Determinants Influencing Cardiovascular Health Behavior Change among Adults: A Narrative Review.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with a disproportionately high burden in low- and middle-income countries. Despite strong evidence supporting lifestyle modification, the adoption of cardiovascular health-promoting behaviors remains suboptimal. This narrative review aimed to synthesize evidence on determinants influencing cardiovascular health behavior change among adults. A comprehensive search of PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Research Gate was conducted for studies published between 2020 and 2024. Original quantitative, qualit

Age-related decline in behavior and reproductive health in male mice.

Research on reproductive advanced age has predominantly focused on women due to their biological clock. The impact of paternal senescence on fertility and offspring is still poorly understood. In this study, we characterized the effects of aging on sexual behavior and reproductive characteristics using male mice aged 4 months as a control, compared to mice aged 19 and 24 months. In the first experiment, we observed that reproductive interest and locomotor activity were reduced in older males, accompanied by reduced serum testosterone levels and testicular weight. We observed increased sperm mo

Exploring practitioners' perceptions of health behavior changes associated with psychedelic experiences.

In addition to evidence supporting the use of psychedelics in treating alcohol and tobacco misuse, emerging research suggests that psychedelic experiences may also facilitate beneficial changes in other health behaviors, such as diet, exercise, and meditation. This retrospective, survey-based study explored perceived health behavior changes following psychedelic experiences, from the perspective of 96 psychedelic practitioners, working in both legal and underground contexts. Practitioners reported on perceived changes in their clients' or patients' behaviors, including physical activity, diet

Improving Identification of Gig Workers in National Health and Behavior Surveys.

This paper describes the work-related information collected in several important U.S. national health and behavior surveys, to highlight data gaps that prevent identifying responses by vulnerable workers in the gig economy, with emphasis on the growing digital platform sector of the work force. The national information systems used to understand health status and health behaviors, including drug use, rely on outdated census categories for self-employed workers. This paper describes the importance of understanding the needs of this growing part of the labor sector and describes how some of the

How Does Psychosocial Behavior Contribute to Cognitive Health in Old Age?

With the aging of the U.S. population, the number of cognitively disabled persons is expected to substantially increase in coming decades, underscoring the urgent need for effective interventions. Here, we review the current evidence linking psychosocial factors to late-life cognitive loss and consider the study design needed to illuminate the biologic bases of the associations. We then examine an ongoing study that includes several of the key design elements, the Rush Memory and Aging Project. In this longitudinal clinical-pathological cohort study, indicators of personality, social connected

Oral health behavior and metabolic syndrome and its components in adults.

Inflammation has been strongly related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). Periodontal disease is the most common chronic infection in adults. We investigated a cross-sectional (n = 925) and 3-year longitudinal (n = 685) relationship between the daily frequency of toothbrushing and MetS. In the cross-sectional analysis, the prevalence of MetS was 15.7%. After adjustment for potential confounding factors (including all lifestyle factors), the odds ratios (95% confidence interval [CI]) of having MetS in those who brushed 2 times/day and ≥ 3 times/day were 0.71 (0.48-1.05) and 0.47 (0.24-0.92), respect

A systematic review of factors utilized in preconception health behavior research.

This systematic review critically synthesizes the literature focusing on factors related to preconception health behaviors (PCHBs) among childbearing age women in the United States, developed countries, and developing countries. Ovid Medline and CINAHL databases were searched for peer-reviewed articles published between 1998 and 2008 relating to PCHB. Six major categories of factors were identified: frequency of alcohol intake prior and during pregnancy, glycemic control/diabetes management, physical activity before and during pregnancy, pregnancy planning behavior, cystic fibrosis carrier scr

Extramasticatory dental wear reflecting habitual behavior and health in past populations.

In skeletal remains, teeth are valuable sources of information regarding age, diet, and health. Dental wear is especially helpful in reconstructions of dietary patterns in populations of varying subsistence. In past societies, teeth have also been used as "a third hand" or as a "tool." The present article examines this type of dental wear and traits attributed to habitual behavior during prehistoric and historic times. Terminology and classification of habitual dental wear are described mainly by appearance, for instance, notching, grooving, cuts, scrapes, and polished surfaces, and their char

[Adolescents living on their own--social control and health related behavior].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social control is an important dimension in the interaction between members of social groups. Such control may contribute to adherence to group norms and prevent health related risk behaviour. Adolescents moving out from home to live on their own may become left to themselves and lose their social network and mechanisms of control. We wanted to examine to what extent high school students living in lodgings were different from students living at home concerning health and health related behaviour. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was based on data from a cross section
