Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies are elevated in Graves' disease but not in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Anti-Saccharomyces cerevisiae antibodies (ASCA) had been known to be specific for Crohn's disease, but they had also been found in many other autoimmune diseases. AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of ASCA in patients with autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred and ninety-seven patients with AITD and 160 healthy controls were included in the study. One hundred and nineteen patients had Graves' disease (GD) and 78 patients had Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). ASCA IgG and IgA were determined by ELISA. RESULTS: ASCA IgG were signif

Reversible Horner's syndrome and dysthyroid ocular myopathy associated with Hashimoto's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been frequently stated that thyroid disease induces Horner's syndrome, there have been few reports describing the anatomical relation of goiter to the cervical preganglionic sympathetic nerve fibers in acquired Horner's syndrome, which is identified by the eye-drop test for adrenergic sensitivity. CASE: A 40-year-old woman with Hashimoto's disease presented with vertical diplopia, and blepharoptosis and miosis on the left side. OBSERVATIONS: Computed tomography scan showed hypertrophy of the right inferior rectus muscle, which resulted from a dysthyroid process, c

Bilateral keratoconus associated with Hashimoto's disease, alopecia areata and atopic keratoconjunctivitis.

Keratoconus is a progressive non-inflammatory corneal ectasia. Alopecia areata is complete loss of hair patches on the hairy areas of the body in association with some ocular manifestations such as cataract, or disorders of the conjunctiva, iris, lens, choroid and retina pigment epithelium. A ten-year-old patient with atopic keratoconjunctivitis, keratoconus and alopecia areata is presented. This patient has also been receiving treatment for Hashimoto thyroiditis (chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis) for more than three years. The possible association of keratoconus with multisystem autoimmune dis

Patients with Hashimoto's disease treated with L-thyroxine and followed for three years.

This study investigated the effectiveness of L-thyroxine management in 32 patients (mean age 11 years and 2 months; M:F = 1:5) with Hashimoto's disease followed annually for 3 years. One (8%) of the 12 patients, euthyroid at the onset, never required treatment; of the four (33%) who began treatment immediately, two were able to stop at the 1st or 2nd follow-up, whereas two had to continue. The other seven (59%) who did not begin treatment immediately had to start at the 1st, 2nd or 3rd follow-up. The findings in this small series suggest that hormone management may prove effective to a certain

Heterogeneity of TSH receptor-binding antibodies in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

The possible heterogeneity of TSH receptor antibodies in Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) with respect to the binding site on the receptor and corresponding biological effect was studied. Employing an immunoprecipitation assay (IPA), the sera of 80% of the patients with GD (24 out of 30) and 76% of the patients with HT (16 out of 21) contained TSH receptor-binding antibodies, compared to none of the sera from 17 normal volunteers and 8 patients with nontoxic multinodular goiter. TSH inhibited immunoprecipitation by GD and HT sera. In HT sera (n = 9), but not in GD sera (n

Anterior pituitary cell antibodies detected in Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.

An immunofluorescence study using unfixed cryostat sections of rat pituitary glands was carried out on sera from 34 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 28 patients with Graves' disease, 10 patients with thyroid adenoma and 50 healthy subjects. After absorption of sera with rat liver tissues, 19 of 34 patients retained reactivity to anterior pituitary cell antibodies (PCA, 55.8%). On the other hand, immunofluorescence in anterior pituitary cells was faint and detected in only 2 of 28 patients with Graves' disease (7.1%) after absorption of their sera with rat liver aceton powder. [A case report of Hashimoto's disease with anti-thyroxine autoantibody (author's transl)].

In one case of untreated Hashimoto's disease, serum thyroxine (T4) value by radioimmunoassay (RIA) was significantly lower than that by competitive protein binding analysis (CPBA). The discrepancy was found to be due to the presence of antithyroxine autoantibody in the serum. This phenomenon was considered to be of practical importance in interpreting the T4 value by RIA in cases with autoimmune thyroid diseases. The patient was 59-year-old woman with a 30-year history of goiter. A diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis had been established by open biopsy of the thyroid ten years ago. The patien

Unicentric mixed variant Castleman disease associated with Hashimoto disease: the role of PET/CT in staging and evaluating response to the treatment.

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare atypical lymphoproliferative disease, pathologically classified as hyaline vascular, plasma cell type and mixed type variant. The underlying cause of CD is unknown, however several theories including autoimmunity have been proposed. We describe a patient diagnosed with unicentric mixed variant CD and Hashimoto thyroiditis, concurrently. She was staged with fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) and the disease was localized to the mediastinum. After 6 cycles of chemotherapy consisting of vincristine and prednisone,

The frequency of co-occurrence of Hashimoto disease in granulomatous mastitis patients and its relation to hematological parameters.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) is a benign, chronic inflammatory breast disease frequently associated with autoimmune disorders. This prospective cohort study explored the prevalence of Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) in patients with IGM and the relationship between this co-occurrence and systemic inflammatory markers. METHODS: Between March 2019 and September 2022, 179 women were enrolled: IGM without HT (n = 52), IGM + HT (n = 19), and age-matched healthy controls (n = 89). Hematological indices, including white blood cell count, C-reactive protein, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte

Prolonged Conscious Disturbance in a Patient with Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease Masquerading as Hashimoto Encephalopathy: A Case Report.

We report a 72-year-old female presenting with acute consciousness disturbance, ultimately diagnosed with Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease (NIID) masquerading as Hashimoto encephalopathy. Comprehensive evaluations revealed elevated antithyroid peroxidase antibodies, characteristic magnetic resonance imaging findings, and genetic confirmation of NIID. Corticosteroid treatment led to partial improvement, but persistent symptoms highlighted the complex presentation of NIID. This rare clinical presentation underscores the importance of thorough diagnostic approaches in complex neurological

[A case of 'hallucination of soliloquy' with hypothyroidism induced Hashimoto disease. Meaning of psychopathological research about symptomatic psychosis].

We describe the first reported case of symptomatic psychosis with the 'hallucination of soliloquy.' A 48[correction of 40]-year-old woman with Hashimoto disease exhibited of compulsive checking, mysophobia, and excessive hand washing. When these obsessive-compulsive symptoms diminished, she began to suffer from the 'hallucination of soliloquy', the automatic flow of meaningless words inside her mind. As the 'soliloquy' increased, her mood became unstable and she attempted suicide by analgesic ingestion. After this, she was admitted to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital. The administrat

Autoimmune Polyglandular Syndrome Type 2 Presentation with Alopecia Universalis, Hashimoto's Disease, and Addison's Disease.

Autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 2 (APS2) is characterized by the coexistence of primary adrenal insufficiency with autoimmune thyroid disease and/or type 1 diabetes. APS2 frequently includes conditions affecting non-endocrine organs, such as alopecia, vitiligo, celiac disease, and autoimmune gastritis associated with vitamin B12 deficiency. We report the case of a 30-year-old male with a history of Hashimoto's disease and alopecia universalis, who presented with diarrhea, anorexia, hypoglycemia, and abdominal pain. Physical examination revealed orthostatic hypotension, a non-tender abdo

New-Onset Graves' Disease in the Background of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Spectrums of the Same Disease With Changing Autoantibodies.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease represent two spectrums of the same autoimmune thyroiditis. Evolution from Graves' disease to Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common scenario but conversion is a rare occurrence that we observed in the presented case of a 56-year-old Hispanic female with a history of Hashimoto's thyroiditis with positive anti-thyroperoxidase (TPO) antibodies who was euthyroid on levothbefore75 µg for six years prior to her presentation to the emergency department (ED) with complaints of palpitations, exertional dyspnea, and unintentional weight loss of 20 lbs for four m

Gene polymorphisms of VEGF and VEGFR2 are associated with the severity of Hashimoto's disease and the intractability of Graves' disease, respectively.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is one of main regulators of angiogenesis that functions by binding to its receptors, including VEGF receptor (VEGFR) 2. There are few data available regarding the association between VEGF and VEGFR polymorphisms and the susceptibility to and prognosis of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs). To elucidate this association, we genotyped four functional VEGF and two VEGFR2 polymorphisms and measured serum VEGF levels. In the four functional VEGF polymorphisms, the frequencies of the I carrier and I allele of VEGF -2549 I/D, which has lower activity, were
