Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia: Resolution of Bleeding and Stabilization of Hematocrit Following Orthotopic Liver Transplantation.

Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia (GAVE) is an uncommon cause of chronic gastrointestinal bleeding and iron deficiency anemia in the geriatric population. It is often associated with cirrhosis of the liver and is hypothesized to result from synthetic liver dysfunction. Treatment options include argon plasma coagulation, endoscopic band ligation, and radiofrequency ablation. An orthotopic liver transplant may be effective for patients with advanced liver disease. In this case report, we describe a 60-year-old woman with a history of cirrhosis secondary to nonalcohol-related steatohepatitis (NASH)

Intraoperative nadir hematocrit as a poor outcome predictor after acute type A aortic dissection surgey.

Acute type A aortic dissection is a life-threatening disease associated with high morbidity and mortality that requires urgent surgical intervention. Hemodilution is inevitable in cardiac operations performed with cardiopulmonary bypass, which leads to nadir hematocrit levels. Studies have shown that nadir hematocrit levels are associated with poor postoperative outcomes. The management strategy of intraoperative anemia in these operations is still controversial. Should we follow the patients with intraoperative low hematocrit values or should we transfuse them? In addition to intraoperative n

Fully automated correction for the hematocrit bias of non-volumetric dried blood spot phosphatidylethanol analysis.

The quantitative analysis of substances in dried blood spots (DBS) has gained vast popularity in the past decade. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) also recently committed to implementing DBS. Currently, DBS sampling mainly has focused on various volumetric sampling devices such as Hemaxis, Capitainer, and Mitra. These devices are designed to collect a specific sample volume, independent of the hematocrit (HCT), to enable quantitative DBS analysis. Here, we present an automated solution that makes the necessity of volumetric sampling for quantitative DBS analysis obsolete. Combining automate

Randomized trial of hematocrit 25% versus 35% during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass in infant heart surgery.

OBJECTIVES: We previously reported that postoperative hemodynamics and developmental outcomes were better among infants randomized to a higher hematocrit value during hypothermic cardiopulmonary bypass. However, worse outcomes were concentrated in patients with hematocrit values of 20% or below, and the benefits of hematocrit values higher than 25% were uncertain. METHODS: We compared perioperative hemodynamics and, at 1 year, developmental outcome and brain magnetic resonance imaging in a single-center, randomized trial of hemodilution to a hematocrit value of 25% versus 35% during hypotherm

A standard, noninvasive monitoring of hematocrit algorithm improves blood pressure control in pediatric hemodialysis patients.

Accurate dry weight assessment is difficult in pediatric hemodialysis patients but is essential to prevent chronic fluid overload, hypertension, and cardiovascular morbidity. A noninvasive monitoring (NIVM) of hematocrit-guided ultrafiltration algorithm was studied prospectively in 20 pediatric hemodialysis patients. The algorithm targeted the first 50% of total goal ultrafiltration to be removed during the first hour of dialysis with a maximum blood volume change of 8 to 12% per hour. The second 50% was removed during the remaining treatment time with a maximum blood volume change of 5% per h

Selective cerebral hematocrit decrease in the centrum semiovale after carotid artery occlusion: a PET study.

The centrum semiovale may be susceptible to hypoperfusion as a result of carotid artery occlusion. Recent studies suggest that the cerebral hematocrit decreases with diminished cerebral perfusion pressure. To investigate whether the effect of carotid artery occlusion on the hematocrit in the centrum semiovale is different from that in the cerebral cortex, seven patients with unilateral carotid artery occlusion were studied with positron emission tomography. The distributions of the red blood cell and plasma volumes were assessed using carbon monoxide labeled with oxygen 15 and human serum albu

Hemoglobin S and C traits: contributing causes for decreased mean hematocrit in African-American children.

Several nutritional surveys have shown that African-American children have lower mean hematocrit and hemoglobin values than white children. While the high prevalence of both alpha and beta thalassemias in African-American children can partly account for the lower hematologic values, the remaining differences cannot be explained. African-American individuals have a high prevalence of traits for hemoglobin S (HbAS) and hemoglobin C (HbAC). The mean hematocrit of children with normal hemoglobin AA (HbAA) (n = 15637) was compared with that of children with traits for HbAS (n = 1197) and HbAC (n =

Estimation of plasma volume from hematocrit and plasma oncotic pressure during volume expansion in dogs.

Changes in hematocrit and plasma oncotic pressure were measured continuously during and after isotonic volume expansion in splenectomized dogs in order to test the potential of these types of measurements to predict changes in plasma volume. A volume of Ringer's solution amounting to 15% of the initial blood volume was infused over 10 min. At the end of the infusion, 54% of infused fluid remained within the intravascular space and 9% of the infused volume was retained within the intravascular space at 50 min after the end of the infusion. Hematocrit and plasma oncotic pressure decreased by 2.4

Fabrication of photoresist SU-8 pyrolyzed carbon electrodes and their integration in a microfluidic hematocrit detection system.

Carbon microelectrodes are attractive for microfluidic biosensing due to their wide potential window, low overpotentials, chemical stability, and compatibility with low-cost microfabrication. Pyrolysis of photopatterned SU-8 offers a scalable route to carbon electrode fabrication; however, conventional two-step pyrolysis often leads to adhesion issues, geometric distortion, and limited surface area in low-aspect-ratio planar designs. These constraints restrict performance and broader adoption in analytical microdevices. Hematocrit determination, a clinically essential diagnostic measurement, r

Risk analysis of the association between lactate-to-hematocrit ratio and poor prognosis in critical patients with cirrhosis.

Liver cirrhosis contributes substantially to global health and causes high mortality in critically ill patients. While the lactate-to-hematocrit ratio (LHR) has established prognostic value in diverse critical illnesses, its utility in critically ill cirrhotic patients remains underexplored. This study evaluated the role of LHR in predicting short- and long-term outcomes in this distinct clinical cohort. This retrospective study analyzed cirrhotic patients using the MIMIC-IV database. LHR was derived from initial arterial blood lactate (LAC) and hematocrit (HCT) measurements. Participants were

Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation of the spleen presenting with declining hematocrit: a case report and review of the literature.

Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation (SANT) of the spleen is an extremely rare benign lesion originating from the splenic red pulp. The pathophysiologic mechanism has not yet been explained thoroughly. These tumors are mostly asymptomatic but cause nonspecific abdominal symptoms. Most SANTs are discovered incidentally on radiographic examination during workup for another disease or during surgery for an unrelated condition. We present a case of a 53-year-old female, whose anemia workup revealed a splenic mass. Progressive enlargement led to the decision of surgical removal. Pathology

Prediction of hematocrit decline and the impact of peri-operative fluid use in lumbar spinal fusion surgery.

PURPOSE: Peri-operative blood loss unaccounted for and post-operative hematocrit decline could have a significant impact on the outcome of elective spinal surgery patients. The study assesses the accuracy of predictive models of hematocrit decline and blood loss in spinal surgery and determines the impact of peri-operative fluid administration on hematocrit levels of patients undergoing first-time single level lumbar fusion surgery for degenerative spine disease and the trend thereof in the first 24 h post-operatively. METHODS: Clinical and biochemical parameters were prospectively collected

Identification of potential sphingomyelin markers for the estimation of hematocrit in dried blood spots via a lipidomic strategy.

The dried blood spot (DBS) strategy is a convenient and minimally invasive approach to blood sampling. Due to its various advantages, this sampling technique has drawn significant attention in recent years. Hematocrit (HCT)-associated bias is one of the main obstacles that hinder wider DBS application in clinical practice. An accurate HCT estimation method could help calibrate HCT-associated bias and improve the quantification accuracy. This study used a lipidomics profiling strategy to identify HCT estimation markers using liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-ES

Low hematocrit during cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with increased risk of perioperative stroke in cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between degree of hemodilution during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and perioperative stroke has not been fully elucidated. The objective of this observational study was to evaluate the relationship between nadir hematocrit during CPB and perioperative stroke while adjusting for variables known to have an association with stroke and anemia. METHODS: Perioperative data were prospectively collected on 10,949 consecutive patients who underwent cardiac surgery with CPB from 1999 to 2004 at a quaternary care hospital. Stroke was defined as a persistent neurologic defici

Pharmacotherapeutical approaches to decreasing hematocrit and increasing claudication distance in diabetic patients with peripheral vascular disease.

The paper deals with pharmacotherapeutical approaches to decreasing hematocrit in order to improve macro and microcirculation in arteries of lower limbs of type 2 diabetes patients. The study included 37 patients with diabetic angiopathy, all of whom had inoperable changes to arteries. In order to decrease hematocrit and cause haemodilution, we used 10 % solution of hydroxyethyl starch. Indications for inclusion in the study were carried out in close cooperation with a vascular surgeon. We applied hydroxyethyl starch according to a predetermined scheme. Using normovolemic and hypervolemic haem

Neurotensin elevates hematocrit and plasma levels of the leukotrienes, LTB4, LTC4, LTD4 and LTE4, in anesthetized rats.

The IV injection of neurotensin (NT) into anesthetized rats produced a marked increase in hematocrit, labored breathing and peripheral blood stasis with cyanosis. This effect could also be produced by the NT-related peptides, neuromedin-N and xenopsin; however, it was not observed when nine other biologically active peptides, including bradykinin and substance P, were tested. Associated with these responses were increases in the plasma levels of histamine (measured radioenzymatically) and the leukotrienes, LTB4, LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4 (measured by RIA and HPLC). The increment in hematocrit after

Effects of hematocrit on brain metabolism in experimentally induced cerebral ischemia in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).

Brain tissue lactate, pyruvate, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were measured 60 min after bilateral carotid ligation in spontaneously hypertensive rats, of which hematocrit (HCT) was varied by exchanging with isovolemic homologous red cells, plasma or whole blood. Supratentorial lactate of the ischemic brain was increased more in high HCT (greater than or equal to 50%) and less in low HCT (30-39%) compared with normal HCT (40-49%). In very low HCT (less than 30%), however, lactate was increased to further extent compared with any other group of HCT (ANOVA p less than 0.0001). Lactate/pyruvat

Food-grade titanium dioxide decreases hematocrit and hemoglobin and increases compulsive-like behavior in male mice.

Food-grade titanium dioxide (E171) is widely used as a food additive, and it is known that after oral consumption, E171 is translocated into the bloodstream reaching the highest titanium level at 6 h. E171 is accumulated in some organs triggering toxicity, but the effects on the blood parameters after oral consumption have been less studied. Recently, evidence shows that oral exposure to E171 induces behavioral signs of anxiety and depression. The relation between blood alterations and psychiatric disorders has been previously demonstrated. However, the oral exposure to E171 effects on alterat

Dried blood spots sampling in case samples deprived of hematocrit level information - Investigation and calculation strategy.

The application of a new calculation strategy for the psychotropic drug concentration in blood and bone marrow samples in the form of dried blood spots (DBS) was the main aim of the study. The standard DBS method consists of the deposition of the capillary blood onto the dedicated paper cards. Nowadays, the DBS technique is seen as a fast and partly superior microsampling alternative methodology replacing the conventional venous blood and plasma collection. The calculation approach to drug concentration in the limited volume of the case sample, where the hematocrit level cannot be determined,
