Health Resource and Cost Savings Achieved in a Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic.

Background: Lung cancer (LC) care is resource and cost intensive. We launched a Multidisciplinary LC Clinic (MDC), where patients with a new LC diagnosis received concurrent oncology consultation, resulting in improved time to LC assessment and treatment. Here, we evaluate the impact of MDC on health resource utilization, patient and caregiver costs, and secondary patient benefits. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients in a rapid assessment clinic with a new LC diagnosis pre-MDC (September 2016-February 2017) and post-MDC implementation (February 2017-December 2018). Data are reported

Health care resource utilization and treatment of leptomeningeal carcinomatosis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The economic burden of cancer in the United States is substantial, and better understanding it is essential in informing health care policy and innovation. Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LC) represents a late complication of primary cancer spreading to the leptomeninges. METHODS: The IBM MarketScan Research databases were queried for adults diagnosed with LC from 2001 to 2015, secondary to 4 primary cancers (breast, lung, gastrointestinal, and melanoma). Health care resource utilization (HCRU) and treatment utilization were quantified at baseline (1-year pre-LC diagnosis) and 30,

Health Care Resource Utilization and Cost Before Initial Schizophrenia Diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The management of schizophrenia, a chronic, multifaceted mental health condition, is associated with considerable health care resource utilization (HCRU) and costs. Current evidence indicates that a high-risk and costly prodromal period, during which patients are likely symptomatic, precedes diagnosis. Better characterization and disease management during this stage could help to improve patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To describe and compare HCRU and costs for up to 5 years before diagnosis in a cohort with schizophrenia versus a demographically matched cohort without schizophrenia

Jail Mental Health Resourcing: A Conceptual and Empirical Study of Social Determinants.

U.S. county jails hold large populations of mentally ill inmates but have rarely been researched quantitatively to assess their collective capacity for providing mental health treatment. This research uses ordinal logit and a partial parallel slopes model and a large sample of U.S. counties to assess conceptualized links between local institutional and structural indicators and jail mental health resourcing. Strong church networks and high rates of adult education completion are associated with enhanced jail mental health resourcing. Urbanized areas and areas with deep economic ties to manufac

The women's health initiative: a potential resource for future studies of autoimmune diseases.

The women's health initiative observational and clinical trials cohort is one of the largest and most carefully characterized group of postmenopausal women who have undergone long-term follow-up. Although outcome assessment has focused on the outcomes of CVD, cancer, and fractures, a wealth of data have been collected, which could form the basis for researchers interested in autoimmune diseases to begin important studies. Baseline and follow-up blood samples and DNA samples are available upon application to the study's Design and Analysis Committee and publications can be planned based on the

Onchocerciasis control and elimination: coming of age in resource-constrained health systems.

During the past three decades, onchocerciasis control has been successful in reducing blindness and skin disease in Africa and the Americas. In this article, I review the control and elimination of Onchocerca volvulus as a public health problem. The success of onchocerciasis control has been the result of secure financing, generous drug donation, effective partnership between stakeholders, and focused operational and implementation research. The future challenges are to ensure sustainability of existing programmes and to increase the level of integration with other health interventions in reso

Proceedings from the Turner Resource Network symposium: the crossroads of health care research and health care delivery.

Turner syndrome, a congenital condition that affects ∼1/2,500 births, results from absence or structural alteration of the second sex chromosome. There has been substantial effort by numerous clinical and genetic research groups to delineate the clinical, pathophysiological, cytogenetic, and molecular features of this multisystem condition. Questions about the molecular-genetic and biological basis of many of the clinical features remain unanswered, and health care providers and families seek improved care for affected individuals. The inaugural "Turner Resource Network (TRN) Symposium" brough
