Increasing shade area in feedlot heifers during heat stress: physiological and performance parameters.

Heat stress is a great challenge for feedlot operations established in arid zones. The aim of this study was to evaluate if increasing shade area in the pen improved physiological and productive variables in feedlot heifers under hot climate. A total of 510 European and Zebu heifers were randomly assigned to six pens which were divided in two treatments: (1) three pens with 100 heifers each with a shade area of 2.7 m2/head (control group [C]); and (2) three pens with 70 heifers each with a shade area of 3.7 m2/head (treated group [T]). Physiological variables respiratory frequency (RF) and bod

Environmental heat stress on maternal physiology and fetal blood flow in pregnant subsistence farmers in The Gambia, west Africa: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic climate change has caused extreme temperatures worldwide, with data showing that sub-Saharan Africa is especially vulnerable to these changes. In sub-Saharan Africa, women comprise 50% of the agricultural workforce, often working throughout pregnancy despite heat exposure increasing the risk of adverse birth outcomes. In this study, we aimed to improve understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms responsible for the adverse health outcomes resulting from environmental heat stress in pregnant subsistence farmers. We also aimed to provide data to establish whether

Thermodynamic assessment of heat stress in dairy cattle: lessons from human biometeorology.

A versatile meteorological index for predicting heat stress in dairy cattle remains elusive. Despite numerous attempts at developing such indices and widespread use of some, there is growing skepticism about the accuracy and adequacy of the existing indices as well as the general statistical approach used to develop them. At the same time, precision farming of high-yielding animals in a drastically changing climate calls for more effective prediction and alleviation of heat stress. The present paper revisits classical work on human biometeorology, particularly the apparent temperature scale, t

Changes in the pattern of heat waves and the impacts on Holstein cows in a subtropical region.

This study aimed to evaluate the change in the air temperature and the impacts of heat waves using Climate Change Indexes on the physiological and productive responses of lactating Holstein cows. Daily data of maximum and minimum air temperature for 1981-2021 were used. Heat waves were determined using six Climate Change Indexes. Individual data on respiratory rate, rectal temperature, and milk yield were collected in the summers of 2018, 2019, and 2021. The temperature trend analysis showed a significant (p < 0.0001) increase in maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and days in a heat wav

Cooling is the predominant strategy to alleviate the effects of heat stress on dairy cows.

Reduced reproductive performance of lactating cows during the summer is associated mainly with intensive genetic selection for high milk production, which places a great load on the thermoregulatory mechanism. In the last decades, a big effort has been made to explore the mechanism by which heat stress compromises fertility. The data gained so far revealed that the effect of thermal stress on the female reproductive tract is multifactorial in nature. Based on this understanding, new strategies to mitigate the effect of heat stress have been developed. The review summarizes some of the physiolo

BACKGROUND: Epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) is a mechanobullous skin fragility disease characterized by cytolysis of basal keratinocytes and intraepidermal blistering often caused by mutations in keratin genes (KRT5 or KRT14). No remedies exist for these disorders presenting a need for development of novel therapies. OBJECTIVES: To identify new genotype-phenotype relationships in vivo and in cultured primary EBS keratinocytes in vitro, and to study the cytoskeletal stabilizing effects of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in heat-stressed EBS cells. METHODS: Genomic DNA and cDNA samples from

Heat-related illness in athletes.

Heat stroke in athletes is entirely preventable. Exertional heat illness is generally the result of increased heat production and impaired dissipation of heat. It should be treated aggressively to avoid life-threatening complications. The continuum of heat illness includes mild disease (heat edema, heat rash, heat cramps, heat syncope), heat exhaustion, and the most severe form, potentially life-threatening heat stroke. Heat exhaustion typically presents with dizziness, malaise, nausea, and vomiting, or excessive fatigue with accompanying mild temperature elevations. The condition can progress

Intrinsically Disordered Proteins as Important Players during Desiccation Stress of Soybean Radicles.

Intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) play a variety of important physiological roles in all living organisms. However, there is no comprehensive analysis of the abundance of IDPs associated with environmental stress in plants. Here, we show that a set of heat-stable proteins (i.e., proteins that do not denature after boiling at 100 °C for 10 min) was present in R0mm and R15mm radicles (i.e., before radicle emergence and 15 mm long radicles) of soybean (Glycine max) seeds. This set of 795 iTRAQ-quantified heat-stable proteins contained a high proportion of wholly or highly disordered protei

Onset of heat stress and effects of warm temperature on daily milk yield in Swedish dairy cattle.

Climate change is associated with increases in the frequency, intensity, and duration of heat events, exposing even temperate regions to prolonged warm periods that can induce heat stress in dairy cattle, affecting milk production. This observational study investigated how warm weather affects milk yield in Nordic dairy cattle breeds kept under Swedish conditions. Deviations from the target lactation curve were analyzed to identify the onset of heat stress and predictors of sensitivity to heat stress using daily milk records from milking robots. The target curve was defined as the cow-specific

Extreme Heat and Emergency Health Impacts in the US (2018-2025).

Future climate projections suggest an increase in heat-related mortality and a decrease in cold-related deaths under warming scenarios. Understanding the health impacts of extreme heat, and their implications for healthcare demand is essential for assessing the future burden of climate-related illnesses. In this study, we examined the relationship between extreme heat events and Emergency Department Visits (EDV) for heat-related illnesses (HRIs) across the United States from 2018 to 2025. Using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Heat and Health Tracker and other rel

Effects of dietary supplementation with L-arginine on the endogenous losses of amino acids in growing pigs exposed to heat stress.

Exposing pigs to heat stress (HS) provokes higher death of intestinal cells, resulting in elevated endogenous intestinal losses (EIL) of amino acids (AA) and damage to intestinal epithelia. Arginine (Arg) is precursor for the synthesis of polyamines, which are involved in proliferation of intestinal cells and restoration of the intestinal epithelia. Thus the effect of adding L-Arg to diets for HS pigs on the EIL of AA was analyzed. Twelve pigs (23.1 ± 1.1 kg body weight) implanted with T-type cannulas at the end of ileum were individually housed and allowed 15-days for surgery recovery under t

The influence of air humidity on human heat stress in a hot environment.

This article aims to present the physical adaptation capabilities of a human, seen as a response to extreme hot and dry or hot and humid conditions. Adaptation capabilities are expressed as safe exposure time in two variants: at rest and during physical activity. The study shows the results of calculations of the variability over time of the core temperature and skin temperature as well as heat balance. Calculations were made according to Standard No. EN ISO 7933:2005 on the basis of assumed and actual meteorological data. The results of the calculations show that in these conditions a hot but

Life-threatening heat-related illness with severe hyponatremia in an aluminum smelter worker.

Heat stress is a recognized occupational hazard in aluminum smelter pot rooms. This is the report of an unusual and complex case of heat-related illness in an aluminum smelter worker. The 34-year-old male US worker developed life-threatening heat-related illness in August 2018, on his first day back at work after a 7-day absence. The worker initially presented with bilateral hand then all-extremity cramping followed some hours later by a generalized seizure and acute mental status changes, including combativeness. Emergency room evaluation identified a serum sodium level of 114 mmol/L. Acute l

Thymol supplementation effects on adrenocortical, immune and biochemical variables recovery in Japanese quail after exposure to chronic heat stress.

Chronic heat stress (CHS) exposure negatively impairs avian' immunoneuroendocrine interplay. Thymol has shown several bioactive properties including antioxidant, bactericidal, antifungal and gamma-aminobutyric acid modulator activities. Indeed, supplementation with thymol has been used with positive effects on poultry production and immune-related variables. This study evaluates whether a thymol dietary supplementation can be used as a new functional feed strategy to mitigate CHS deleterious effects on endocrine, biochemical and immune-related variables.
