Progress in community health partnerships : research, education, and action2020eng
BACKGROUND: Depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States. African Americans are disproportionately affected owing to systemic and sociocultural factors. Stigma, denial, and inadequate knowledge on depression are significant barriers to mental help seeking. Addressing mental health literacy can improve mental health knowledge, management, and outcomes. West Louisville, a predominantly African American community, is of particular interest regarding mental health literacy given existing socioeconomic and health disparities. Boot Camp Translation (BCT), a community-based part

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact beyond physical morbidity and mortality. A mid-cycle Community Health Needs Assessment survey was administered in 1 community to generate data to evaluate change in community well-being since the beginning of the pandemic.
METHODS: Surveys were mailed to 2,000 randomly selected residents in Olmsetd County, Minnesota. The surveys included the WHO Well-being Index (previously included in the 2018 Community Health Needs Assessment) and new subjective questions regarding behavior change. Changes in well-being were calculated using a

BACKGROUND: Community Case Management of malaria (CCMm) using Community Health Workers (CHWs) is an approach to improve access to timely and effective malaria case management in malaria endemic countries. So far the programme has been shown to be effective in many communities in sub-Saharan Africa. However, questions remain on the sustainability of this programme due to the high dropout cases of CHWs given their modest remuneration. The aim of the study was to identify challenges of achieving sustainable community health services for CCMm.
METHODS: A community based qualitative study was cond

The HIV response in the African continent over past decades demonstrates the potency that the words and actions of political leaders have in either expediting or impeding the implementation and adoption of preventive measures at the individual and community levels. The article explores the health communication approaches employed by two South African past presidents (Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma) in responding to the HIV epidemic, and contrasts these with the communicative approach of President Cyril Ramaphosa during the COVID-19 pandemic. Approached from this understanding, this article provide

BACKGROUND: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) disproportionately affect low- and middle-income countries, including Ethiopia. However, community health workers' (CHWs') capacity in NCD health promotion is sometimes limited.
AIM: This study aimed to co-design a contextually appropriate intervention with and for CHWs to support their NCD health promotion services.
SETTING: This co-design study was conducted in Gondar City, northwest Ethiopia. The workshops were held in the meeting hall at the University of Gondar.
METHODS: A qualitative participatory action research design, guided by the PRODU

BACKGROUND: While the relationship between speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) and mental health difficulties has been recognized, speech and language therapists (SLTs), and mental health professionals face challenges in assessing and treating children with these co-occurring needs. There exists a gap in the evidence base for best practice for professionals working with children and young people (CYP) who experience difficulties in both areas.
AIMS: To explore the views of SLTs and mental health clinicians about their experiences of working with CYP exhibiting co-occurring SLCN an

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are vulnerable to various sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems such as unintended pregnancy, HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unsafe abortion. Adolescent-friendly health services offer SRH services such as SRH counseling, contraceptive services, STI and HIV services, and abortion-related services, which may help prevent these risks. Parent-adolescent communication about SRH prevents adolescents from adopting unhealthy SRH practices. However, its association with the utilization of SRH services is less known. Therefore, this study examine

Background and Purpose: This study aimed to develop a valid and reliable measurement instrument to assess nurses' community health competencies, based on preliminary findings identifying core competencies in public health nursing. Methods: The study was conducted with 769 nurses working in university hospitals, city hospitals, and primary care centers in a province in Eastern Turkey. Data were collected using a Descriptive Information Form and the Community Health Competency Scale for Nurses. PURPOSE: We conducted a cross-sectional cohort study to assess how continuity of primary care within community-based health centers (CHCs) might have changed during the years surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and how continuity varied by patient and visit characteristics.
METHODS: In a national sample of CHCs providing primary care, we assessed the usual provider of care (UPC) index-the fraction of patient visits to the patient's most frequently seen clinician within the CHC-for patients with at least 2 primary care encounters within a calendar year during 2019-2023. We used age-stratified mu

Exposure to the local community is crucial and pivotal to deliver contextual learning to medical students and thereby aid in the process of attaining subject-specific competencies. In the field of medical education, community health immersion refers to a set of systematic and immersive educational experiences for medical students to expose them to sociocultural and health-related attributes of the general population. Community health immersion has been linked with multiple merits that are crucial in the making of a competent medical graduate, who is well equipped to deliver patient-centered ca

Since the turn of the century, there has been an increase in the frequency of chronic interstitial nephritis in agricultural communities. This is particularly evident in young farm workers from equatorial regions, where the prevalence of chronic kidney disease cannot be explained by classical risk determinants or exposure to heat stress alone. Potentially causal agents have included organic and inorganic drinking water contaminants. This review explores geographic variability in exposure to these drinking water contaminants, with an emphasis on understanding their role in kidney injury in the

Living on the streets continues to be a traumatic and dangerous lifestyle that creates many challenges in society, especially challenges related to community health and health care. In San Antonio, Texas, half of the unhoused population is Hispanic, aligning with national reports that document how Hispanics/Latinxs are overrepresented in the unhoused communities. Street Medicine™ programs are surfacing nationwide and around the world, frequently as medical schools' initiatives, to provide medical care to unhoused populations, providing a unique learning opportunity for medical students and oth

Objectives: Children living in urban areas experience disproportionate rates of asthma. Substandard housing conditions in some urban areas contribute to greater exposure to household asthma triggers. This article examines the geographic connection between pediatric asthma and substandard housing in one mid-sized city in Pennsylvania and the effectiveness of a home-based Community Health Worker (CHW) intervention targeted at this high-risk area to improve families' abilities to manage their children's asthma. Methods: The CHWs provided education and resources to families of children diagnosed wi

BACKGROUND: Non-standard management of medical waste leads to irreparable side effects. This issue is of double importance in health care centers in a city which are the most extensive system for providing Primary Health Care (PHC) across Iran cities. This study investigated the medical waste management standards observation in Tabriz community health care centers, northwestern Iran.
METHODS: In this triangulated cross-sectional study (qualitative-quantitative), data collecting tool was a valid checklist of waste management process developed based on Iranian medical waste management standards

Industrial food animal production (IFAP) is a source of environmental microbial and chemical hazards. A growing body of literature suggests that populations living near these operations and manure-applied crop fields are at elevated risk for several health outcomes. We reviewed the literature published since 2000 and identified four health outcomes consistently and positively associated with living near IFAP: respiratory outcomes, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Q fever, and stress/mood. We found moderate evidence of an association of IFAP with quality of life and limited e

In this article we describe a focus group study of the perspectives of diverse groups of mental health consumers on the concept of community. We identify the core domains that constitute the notion of community, and commonalities and differences in the perception of community along the lines of ethnicity and sexual orientation/gender identity. Seven focus groups were conducted with a total of 62 participants. Transcripts were analyzed using the grounded theory approach. Two domains-togetherness and community acceptance-emerged as common to four types of communities that were most frequently men
