Racial and Rural Disparities in Financial Toxicity and Healthcare Transitions Among Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors in Kentucky: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors, especially racial/ethnic minorities and rural residents are particularly vulnerable to financial toxicity due to limited healthcare access, socioeconomic disparities, and cultural/language barriers. These social determinants of health compound financial hardship and contribute to poor healthcare transitions from pediatric to adult care, leading to worse outcomes and higher mortality rates. Methods: Our cross-sectional survey study examined racial (Black vs White) and geographic (rural vs urban) disparities in financial toxicity and heal

Ovarian Cancer Epidemiology, Healthcare Access and Disparities (ORCHiD): methodology for a population-based study of black, Hispanic and white patients with ovarian cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Less than 40% of patients with ovarian cancer (OC) in the USA receive stage-appropriate guideline-adherent surgery and chemotherapy. Black patients with cancer report greater depression, pain and fatigue than white patients. Lack of access to healthcare likely contributes to low treatment rates and racial differences in outcomes. The Ovarian Cancer Epidemiology, Healthcare Access and Disparities study aims to characterise healthcare access (HCA) across five specific dimensions-Availability, Affordability, Accessibility, Accommodation and Acceptability-among black, Hispanic and wh

Arterial Embolectomy in the Brazilian Unified Health System: Temporal Trends, In-Hospital Mortality and Healthcare Disparities in a Time-Series Study (2016-2025).

INTRODUCTION: Acute Arterial Occlusions are vascular emergencies associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. In Brazil, the role of arterial embolectomy within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) remains incompletely characterized, particularly in the context of the expansion of endovascular therapies and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This ecological time-series study used secondary data from the Hospital Information System (SIH-SUS), including hospitalizations for arterial embolism and thrombosis (ICD-10: I74.*) between 2016 and 2025. Arterial embolectomies wer

Gender disparities in disability persist while healthcare access shows no net improvement in South Africa: a general household survey trend analysis, 2020-2024.

OBJECTIVES: To examine trends in disability prevalence by sex and province in South Africa between 2020 and 2024, and to test whether the reported gender gap and changes in healthcare access indicators are consistent with genuine population characteristics rather than sampling variation. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional trend analysis was conducted using five consecutive General Household Survey (GHS) statistical releases (2020-2024). Disability was measured using the Washington Group Short Set. Because the releases report population counts alongside percentages, two-proportion z-tests

Urban-rural disparities in maternal healthcare knowledge, attitudes, and practices among women with a recent live birth in Abuja and Gombe states, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Nigeria bears the highest burden of maternal mortality globally, with marked urban-rural disparities. Rural women have significantly lower uptake of skilled antenatal care (60.7% vs. 91.8%) and facility-based delivery (48.5% vs. 81.3%). However, comparative data on maternal knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) remain limited in northern Nigeria. This study compared maternal healthcare KAP between urban and rural women and identified predictors of good outcomes. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Abuja (urban) and Gombe State (rural) from June to

Who is protected and who is not? Evaluating the effects of the long-term care insurance system and disparities in healthcare utilization and costs of the South Korean elderly population.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing global interest in investigating the substitutability between long-term care service (LTCS) and medical care use, particularly in countries where elderly medical care use is rapidly increasing. The use of an appropriate LTCS can reduce unnecessary medical utilization and the resulting costs such as those for hospital admission, delayed discharge, and emergency room visits. METHODS: This study evaluated whether the LTCS has a savings effect on medical use for older adults and whether the effect varies depending on income level, using longitudinal data obtained fr

The role of vaccination, underlying health conditions, and working in healthcare in the socioeconomic disparities in COVID-19 hospitalization: a mediation analysis using interventional effect models.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has established an association between socioeconomic determinants and COVID-19 hospitalization rates. This study explores the potential mediation of this association by vaccination status, underlying health conditions, and working in healthcare. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including 111,159 and 337,232 adults living in the Walloon or Brussels regions in Belgium with a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection during the Delta-predominant period (1 September 2021 to 22 December 2021) and the Omicron-predominant period (4 January 2022 to 1 September 2022),

Medical student preparedness to address healthcare disparities among individuals with disabilities: An analysis of the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance Survey 2020.

BACKGROUND: Nearly one in four Americans live with a disability, yet healthcare systems often fail to adequately meet the needs of this population, resulting in significant health disparities. The disparities faced by people with disabilities (PWD) can be attributed to a lack of education for medical professionals at all levels. OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study investigates medical students' exposure to disability-related content and their self-perceived preparedness to care for PWD. METHODS: Using data from the 2020 Council of Academic Family Medicine's Educational Research Alliance (CERA)

Impact of standardized immunophenotyping and MRD monitoring on early mortality reduction in childhood leukemia: a step towards addressing healthcare disparities in vulnerable populations from Southern Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Despite high cure rates for pediatric B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in high-income countries, early mortality remains unacceptably high in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), largely due to limited access to risk-adapted therapy and response monitoring. Southern Mexico, a region marked by socioeconomic vulnerability, is emblematic of this disparity. In 2022 the Childhood Cancer Cytomics Laboratory (CCCL) started the implementation of standardized protocols for immunophenotyping and measurable residual disease (MRD) monitoring of B-ALL patients from this region.

Social Vulnerabilities and Spatial Access to Primary Healthcare through Car and Public Transportation System in the Albuquerque, NM, Metropolitan Area: Assessing Disparities through GIS and Multilevel Modeling.

Primary healthcare (PHC) is a keystone component of population health. However, inequities in public transportation access hinder equitable usage of PHC services by minoritized populations. Using the multimodal enhanced 2-step floating catchment area method and data in 2018 and 2019 for spatial access to PHC providers (n = 1166) and social vulnerability markers through census block (n = 543) and tract data (n = 226), a generalized linear mixed-effect model (GLMEM) was constructed to test the effects of sociodemographic and community area correlates on both car and bus transit spatial access to

A multiscale geospatial analysis integrating explainable machine learning to characterize spatial disparities in melanoma mortality associated with environmental justice and healthcare access in the contiguous United States.

BACKGROUND: Melanoma mortality exhibits profound geographical disparities associated with complex sociodemographic, environmental, and healthcare factors. Traditional spatial models may not fully capture the multi-scale heterogeneity underlying these geographic disparities. This study aimed to characterize the spatial heterogeneity and operational scales of factors associated with county-level melanoma mortality across the United States. METHODS: We conducted a county-level ecological study across the contiguous US (2018-2024). To address mortality data suppression by the Centers for Disease

Disparities in COVID-19 Vaccination Coverage Among Health Care Personnel Working in Long-Term Care Facilities, by Job Category, National Healthcare Safety Network - United States, March 2021.

Residents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and health care personnel (HCP) working in these facilities are at high risk for COVID-19-associated mortality. As of March 2021, deaths among LTCF residents and HCP have accounted for almost one third (approximately 182,000) of COVID-19-associated deaths in the United States (1). Accordingly, LTCF residents and HCP were prioritized for early receipt of COVID-19 vaccination and were targeted for on-site vaccination through the federal Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program (2). In December 2020, CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (N

Disparities in Healthcare Services Efficiency and Patient-Provider Communication Quality Among Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Patients in the U.S.: A Multi-Year Cross-Sectional Analysis (2017-2020).

The marginalization of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) group arises from barriers at multiple levels of the socio-ecological matrix. This is primarily reflected in challenges related to effective healthcare services delivery and high-quality patient-provider communication. Utilizing national data from the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) from 2017 to 2020, we examined the difference between D/HH adults and hearing-abled adults in terms of healthcare services efficiency, patient-provider communication quality, health self-efficacy, and psychological health. The findings rev
