Kidney Diseases in Agricultural Communities: A Case Against Heat-Stress Nephropathy.

The beginning of the 21st century has seen the emergence of a new chronic tubulo-interstitial kidney disease of uncertain cause among agricultural communities in Central America and Sri Lanka. Despite many similarities in demography, presentation, clinical features, and renal histopathology in affected individuals in these regions, a toxic etiology has been considered mainly in Sri Lanka, whereas the predominant hypothesis in Central America has been that recurrent acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by heat stress leads to chronic kidney disease (CKD). This is termed the heat stress/dehydration

Determinants of epoxy allergy in the construction industry: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Workers exposed to epoxy products are at risk of developing allergic contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To compare workers throughout the German construction industry with and without skin allergy to epoxy resins, hardeners, and/or reactive diluents, and to investigate which determinants are related to the development of epoxy allergy. METHODS: A questionnaire was completed by 179 epoxy allergy cases, and 151 epoxy workers as controls. Crude and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated by the use of backwards stepwise logistic regression analysis.

Improving access to psychosocial interventions for perinatal depression in low- and middle-income countries: lessons from the field.

Over 90% women with perinatal depression in low and middle-income countries do not receive treatment. Scale-up of evidence-based psychosocial interventions is a key challenge. We developed the Thinking Healthy Programme (THP), a psychosocial intervention that can be delivered by non-specialist providers such as community health workers in primary and secondary care settings. Our research showed that three out of 4 women with perinatal depression who received the programme recovered, and there were beneficial effects on infant outcomes. In over a decade since the original research, policy and p

Beyond medications: A study on competencies of self-care practices among type 2 diabetic patients and diabetes health education among ASHA workers.

BACKGROUND: Self-care behaviours like healthy eating, being active, taking medication, monitoring blood sugar levels, reducing risk, problem-solving and healthy coping are the mainstay for the control of diabetes and the prevention of its complications. Despite the proven benefits of self-care practices, studies indicate poor adherence to such practices, especially in rural India. OBJECTIVES: (1) To assess the self-care practices among diabetic patients using the 'Diabetes Self-Management Profile' (DSMP) questionnaire, (2) to explore the factors influencing their self-care practices, (3) to e

Respiratory Health among Pesticide Sprayers at Flower Farms in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Pesticide use in Ethiopia has become a common practice in which large-scale flower farms are the main consumers. Workers on flower farms might be exposed to pesticides while spraying or while performing other tasks related to pesticide use and management. It is unclear whether working as a flower farm sprayer is associated with respiratory health problems. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare respiratory symptoms and lung function indices between pesticide sprayers and non-spraying workers. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 15 flower farms, involvi

Effectiveness of Workplace-Based Diet and Lifestyle Interventions on Risk Factors in Workers with Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression.

Workplace health interventions are essential to improve the health and well-being of workers and promote healthy lifestyle behaviours. We carried out a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of articles measuring the association between workplace dietary interventions and MetS risk. We recovered potentially eligible studies by searching MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science, using the terms "Metabolic syndrome" and "Occupational Health". A total of 311 references were retrieved and 13 documents were selected after applying the inclusion and exclusion cr

Gender, education, and digital generations as determinants of attitudes toward health information for health workers in West Java, Indonesia.

Health information is a commodity heavily sought by Indonesians because of the increasing consciousness of a healthy lifestyle. However, the circulation of health information is consistently disrupted by misinformation and disinformation, particularly on social media and chatting platforms such as WhatsApp. Identified misinformation and disinformation can be found on the official web page run by the Ministry of Communication and Information (https://trustpositif.kominfo.go.id/). Digital information exchange often involves health care workers; they are considered a credible source of health inf

The impact of shift work induced chronic circadian disruption on IL-6 and TNF-alpha immune responses.

AIM: Sleep disturbances induce proinflammatory immune responses, which might increase cardiovascular disease risk. So far the effects of acute sleep deprivation and chronic sleep illnesses on the immune system have been investigated. The particular impact of shift work induced chronic circadian disruption on specific immune responses has not been addressed so far. METHODS: Pittsburgh-Sleep-Quality-Index (PSQI) questionnaire and blood sampling was performed by 225 shift workers and 137 daytime workers. As possible markers the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-alpha and lymphocyte cell cou

Combined Infection Control Interventions Protect Essential Food Workers from Occupational Exposures to SARS-CoV-2 in the Agricultural Environment.

Essential food workers experience elevated risks of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection due to prolonged occupational exposures in food production and processing areas, shared transportation (car or bus), and employer-provided shared housing. Our goal was to quantify the daily cumulative risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection for healthy susceptible produce workers and to evaluate the relative reduction in risk attributable to food industry interventions and vaccination. We simulated daily SARS-CoV-2 exposures of indoor and outdoor produce workers through six linked qu

SHIFTPLAN: a randomized controlled trial investigating the effects of a multimodal shift-work intervention on drivers' fatigue, sleep, health, and performance parameters.

BACKGROUND: Shift work is commonly associated with health problems resulting from circadian misalignment and sleep restriction. About one in three shift workers is affected by insomnia and up to 90% report regular fatigue and/or sleepiness at the workplace. Epidemiological data shows that shift workers are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, breast cancer, mental-health problems, and shift-work disorder, which conditions typically lead to reduced work performance, processing errors, accidents at work, absenteeism, and reduced quality of life. Given these widespread

Trait emotional intelligence, coping, and occupational distress among resettlement workers.

OBJECTIVE: Trait emotional intelligence has recently emerged as a negative predictor of work-related distress. However, research that considers the mechanisms underlying the relationship between trait emotional intelligence and distress is lacking, in particular among workers with emotionally intensive occupations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the mediating pathway of coping behaviors in the relations between trait emotional intelligence, and work-related distress outcomes, namely secondary traumatic stress and job burnout in a sample of refugee resettlement workers. METHOD: Parti

Health status of petrochemical workers: a narrative review.

Professional exposure to benzene has been extensively investigated by occupational medicine, leading to strict regulation of exposure threshold values. However, the petrochemical industry utilizes many chemical substances, whose exposure, without effective control and mitigation actions, could influence the health status over time. The aim of this narrative review is to describe health status of petrochemical workers related to occupational exposures, inquiring literature from 1980 to present. We used the PubMed and Web of Science search engines. As regards non-neoplastic diseases, despite het

Shift work is associated with selective brain volume loss: a longitudinal study.

INTRODUCTION: Global work patterns are changing, with more individuals engaged in shift work and remaining in the workforce later in life. Shift work is linked to disrupted sleep, impaired cognition, and greater risk of metabolic and neurodegenerative disease; effects that are amplified by aging. However, the neural correlates of shift work remain poorly characterized, leaving a critical gap in understanding how occupational schedules may shape the aging brain. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the relationship between shift work on brain structure in healthy adults, and how brain structure c

Mortality among Fukushima nuclear emergency workers, 2012-2021.

OBJECTIVES: The 2011 Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident involved approximately 20 000 emergency workers. Given the scale and nature of the accident, concerns have been raised regarding the long-term health of the emergency workers. This study presents the first 10 year overview of mortality among these workers. METHODS: We analysed the mortality data for 19 358 male emergency workers (mean age in 2012: 45.5 years; SD: 11.3) from 2012 to 2021. Mortality data were monitored through linkage to national vital statistics, including the dates and causes of death. Standardised mortality

Silica-associated lung disease in developing countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: There is a considerable burden of silica-associated lung diseases in the developing world. This review summarizes the epidemiology of these diseases, especially silicosis and silico-tuberculosis, mitigative efforts and treatment, especially in the context of developing countries. RECENT FINDINGS: In 2017, the highest incidence of silicosis was in China, India and Brazil among the developing countries. The prevalence of silicosis amongst exposed workers may vary from 4 to 55%; there is a risk of underestimation because of the 'healthy worker effect'. The permissible exposure

Mortality among Fire Department of the City of New York Rescue and Recovery Workers Exposed to the World Trade Center Disaster, 2001-2017.

The World Trade Center (WTC) attacks on 9/11/2001 have consistently been associated with elevated rates of physical and mental health morbidities, while evidence about mortality has been limited. We examined mortality between 9/12/2001 and 12/31/2017 among 15,431 WTC-exposed Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) firefighters and emergency medical service providers (EMS), specifically assessing associations between intensity of WTC-exposure and mortality risk. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) compared FDNY cohort mortality with the US general popula

Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers: an analysis of patch test data from the Danish contact dermatitis group, 2002-2011.

BACKGROUND: Occupational contact dermatitis among hairdressers is frequent, owing to daily exposure to irritants and allergens. OBJECTIVES: To identify sensitization to the most common allergens associated with the occupation of hairdressing. METHODS: Patch test results of 399 hairdressers and 1995 matched controls with contact dermatitis, registered by the Danish Contact Dermatitis Group between January 2002 and December 2011, were analysed. All patients were patch tested with the European baseline series, and hairdressers were additionally tested with the hairdressing series. RESULTS: Occ

Motion - colonoscopic surveillance is more cost effective than colectomy in patients with ulcerative colitis: arguments against the motion.

There are insufficient data upon which to base recommendations about surveillance colonoscopy and prophylactic colectomy for the prevention of colorectal cancer in patients with ulcerative colitis. Case series, analyses of intermediate results and extrapolations from other patient groups do not constitute reliable evidence. Available studies are susceptible to several biases: the 'healthy worker' effect, surveillance bias and selection bias. Patients who are enrolled in surveillance programs are more likely to be thoroughly evaluated beforehand, are more likely to be given a diagnosis of dyspl

[Education of the workers and their participation in occupational health programs].

In addition to being exposed to the variables and factors that affect the health of the entire population, workers are vulnerable to other risk factors of a biological, chemical, physical, psychosocial and biotechnological nature. These factors cause work-related accidents and occupational and other work-related diseases. Biological factors may be present at workplaces and can spread rapidly in a dense population such as that of an industrial community. Chemical factors can cause acute intoxication and chronic and prepathological conditions, and physical factors include vibrations and ionizing
