Platelet Endothelial Cell Adhesion Molecule 1 (PECAM-1) deficient mice in the FVB/n strain exhibit fatal chronic pulmonary fibrotic disease. The illness occurs in the absence of a detectable pro-inflammatory event. PECAM-1 is vital to the stability of vascular permeability, leukocyte extravasation, clotting of platelets, and clearance of apoptotic cells. We show here that the spontaneous development of fibrotic disease in PECAM-1 deficient FVB/n mice is characterized by early loss of vascular integrity in pulmonary capillaries, resulting in spontaneous microbleeds. Hemosiderin-positive macroph

PURPOSE: To describe and emphasize importance of recognizing superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system (CNS) when assessing cerebellar ataxia syndrome
CASE REPORT: Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system (CNS) is a rare disorder that results from chronic hemosiderin deposition in the subpial layers of the brain and the spinal cord. Although recurrent bleeding in the subarachnoid space is the most likely explanation, a definite history of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is often lacking. Among the clinical presentations described in the literature include sensorin

Eleven blood-stained corneas were examined by light and transmission electron microscopy at intervals ranging from one month to seven years after initial staining occurred. Blood staining in each case was associated with focal loss of endothelial cells or endothelial degenerative changes and elevated intraocular pressure. Globules of erythrocytic breakdown products penetrated the discontinuous endothelium and intact Descemet's membrane. Large deposits, primarily extracellular, displaced but did not interrupt the stromal lamellae. Keratocytes in blood-stained corneas contained erythrocytic brea

A typical case of intranodal myofibroblastoma arising in a submandibular lymph node is reported. It provides proof that this tumor can occur in extrainguinal regions and suggests that the submandibular region is a prevalent site. The combination of benign spindle cells and foci of pale fibrillary matrix and hemosiderin granules were characteristic features in the fine-needle aspiration cytologic findings.

The authors describe atypical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings for pathologically proven paraganglioma of the filum terminale in a 27-year-old man. MRI showed an intradural tumour, which enhanced after administration of gadolinium and which showed evidence of cystic areas. Hemosiderin rings and vessels were not observed.

PURPOSE: To report a case of corneal perforation as a rare and late manifestation of choroidal melanoma and to highlight the major histopathological findings of this unusual combined clinical presentation.
METHODS: A 74-year-old male patient presented to our department due to corneal perforation of the right eye with the absence of light perception for 6 months. The intraocular pressure was hard on palpation. Because of the protracted finding and reduced visual prognosis, primary enucleation was performed.
RESULTS: The histopathological examination revealed choroidal melanoma with epithelioi

BACKGROUND: Superficial siderosis (SS) of the central nervous system is a disease characterized by deposition of hemosiderin in the leptomeninges (arachnoid and pia mater) due to chronic intradural bleeding. One of the etiologic mechanisms proposed is a dural breach secondary to trauma with a consequent arachnoidocele in contact with an exuberant venous plexus. We describe a unique case of clival arachnoidocele treated by an endoscopic endonasal approach and closure of the defect with fat and nasoseptal flap.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 35-year-old man with a history of severe head trauma 20 years ag

A variety of syndromes leading to hemosiderosis in men cause ocular lesions. The purpose of the present study was to determine the distribution of iron and of transferrin in the eyes and lacrimal glands of rats in experimental hemosiderosis, so as to achieve a better understanding of the formation of the ocular lesions observed in patients with advanced hemosiderosis. In order to achieve hemosiderosis the rats were fed 3% (w/w) carbonyl iron or received i.p. or i.v. polymaltose iron. Hemosiderin deposits were detected in macrophages lying in the interlobular connective tissue of lacrimal gland

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from four infants 3 days to 4 months of age with a history of prematurity or birth trauma were found to contain clusters of immature cells. These cells were arranged in groups or syncytia, sometimes with nuclear molding, and were cytologically characterized by scant basophilic cytoplasm, nuclei with fine nuclear chromatin, and small nucleoli. The picture simulated the appearance of metastatic tumor admixed with hemosiderin-laden macrophages, erythrocytes, and leukocytes. Because of the low numbers of cells or aggregates present in CSF samples and the relativel

Hematofluorometric determination of zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) is a screening method for the assessment of iron deficiency (ID). Chronic disorders are frequently accompanied by anemias of unclear origin, most probably caused by an impairment of iron metabolism. We investigated the relevance of ZPP for the detection of derangements of iron metabolism in anemias of chronic disorders (ACD). In 19 patients with ACD caused by chronic inflammatory non-neoplastic diseases, ZPP was determined and correlated with ferritin, transferrin saturation, and hemoglobin (Hb). Marrow sideroblast counts and semiqu

BACKGROUND: Epiretinal membranes (ERMs), secondary to retinal cell proliferation on the retinal surface, usually affect patients over 50 years of age but occur rarely in children. Here we report the case of a 4-year-old patient with a unilateral sub-inner limiting membrane (sub-ILM) membrane mimicking epiretinal membrane with notable ultrastructural features indicating its possible origin from old sub-ILM hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-year-old boy was admitted with the complaint of poor vision in his right eye, which had been detected at school vision screening performed 6 months earlier

Melano-macrophage centres, also known as macrophage aggregates, are distinctive groupings of pigment-containing cells within the tissues of heterothermic vertebrates. In fish they are normally located in the stroma of the haemopoietic tissue of the spleen and the kidney, although in amphibians and reptiles, and some fish, they are also found in the liver. They may also develop in association with chronic inflammatory lesions elsewhere in the body and during ovarian atresia. In higher teleosts, they often exist as complex discrete centres, containing lymphocytes and macrophages, and may be prim

One hundred eighty-seven consecutive patients with persistent ovarian cysts and endometriosis underwent laparoscopic evaluation and ovarian cystectomy. All patients had been followed for a minimum of 6 weeks prior to surgery. The cysts were identified initially to be endometriomas based on their gross appearance and the presence of endometriosis at other pelvic sites. Presumed endometriomas were classified into three types based on size, cyst contents, ease of removal of the capsule, adhesions of the cyst to other structures and location of superficial endometrial implants relative to the cyst

BACKGROUND: Angiosarcoma, also known as malignant hemangioendothelioma, is a rare vasogenic malignant tumor, commonly found on the skin of the head and neck, rarely occurring in the intracranial region. As for intracranial meningeal angiosarcoma, only 8 cases have been reported before and there is no clinical study with large sample size. We report here a case of parasagittal meningeal angiosarcoma.

We report on a case of cutaneous endometriosis having developed in the scar of a cesarean section. The slowly growing cutaneous nodule did not cause any cyclic pain or swelling. Histologic examination showed mainly histiocytic granulation tissue without multinuclear cells and extensive phagocytosis of hemosiderin. Only few tubular glands were seen.

Granuloma faciale is a rare, chronic dermatologic disorder, which mainly affects the face. Recently, dermoscopy has been demonstrated as an important ancillary tool on the clinical diagnosis of facial dermatoses. We report two cases of granuloma faciale with yellow areas on dermoscopy that was not yet described in the literature, corresponding to abundant hemosiderin on histopathological examination.

Superficial siderosis (SS) of the CNS is a rare and often unrecognized condition. Caused by hemosiderin deposition from chronic, repetitive hemorrhage in the subarachnoid space, it results in parenchymal damage in the subpial layers of the brain and spinal cord. T2-weighted MRI shows the characteristic hypointensity of hemosiderin deposition, classically occurring around the cerebellum, brainstem, and spinal cord. Patients present with progressive gait ataxia and sensorineural hearing impairment. Although there have been several studies, case reports, and review articles over the years, the cl
