Poor air quality in a pig-confinement building may potentially place farmers at higher health risk than other workers for exposure to airborne pollutants that may reach infectious levels. The aim of this study was to assess worker exposure to fungi in indoor environments in Portuguese swine buildings. Air samples from 7 swine farms were collected at a flow rate of 140 L/min, at 1 m height, onto malt extract agar supplemented with chloramphenicol (MEA). Surfaces samples of the same indoor sites were obtained by swabbing the surfaces. Samples from the floor covering were also collected from four

Workplaces in which chemicals are used, should assess and be prepared for the risk of accidents due to the use of chemicals. The most common chemicals causing a risk of poisoning include various acids and bases, gases and vapors irritating the airways as well as systemically toxic gases and vapors such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide. Antidotes that can be given to the victim of poisoning at the workplace are available for a very limited number of industrial chemicals. First aid and treatment are therefore often symptomatic.

The purpose of this paper is to present the differences and similarities in the roles of occupational health nurses (OHNs) between the United States and Japan by reporting the results of interviews with seven OHNs who work at seven industries in the city and the suburbs of San Francisco. Four out of seven OHNs responded that one of their essential roles was "Case Manager", in regard to the prevention of work force reduction and the scaling back of workers' medical expenditures associated with work-related accidents. Only one of them responded that "Health Promotion Specialist" was the leading

Based on toxicology, metabolism, animal studies, and human studies, occupational exposure to chlorinated aliphatic solvents (methanes, ethanes, and ethenes) has been associated with numerous adverse health effects, including central nervous system, reproductive, liver, and kidney toxicity, and carcinogenicity. However, many of these solvents remain in active, large-volume use. This article reviews the recent occupational epidemiology literature on the most widely used solvents, methylene chloride, chloroform, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene, and discusses other chlorinated aliphatic

OBJECTIVES: To confirm that working with horses is an occupational respiratory hazard and observed associations are not attributable to confounding.
METHODS: A postal survey of the respiratory health of 659 horse trainers and a comparison group of 506 vegetable growers was conducted. Data were analysed using logistic regression.
RESULTS: Relative to vegetable growers, horse trainers reported higher rates of chronic bronchitis [odds ratio (OR) = 6.8, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2-21.4] and organic dust toxic syndrome/farmers' lung (ODTS/FL) (OR = 3.5, 95% CI: 1.8-6.8). Grinding oats, spre

The expression "indoor pollution" of residential, office and public buildings appeared for the first time in western societies toward the end of the '60s to indicate a complex phenomenon as important to public health as that of the "outdoor air pollution" or even more so. The demonstration of the toxic effects of passive smoking, radon, and other chemical and biological pollutants present in office and residential environments has prompted a wide spectrum of research into health risks, has led to position-taking by national and international authorities, and has given rise to a new scientific

The authors investigated the health effects of occupational exposures to vehicle emissions in 745 bus drivers, conductors, and taxi drivers, compared with 532 unexposed controls, in Shanghai. Logistic regression and general linear models were used to examine the relationship between exposure and respiratory illness. Results showed that the prevalences of some respiratory symptoms and chronic respiratory diseases were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the exposed group than in the controls. The adjusted odds ratios for throat pain, phlegm, chronic rhinitis, and chronic pharyngitis were 1.95 (9

The analysis of the epidemiological studies carried out in Italy give us the idea for a very precise survey of the occupational leptospirosis. We have identified the occupational hazards and the precautionary measures. In Italy the first epidemiological data about human leptospirosis goes back to 1917. During following decades were highlighted several occupational forms of leptospirosis, specifically seasonal epidemics among rice-workers. Epidemiological studies carried out in Italy from 1950 to 1990 showed that leptospirosis was again widespread although precautionary measures and there was a

1. About one in four adults in the United States has high blood pressure on the basis of a single evaluation. Hypertension is associated with an increased risk of developing coronary heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, renal insufficiency, and peripheral vascular disease. 2. Weight loss, reduced sodium intake, reduced alcohol consumption, and exercise have documented efficacy as interventions to decrease high blood pressure. A number of intervention programs in community based settings and in health care provider practice based settings have documented that behavioral change and r

The medical hazards of salmon farming can be grouped into those related to marine safety, fish husbandry, fish-farm diving and disease treatments. The hostile water environment requires thermal protection and personal buoyancy aids as workers frequently fall in the water from boats or cages. Feedstuffs may generate respirable dust and attract rats, creating a risk of leptospirosis. Musculo-skeletal injuries are common from lifting nets. Fish-farm diving has particular risks which can be minimized. Organophosphorous pesticides are used to treat sea lice and employees require health surveillance

A small group of persons in ambulatory care settings report multiple symptoms and recurrent distress and utilize a high percentage of resources. Often these high utilizers are requesting help with a psychosocial problem through their symptoms. The psychosocial reason for high utilization of services may be a major psychiatric problem such as a somatization disorder or a depression/anxiety disorder. Most often, however, the person is seeking help with family or work stresses or is in need of information and/or reassurance. A careful assessment by the occupational health nurse can lead to a dete

Health care workers are exposed to an array of physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial hazards. At a national conference in Seattle May 11-13, 1983, hospital occupational medicine programs were characterized as lagging far behind those in industries with comparable illness and injury rates. Participants and speakers recommended that health care workers be trained to recognize occupational hazards; that epidemiologic, laboratory, and clinical studies be undertaken to discern trends and establish the mechanisms of effects from hazardous exposures; and that adequate employee health and s

An Occupational Health Information System (OHIS), a data base management system for tracking occupational health, has been developed. A primary feature is its ability to correlate employee workplace environment with health. Hardware implementation of OHIS is on a minicomputer with application programs written in ANSI standard MUMPS language. OHIS integrates personnel, medical and industrial hygiene/toxicology information into one data base. The personnel module is comprised of demographic information collected and updated by the personnel department. The medical module utilizes an interactive
