BACKGROUND: Only 20 cases of abscess formation within a Rathke cleft cyst have been reported.
METHODS: Case report and review of the English-language literature.
RESULTS: A 64-year-old female was admitted with a 12-mo history of headache and decreased visual acuity and had bilateral papilledema and bitemporal hemianopsia with impairment of visual acuity. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a sellar and suprasellar mass measuring 2×2×2 cm. The lesion was removed using a transsphenoidal approach. The abscess was drained, and gram stain revealed polymorphonuclear cells and gram-positive coc

The author describes two clinical observations of migraine of the basilar artery: with infarction of the cerebellar hemisphere in a 21-year-old woman and migraine equivalents of transient homonymous hemianopsia in a 27-year-old man. The author analyzed the clinical picture and assessed seven diagnostic criteria of migraine of the basilar artery. In the prophylaxis of migrainous attacks in both instanes metipranolol-80 mg/day-proved effective.

The authors describe a case of Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease in a 64-year-old women. The peculiarity of the case lay in the fact that besides atrophic lesions of frontal lobes, extensive spongiform degeneration was present in both occipital lobes--corresponding to the so-called Heidenhain syndrome of classical neuropathology. The clinical counterpart of this location of the lesions, apart from dementia, were quadrantic hemianopsia and changes in EEG records.

To evaluate the vision-related quality of life (QoL) in patients with homonymous hemianopia (HH). The study compared the QoL in 32 patients with HH and 33 patients with monocular blindness. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and visual field test were investigated. The National Eye Institute-Visual Function Questionnaire 25 (NEI VFQ-25) and independent mobility questionnaires (IMQs) were used to assess their perceived visual and physical functioning abilities. The results of QoL questionnaires were compared in two groups. The mean deviation (MD) in the better eye was significantly lower in th

About 20%-30% of patients undergoing neurological rehabilitation report visual field defects, one of the most frequent of which is homonymous hemianopsia (loss of the same half of the visual field in both eyes). There is still no consensus as to whether homonymous hemianopsia is best treated in a restorative or compensatory manner. The aim of this review is to describe the effects of restorative rehabilitation, whose long-term efficacy is still being debated. We analyzed 56 articles describing the use of various techniques used to promote visual field recovery but concentrating on two approach

Negative phenomena can occur with seizures, but some ictal negative manifestations are rare and may lead to misdiagnosis. A patient series is presented with unusual ictal negative phenomena: neglect syndrome, catastrophic depression, apraxia, aphasia, amnesia, homonomous hemianopsia, and hemiparesis. One had repeated episodes with PLEDs but no parenchymal lesions. Clinicians should consider seizures in the setting of unexplained deficits, even if there are no positive ictal phenomena.

2 cases of disorders of craniofacial nerves resulting from progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy are described. Clinical symptoms occurred as facial paralysis, hypaesthesia, hemianopsia and deafness. In both patients, the impairment of the central nervous system (CNS) preceded indicative AIDS symptoms. Both patients died about 3 months after the first CNS symptoms had been diagnosed. Clinical and neurohistopathological findings as well as differential diagnoses are discussed.

PURPOSE: Tenecteplase (TNK) is a bioengineered variant of alteplase that has a longer half-life, a higher fibrin binding specificity, and a lower effect on systemic fibrinolytic activity. We reported a case of reversible bilateral vision loss to homonymous hemianopsia after TNK administration.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 56-year-old African American male presented with acute onset of visual loss to no light perception (NLP) in both eyes (OU), left hemiparesis, decreased sensation, and dysarthria. Brain MRI revealed acute infarct involving the right posterior cerebral artery distribution without evide

In a patient with left hemianopsia, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intracranial space-occupying lesion in the right occipital region. A cerebral abscess was removed at craniotomy. Enhanced pulmonary CT showed a small coin lesion in the peripheral lingula. and at 3-D CT two nidi with feeding arteries and draining veins were seen, indicating pulmonary arteriovenous fistula. Lingular segmentectomy was performed.

Fifty patients with pituitary adenomas were evaluated preoperatively by an ophthalmologist; of these, 68% had visual field defects, the most common (25%) a superior bitemporal depression and 16%, bitemporal hemianopsia. Almost 60% of patients with field defects had visual complaints; 38% had visual acuity in one eye of 20/60 or less. Patients with larger, nonsecreting tumors had more visual defects than patients with secreting pituitary adenomas.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis is a rare disease of central nervous system caused by defective measles virus. Chorioretinitis with macular involvement is the mostly observed ocular finding in the disease. Other reported ocular findings in the disease are cortical blindness, hemianopsia, nystagmus, extraocular muscle paresis and optic atrophy. We present a rare case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis with isolated bilateral optic neuritis as the only ocular finding without macular involvement.

Uncontrolled unilateral supratentorial expanding lesions can cause tentorial herniation. The common complications reported include ischaemic infarction of occipital lobe, brain stem haemorrhages, seizures as well as psychiatric disturbances from residual scarring of hippocampal formation, gaze palsies and death if untreated. We report a rare case of occipital lobe infarction with computerised tomography (CT) findings caused by tentorial herniation in a chronic subdural haematoma with contralateral homonymous hemianopsia and macular sparing.

A 67-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital for 3 months of new-onset headaches and meningismus that progressed to focal neurologic deficits. These first manifested as episodes of flashing lights and black blotches obscuring her vision for minutes. She also began to have visual hallucinations with formed letters and words projected onto nearby walls. She developed gait unsteadiness and difficulty using her phone and reading a clock. She was seen by neuro-ophthalmology and found to have a left homonymous hemianopsia, at which point she was admitted for further evaluation. Physical examinat

A 69-year-old man was presented to our emergency department with acute onset of hemianopsia, aphasia and dizziness. He reported that while he was sitting in front of his computer at home, he had performed a bilateral self-massage of his carotid arteries when suddenly the symptoms occurred. A neurological examination revealed a hemianopsia with a visual field loss on the right side. In addition, a mild aphasic syndrome with agraphia and a word-finding disorder (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS): 3 points) was diagnosed. The initial brain CT scan with CT angiography showed neith

A 33-year-old pregnant woman presented with intratumoral hemorrhage in an astrocytoma of the left optic nerve and chiasm manifesting as poor vision in her left eye. Visual examination found no light perception in the left eye and deteriorated acuity with temporal hemianopsia in the right eye. Computed tomography demonstrated a round high-density mass in the suprasellar region. T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed the center of the mass as mildly hypointense and T2-weighted MR imaging as hypointense. Both T1- and T2-weighted MR imaging showed the rim of the mass as hyperintense. S

Rathke's cleft cysts are benign epithelial-lined sellar and suprasellar lesions that are often incidental findings but can cause visual deficits, hypopituitarism, and headaches when they enlarge and compress adjacent structures. Recurrence after surgical treatment remains challenging despite various surgical approaches. Marsupialization has emerged as an alternative technique for complex recurrent cases, establishing permanent communication between the cyst and the nasal cavity while minimizing surgical risk. We present a case of a 76-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus, a history of me

INTRODUCTION: McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS) is a rare disorder characterized by the classic triad of precocious puberty, polyostotic fibrous dysplasia and café-au-lait pigmented skin lesions. Cystic change is rare in fibrous dysplasia (FD), especially in McCune-Albright syndrome. There were no reports about cyst degeneration in MAS which resulted in abnormal visual acuity and visual fields. Herein, we report a female patient with MAS associated with sphenoid bone cysts which resulted in visual deterioration to describe the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings

A case of dystonia treated with Gamma Knife radiosurgery is reported. A 37-year-old female patient had a history of tuberculous meningitis at the age of 10 and subsequently developed a left hemidystonia. MRI showed an old infarction in the right caudate nucleus, globus pallidus and putamen. Stereotactic Gamma Knife radiosurgery was employed to make a lesion in the right posteroventral globus pallidus. Postoperatively, the patient's condition improved. However, homonymous hemianopsia developed postoperatively.
