Comparison of metabolic substrates in alligators and several birds of prey.

On average, avian blood glucose concentrations are 1.5-2 times those of mammals of similar mass and high concentrations of insulin are required to lower blood glucose. Whereas considerable data exist for granivorous species, few data are available for plasma metabolic substrate and glucoregulatory hormone concentrations for carnivorous birds and alligators. Birds and mammals with carnivorous diets have higher metabolic rates than animals consuming diets with less protein whereas alligators have low metabolic rates. Therefore, the present study was designed to compare substrate and glucoregulat

When egalitarianism legitimizes inequality: Implications for gender disparities in organizations.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden's process-based account of egalitarianism provides a powerful framework for understanding how egalitarian systems coexist with inequality. Extending this perspective to modern organizations, we argue that such processes may inadvertently legitimize gender disparities. Equality initiatives that rely on moral signaling alone are insufficient; effective interventions must counterbalance the self-interested dynamics through which status and opportunity are allocated.

Epidermis lesion detection via optimized distributed capsule neural network.

Skin cancer, encompassing various forms such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and others, remains a significant global health concern, often proving fatal if not diagnosed and treated in its early stages. The challenge of accurately diagnosing skin cancer, particularly melanoma, persists even for experienced dermatologists due to the intricate and unpredictable nature of its symptoms. To address the need for more accurate and efficient skin cancer detection, a novel Golden Hawk Optimization-based Distributed Capsule Neural Network (GHO-DCaNN) is proposed. This novel technique leverages advan

Neurological examination of clinically healthy pigeons (Columba livia domestica), mute swans (Cygnus olor), common buzzards (Buteo buteo), common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and northern goshawks (Accipiter gentilis).

BACKGROUND: A neurological examination is essential for determining the localisation of neurological lesions. However, in avian species, quantitative data regarding the practicability and feasibility of neurological tests are very limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish normative data for the neurological examination of clinically healthy birds of different species. METHODS: Forty-two domestic and feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica), 42 mute swans (Cygnus olor), 12 common buzzards (Buteo buteo), 24 common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and six northern goshawks (Accipiter

Feeding en route: Prey availability and traits influence prey selection by an avian predator on migration.

During animal migration, ephemeral communities of taxa at all trophic levels co-occur over space and time. The interactions between predators and prey along migration corridors are ecologically and evolutionarily significant. However, these interactions remain understudied in terrestrial systems and warrant further investigations using novel approaches. We investigated the predator-prey interactions between a migrating avivorous predator and ephemeral avian prey community in the fall migration season. We tested for associations between avian traits and prey selection and hypothesized that prey

A problem facing process-egalitarianism: Why do individuals surrender autonomy to political community?

This comment accepts the distinction that Duncan Stibbard-Hawkes and Chris von Rueden make: the difference between process-egalitarianism and outcome-egalitarianism. It also accepts that most historical societies care more about process- than outcome-egalitarianism. However, a question remains. If people care about process-egalitarianism, how come they are ready to surrender autonomy - i.e., ability to make decisions of their own - to a political community?

Modeling and Estimation of Temporal Episode Patterns in Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: The present study proposes a model-based, statistical approach to characterizing episode patterns in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). Thanks to the rapid advancement of noninvasive monitoring technology, the proposed approach should become increasingly relevant in clinical practice. METHODS: History-dependent point process modeling is employed to characterize AF episode patterns, using a novel alternating, bivariate Hawkes self-exciting model. In addition, a modified version of a recently proposed statistical model to simulate AF progression throughout a lifetime is considered,

Helminth community structure in birds of prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in southern Italy.

We compared helminth communities in 6 species of birds of prey from the Calabria region of southern Italy. In total, 31 helminth taxa, including 17 nematodes, 9 digeneans, 3 acanthocephalans, and 2 cestodes, were found. All helminth species were observed in the gastrointestinal tract, except for 3 spirurid nematodes. Most of the parasite species were detected in at least 2 hosts, but 13 helminth species were found in only 1 host. At the infracommunity level, the overall species richness and Brillouin's index of diversity varied by host, with the highest values in a generalist feeder, the Euras

The developmental origins of egalitarianism.

Stibbard-Hawkes and von Rueden argue that egalitarianism is best understood through process rather than outcome. We extend this by showing that the same inequalities and processes found in hunter-gatherer societies exist among children's peer cultures. This consistency, alongside early-emerging concerns for mutual respect, suggests egalitarianism may reflect foundational processes in social cognition, which particular ecologies and subsistence practices can refine.

Clinical and pathologic features of lineage 2 West Nile virus infections in birds of prey in Hungary.

In the southeast of Hungary a sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus) and several goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) fledglings succumbed to encephalitis manifesting as an acute neurological disease during the summers of 2004 and 2005. Both years the causative agent was identified as a lineage 2 West Nile virus. This is the first description of clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical findings of infection caused by a neuroinvasive, lineage 2 West Nile virus and the first evidence of its circulation in continental Europe.

A new species of Microtetrameres (Nematoda, Tetrameridae) parasitizing Buteogallus urubitinga (Aves, Accipitridae) from northeastern Argentina.

A new tetramerid nematode, Microtetrameres urubitinga n. sp., is described from specimens recovered from the proventriculus of the great black-hawk, Buteogallus urubitinga (Aves: Accipitridae), from Formosa Province, Argentina. The males of the new species are characterized by having spicules unequal (length ratio of spicules 1:3.8-5.9) and dissimilar in shape (right spicule with a simple tip, left spicule with a symmetrical bifurcated tip), caudal papillae arranged asymmetrically (two pairs precloacal and two pairs postcloacal) and cloacal lips highly protruded forming a tube. The gravid fema

Leveraging best practices: protecting sub-Saharan African prison detainees amid COVID-19.

The risk of infection and death from COVID-19 is higher among older prisoners with pre-existing health conditions especially in sub-Saharan African. Hawks L et al. raise four concerns that need to be considered when developing public health and clinical responses to COVID-19 to protect prisoners. This paper applies these concerns to the sub-Saharan African context. These focus areas include 1) challenges of social distancing; 2) higher risk of severe infection and death; 3) difficulties health care systems may face in the case of COVID-19 surge; and 4) recommended solutions to prevent harm and

The paradox of cooperation benefits.

It seems obvious that as the benefits of cooperation increase, the share of cooperators in the population should also increase. It is well known that positive assortment between cooperative types, for instance in spatially structured populations, provide better conditions for the evolution of cooperation than complete mixing. This study demonstrates that, assuming positive assortment, under most conditions higher cooperation benefits also increase the share of cooperators. On the other hand, under a specified range of payoff values, when at least two payoff parameters are modified, the reverse

Deep computer vision with artificial intelligence based sign language recognition to assist hearing and speech-impaired individuals.

Sign language (SL) is a non-verbal language applied by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals for daily communication between them. Studies in SL recognition (SLR) have recently become essential developments. The current successes present the base for upcoming applications to assist the combination of deaf and hard-of-hearing people. SLR could help break down the obstacles for SL users in the community. In general, glove-based and vision-based techniques are the dual major types measured for SLR methods. Several investigators presented various techniques with significant development by deep lear

Exceptionally well preserved late Quaternary plant and vertebrate fossils from a blue hole on Abaco, The Bahamas.

We report Quaternary vertebrate and plant fossils from Sawmill Sink, a "blue hole" (a water-filled sinkhole) on Great Abaco Island, The Bahamas. The fossils are well preserved because of deposition in anoxic salt water. Vertebrate fossils from peat on the talus cone are radiocarbon-dated from approximately 4,200 to 1,000 cal BP (Late Holocene). The peat produced skeletons of two extinct species (tortoise Chelonoidis undescribed sp. and Caracara Caracara creightoni) and two extant species no longer in The Bahamas (Cuban crocodile, Crocodylus rhombifer; and Cooper's or Gundlach's Hawk, Accipiter

Anticoagulant Rodenticide Contamination of Terrestrial Birds of Prey from Western Canada: Patterns and Trends, 1988-2018.

As the dominant means for control of pest rodent populations globally, anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), particularly the second-generation compounds (SGARs), have widely contaminated nontarget organisms. We present data on hepatic residues of ARs in 741 raptorial birds found dead or brought into rehabilitation centers in British Columbia, Canada, over a 30-year period from 1988 to 2018. Exposure varied by species, by proximity to residential areas, and over time, with at least one SGAR residue detected in 74% of individuals and multiple residues in 50% of individuals. By comparison, we detect

All that glitters is not gold: The false-symbol problem in archaeology.

Stibbard-Hawkes forcefully alerts us to the pitfall of false-negative reasoning in symbolic archaeology. We highlight the twin problem of false-positive reasoning in what we call the "false-symbol problem." False symbols are intuitively special entities that, owing to their non-utilitarian nature, invite symbolic interpretation. But they are not symbolic. We link the false-symbol problem to work in comparative primate cognition, taking "primate art" as our main example.
