Does menopausal transition really influence mental health? Findings from the prospective long-term Zurich study.

In the prospective long-term Zurich study, we re-examined the hypothesized association between mental health problems in women and the transition through menopausal stages. One hundred sixty-eight women from a population-based Swiss community cohort were prospectively followed up from age 21 to 50. At age 50, the occurrence of hot flushes/night sweats and sleep disturbances was significantly more frequent in peri- and post-menopausal women. Irritability/nervousness was increased only in peri-menopausal women, but that association was accounted for by neuroticism trait scores at age 30. Transit

Educational differences in self-rated health during the Russian transition. Evidence from Taganrog 1993-1994.

In the beginning of 1992, in order to do away with the ruins of the old communist system once and for all, radical economic reforms--'shock therapy'--were introduced in Russia. However, there are winners and losers in the Russian transition from communism to market economy and democracy. The aim of the study is to investigate whether there are educational differences in self-rated health among the citizens of Taganrog in 1993-94. If there are indeed differences, the second aim is to investigate whether they can be explained by variations in specific social, economic and psychological circumsta

Association of uterine health in the first lactation with transition cow health and reproductive performance in the second lactation of Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of puerperal metritis (PM) diagnosed and treated during the early postpartum period of the first lactation on transition cow health, milk production, reproduction, and culling of dairy cows in their second lactation. Diagnosis of PM was based on fetid watery red-brown uterine discharge and rectal temperature above 39.5°C. Two farms were enrolled in this retrospective observational cohort study (farms A and B). In both farms, the following diseases were recorded during the first 30 DIM in lactation 1 and 2: clinical hypocalcemia (CH), reta

Stakeholders' perspectives on caregiver outcomes for health care transition for adolescents and young adults with special health care needs: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature has explored parent/caregiver perspectives and satisfaction with the health care transition (HCT) process for their adolescents and young adults with special health care needs (AYASHCN). Limited research has explored the opinion of health care providers and researchers on parent/caregiver outcomes associated with a successful HCT for AYASHCN. METHODS: A web-based survey was distributed through the international and interdisciplinary Health Care Transition Research Consortium listserv, which at the time of the survey was composed of 148 providers dedicated to op

Co-occurrence, stability and manifestation of child and adolescent mental health problems: a latent transition analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex constellations of socio-emotional and behavioural problems (i.e., mental health problems) in childhood and adolescence are common and heighten the risk for subsequent personality, anxiety and mood disorders in adulthood. Aims of this study included the examination of patterns of mental health problems (e.g., externalizing-internalizing co-occurrence) and their transitions to reported mental disorders by using a longitudinal person-centered approach (latent class and latent transition analysis). METHODS: The sample consisted of 1255 children and adolescents (51.7% female, m

Interpretation of reproductive hormones before, during and after the pubertal transition-Identifying health and disordered puberty.

Puberty is a process of transition from childhood to adult reproductive capacity, governed by the reactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis after a long period of dormancy in mid-childhood. As such, the reproductive hormones are in a state of flux during the adolescent years, and interpretation of both the onset of healthy, concordant puberty and the differentiation of precocious, delayed or disordered puberty, can be challenging. This review is focused on the description of the endocrine axes in healthy puberty and the markers of disorders of puberty that can aid diagnosis and m

Relationships between rumination time, metabolic conditions, and health status in dairy cows during the transition period.

The main objective of this experiment was to monitor the rumination pattern during the transition period in primiparous (PR) and pluriparous (PL) dairy cows and to investigate its relationships with metabolic conditions, milk yield, and health status. The study was carried out in an experimental free-stall barn and involved 32 Italian Friesian cows (9 PR and 23 PL) during the transition phase. The rumination time (RT) was recorded with an automatic system (HR-Tag), and data were calculated and summarized in 2-h intervals. Blood samples were collected during the transition phase to assess bioch

Health and psychosocial status of patients with turner syndrome after transition to adulthood: the Belgian experience.

BACKGROUND: Most girls with Turner syndrome (TS) are intensively followed by paediatricians, but are lost to follow-up when they reach adulthood. To gain insight into the adult medical and psychosocial situation, we performed a survey in young adult TS patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A questionnaire concerning current health status, education, occupation and living situation was sent to 160 young adult TS women, all treated during childhood with GH and oestrogen if needed. RESULTS: We received 102 completed questionnaires. Mean +/- SD age at reception of the questionnaire was 23.4 +/- 3.3 ye

Health Information Seeking by People Navigating Masculinizing Transition Pathways in Switzerland: Communication Inequalities and Adaptive Approaches.

Gender-diverse people considering transition pathways often navigate health information environments shaped by fragmented healthcare structures, uneven provider competence, and cisnormative health communication. This qualitative study explores how trans men and non-binary/agender people pursuing masculinizing transition pathways in Switzerland identify, evaluate, and use health information while navigating communication inequalities, institutional fragmentation, and cisnormative healthcare structures. Sixteen semi-structured interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis informed b

Political Transition, Health System Reform and Trust in Childhood Vaccination in Ukraine: A Qualitative Case Study.

Trust in childhood vaccination is a concern for health policy, particularly in settings of political transition and conflict, where governance, institutional legitimacy and service delivery are often under strain. It is against this backdrop that this study aims to describe evolving interactions between health system governance, trust and childhood vaccination in Ukraine across periods of reform and conflict, and the implications for health policy in fragile settings. Drawing on qualitative interviews with key informants and Ukrainian parents, findings show that trust in the health system, wit

Health Care Transition Experiences for Rural and Urban Autistic Adolescents and Young Adults: A Qualitative Analysis.

Health care transition (HCT) is underexplored among autistic adolescents and young adults (AYAs). We explored autistic AYAs' HCT experiences through virtual semi-structured interviews with 19 participants (mean age = 21.4 years; range = 15-25). Data were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis and interpreted through self-determination theory (SDT). Participants described HCT as marked by increased expectations for independent health care management without commensurate preparation, relational continuity, or structural support. Findings were organized around SDT domains of competence, auton

Inpatient to outpatient care transition interventions for adults with mental health conditions: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to provide an overview of the key characteristics of care transition interventions (CTIs) from inpatient to outpatient care for adults with mental health disorders. INTRODUCTION: Many patients with mental health disorders experience treatment discontinuation during the transition from inpatient to outpatient mental health care, which is associated with high rates of rehospitalization and/or suicidal behavior. CTIs provide low-threshold support to facilitate patients' access and adherence to outpatient treatment and, ultimately, decrease rehospitali

Health-illness transition processes in children with complex chronic conditions and their parents: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of complex chronic conditions (CCC), which cause serious limitations and require specialized care, is increasing. The diagnosis of a CCC is a health-illness transition for children and their parents, representing a long-term change leading to greater vulnerability. Knowing the characteristics of these transitional processes is important for promoting safe transitions in this population. This scoping review aimed to map the available evidence on health-illness transition processes in children with complex chronic conditions and their parents in the context of healthca

Healthcare transition from childhood to adulthood in pseudoxanthoma elasticum: Patient experience and recommendations for health practitioners.

PURPOSE: Health-care transition (HCT) is a necessary part of the care process for allsick adolescents, to allow their empowerment while limiting disruption to follow-up care. Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) runs the risk of losing patients to follow-up because young patients are predominantly asymptomatic. This can be detrimental as it can prevent primary prevention measures from being properly implemented. The purpose of this study was to assess satisfaction of PXE patients with their health-care transition and to identify the factors associated with its success, in order to improve care manag
