Spatial Hearing in Individuals With Unilateral Peripheral Vestibular Disorders: An Exploratory Study.

PURPOSE: This preliminary study aimed to examine spatial auditory perception and selected cognitive functions in individuals with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders and clinically normal hearing. METHOD: Fifteen individuals with unilateral peripheral vestibular disorders and 18 age-matched healthy controls underwent audiological and cognitive assessments. Spatial hearing was evaluated, and cognitive performance was assessed to account for its potential influence on spatial hearing. RESULTS: Exploratory analyses showed poorer spatial hearing performance in the vestibular group than in

Association between age-related hearing loss and gait disorders in older fallers.

INTRODUCTION: Falls are associated with hearing loss, which might be explained by the onset of gait disorders. The objective of this study was to examine the association between Age-Related Hearing Loss (ARHL) and gait disorders assessed with GAITrite® walkway in a population of fallers aged 75 and over while accounting for the vestibular function. METHODS: We examined data from 53 older patients (mean 84.2 ± 5.1 years; 64% women) included after a GAITrite® walkway assessment together with hearing and vestibular tests. People with high-frequency hearing loss, higher than 10% of the age and se

[Molecular biological aspects of neuroplasticity: approaches for treating tinnitus and hearing disorders].

Peripheral and central structures are involved in the onset of tinnitus. Neuronal plasticity is of special importance for the occurrence of central tinnitus and its persistent form. Neuronal plasticity is the ability of the brain to adapt its own structure (synapses, nerve cells, or even whole areas of the brain) and its organization to modified biological requirements. Neuroplasticity is an ongoing dynamic process. Generally speaking, there are two types of plasticity: synaptic and cortical. Cortical plasticity involves activity-dependent changes in size, connectivity, or in the activation pa

[Diagnosis of hearing disorders in children with early evoked auditory brainstem potentials].

INTRODUCTION: Early Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA) is a modern noninvasive, objective neurophysiological method for evaluation of hearing threshold. This method is applied in the complex otoneurological diagnostic procedure. The aim of the complete functional diagnostic procedure of hearing impairment in children is to determine the hearing level for the purpose of an early, adequate and quality hearing stimulation which affects the morphophysiological development of the complex auditory system. There are programs for early detection of the hearing impairment which give high-risk

[Prevalence and diagnostic aspects of balance disorders in children with hearing impairment].

BACKGROUND: Children with hearing impairment are at an increased risk of vestibular disorders. Due to the diagnostic challenges associated with pediatric populations, corresponding assessments are rarely performed, resulting in a lack of prevalence data in Germany. The findings, however, could have significant implications for subsequent diagnostic processes, therapeutic interventions, and preventive measures. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the feasibility of balance diagnostics for children of all age groups and emphasizes the necessity of their routine application in children with heari

Hearing disorders - findings on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging: pictorial essay.

Hearing disorders are usually unilateral and are more common in women. They can be congenital or acquired, and hearing loss is categorized as sensorineural, conductive, or mixed. The onset of hearing loss can be progressive or sudden, and it is a common reason for seeking medical attention. In this context, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have assumed critical roles in the search for an etiological diagnosis and in guiding the therapeutic approach. In this pictorial essay, we illustrate the common causes of hearing loss, discussing the possible differential diagnoses and hig

Human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immune deficiency syndrome AIDS-related hearing disorders.

After a brief discussion of the nature of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) disease process and its consequences, the article considers implications for the ear and hearing. One of the newest etiologic considerations for audiologists is pediatric autoimmune deficiency syndrome (PAIDS). Babies born to HIV-AIDS-positive mothers, and children who have acquired the disease, represent a new challenge to clinics. Symptoms, audiologic care, and management are considered.

Hearing disorders in children with fetal alcohol syndrome: findings from case reports.

Fourteen children with the fetal alcohol syndrome were evaluated by standard audiologic procedures. Thirteen of the 14 children had childhood histories of hearing disorders. All 13 of these children (93%) had clinically significant histories of bilateral recurrent serous otitis media (ie, they were otitis prone), and at least four children (29%) had bilateral sensorineural hearing losses in addition to being otitis prone. Many of the children with recurrent serous otitis media required repeated myringotomies with placement of ventilation tubes, and those with sensorineural hearing losses requi

[Time resolution ability of the ear in presbycusis and sensorineural hearing disorders].

In psychoacoustical and electrophysiological experiments the time resolution ability in monaural and binaural hearing was investigated for defined signal parameters. The binaural stimulation is characterized by signals of different structure (dichotic stimulation). With regard to different functional changes in the peripheral and central areas of the hearing organ caused by presbycusis, these investigations confirm that there are similar changes in time resolution processes which may influence speech discrimination in presbycusis to a high degree. In patients with sensorineural hearing loss ti

Hearing and Balance Disorders in the State of Hawai'i: Demographics and Demand for Services.

Hearing and balance disorders affect people of all ages. Among children, hearing loss affects speech and language development, academic performance, and psychosocial development. Hearing loss in adults negatively impacts work productivity, cognitive function, and psychosocial status. Prevalence of hearing loss in children in Hawai'i is higher than the national average. Research indicates that hearing loss is a prevalent condition among veterans and advanced age adults. This is of particular concern in Hawai'i as the state is home to many military training facilities and has a large elderly pop

Epidemiology and etiology of acquired hearing disorders in childhood in the Cologne area.

Because of their serious consequences for all aspects of development, severe hearing disorders in children are an important clinical entity. A better understanding of the epidemiology and etiology of acquired hearing disorders may potentially lead to more effective prevention. Marked differences in the epidemiology of acquired hearing disorders are reported in the literature. In order to illuminate the problem of acquired disorders and to define current etiological causes with special regard to ethnological factors in the Cologne area, we started a retrospective study. A total of 314 children
