, Fe, Cd, and Hg in adult individuals, whereas no statistically significant differences were detected for the remaining elements.

There exist many tick borne infections that are of either economic or public health interest. Mathematical models have previously been used to describe the dynamics of these infections. However it has recently come to light that there is an alternative mechanism for the transmission of these diseases that has not been considered in a modelling framework. This is transmission through ticks co-feeding on non-viraemic hosts. This paper extends a simple mathematical model to include this alternative transmission mechanism. The model is used to describe the dynamics of Louping ill virus in red grou
