[Between anxiety and hope: the experiences of women with vulval intraepithelial neoplasia during their illness trajectory - a qualitative approach].

The vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is a rare chronic skin condition that may progress to an invasive carcinoma of the vulva. Major issues affecting women's health were occurring symptoms, negative influences on sexuality, uncertainty concerning the illness progression and changes in the body image. Despite this, there is little known about the lived experiences of the illness trajectory. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the experiences of women with VIN during the illness trajectory. In a secondary data analysis of the foregoing qualitative study we analysed eight narra

[Schistosomiasis and the challenge of community participation].

Using a semiotic and hermeneutical approach, the present paper discusses various theoretical elements in the analysis of popular views of schistosomiasis. Based on field work conducted in the State of Bahia, the authors identify two main processes in the construction of meaning related to schistosomiasis and show that depending on the social context of experience the disease may have a primary or secondary meaning for the populations affected by it. The first level of meaning refers to bodily experiences and is shared intersubjectively, whereas the second type is built on the discourse of heal

Nursing practice with incarcerated women: caring within mandated (sic) alienation.

The number of incarcerated women in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate. Incarcerated women often come from environments that are significant for violence, drug abuse, and a kind of chronic chaos. Many enter the penal system with acute and chronic physical problems along with mental health issues that have long gone unaddressed. From a critical hermeneutical perspective, professional and personal experience and dialogical engagement with other prison nurses are combined to examine the structure and development of caring practices behind prison walls. Analysis to date reveals th

Breast Cancer Barriers to Education and Screening in People Experiencing Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Each year in the United States, approximately 42,211 women and men die from breast cancer. Individuals experiencing homelessness are disproportionately affected, facing a higher incidence of the disease. People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have a higher incidence of breast cancer and mortality than domiciled individuals. Across all 50 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides free breast cancer screenings for eligible individuals with limited financial resources. However, PEH have screening rates that remain below the national average. Early detection is cr

Being Met as marked - patients' experiences of being infected with community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

BACKGROUND: It is known that patients who acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in hospitals suffer and feel as plague. Moreover, the patient interaction with nurses and physicians is described as frightening. Little is known about patient experiences after having acquired CA-MRSA concerning care and everyday life. AIM: To reveal and interpret otherwise healthy patients' lived experiences of receiving care and their everyday life after having acquired community MRSA (CA-MRSA). METHODS: A phenomenological hermeneutic approach guided by Ricouer was conducted. Interviews w

Caregivers' lived experience in trying to read slight movements in a child with severe brain injury: A phenomenological study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore caregivers' lived experience of reading slight movements of a child with severe brain injury. BACKGROUND: Despite increased need, the development of individual care for children with severe brain injuries has been prevented by their severe physical state and the poor reproducibility of their movements. In addition to a lack of evidence on the motor characteristics of patients with severe brain injury with multiple disabilities, their own development contributes to increasing variability in their states. Thus, caregivers are compelled to rely on their experience

"My Whole World Fell Apart": Parents Discovering Their Child Has Anorexia Nervosa.

This was the first study to examine the experience of parents who discover their child was living with anorexia nervosa (AN), thus fulfilling a critical gap in the eating disorder literature. Gadamerian hermeneutic inquiry was the guiding philosophy and method used to investigate this topic. Dialogues with parents revealed the ambiguity inherent within discovery; the isolation, betrayal, and loss felt by parents; and the complicated family dynamics occurring during the process of discovering one's child has AN. As such, when discoveries are made, parents play a vital role in the development an

Meanings of being received and met by others as experienced by women with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a common chronic pain syndrome that mostly affects middle-aged women. Our aim with this study was to elucidate meanings of being received and met by others as experienced by women with FM. Interviews with a narrative approach were conducted with 9 women. We analyzed the transcribed interviews with a phenomenological hermeneutical interpretation. The findings revealed two themes: being seen as a malingerer and being acknowledged. Meanings of being received and met by others, as experienced by women with FM, can be understood as a movement between the two perspectives. When

Shared decision making in a semi-secluded chronic psychiatric ward: The reflective lifeworld experiences of patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorders and nursing staff.

BACKGROUND: Shared decision making (SDM) enhances recovery-oriented mental healthcare, but literature predominately focuses on doctor-patient collaboration leaving the role of mental health nurses (MHN's) underexposed. AIM: This study describes the experiences of patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder with SDM in a semi-secluded psychiatric facility, and the attitudes toward SDM by MHN's. METHOD: A hermeneutic phenomenological design. RESULTS: Seven patients and six MHN's were interviewed. Although MHNs were skeptical to utilize SDM, and patients often feel omitted, investi

Shoulder dystocia: a qualitative exploration of what works.

OBJECTIVE: to explore expert practitioners' methods of managing shoulder dystocia. DESIGN AND SETTING: a qualitative interpretive study enabled a descriptive, hermeneutic analysis of data collected. Data were collected via tape recorded interviews, transcribed and analysed to explore themes and meanings. PARTICIPANTS: five clinicians (four midwives and one obstetrician) who have significant experience in the management of shoulder dystocia and work in high risk maternity practice. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: the results of this study demonstrate that the actions to be taken in the event of s

What is a "good outcome" in psychotherapy? A qualitative exploration of former patients' point of view.

The aim of this study was to explore how former psychotherapy patients characterize "good outcome" after having completed treatment that they described as successful, in the sense that therapy had changed their lives in ways that made a difference. Semistructured qualitative depth interviews were conducted with 10 former psychotherapy patients. A hermeneutical-phenomenological approach was used to analyse interview transcripts. The former patients' descriptions of good outcome clustered around four themes: establishing new ways of relating to others; less symptomatic distress, or changes in be

'It causes me to minimise myself': impostor phenomenon in simulation educators.

BACKGROUND: Impostor phenomenon (IP) is a common experience among healthcare professionals, characterised by persistent feelings of inadequacy, fear of being exposed as a fraud, and self-doubt, despite external evidence of competence. In healthcare simulation, where educators frequently transition between roles and responsibilities, little is known about how simulation educators experience and navigate IP throughout their careers. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of IP among healthcare simulation educators. METHODS: The study builds on our earlier work in which simulation educ

The embodied experience of pregnancy with an ileostomy.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To understand women's experience of pregnancy with an ileostomy following bowel resection for inflammatory bowel disease or familial adenomatous polyposis. BACKGROUND: While symptoms of IBD/FAP can be debilitating and life-threatening, ostomy formation can effectively manage symptoms. Research on pregnant women with an ostomy is sparse. While some literature suggests pregnant women with an ostomy can have a normal pregnancy and birth, documented stoma complications include intestinal obstruction, peristomal hernia, retraction, stenosis, laceration, bleeding, prolapse, pou

How clinical nurse and midwifery consultants optimise patient care in a tertiary referral hospital.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To develop new insights into the phenomenon of clinical nurse/midwifery consultant clinical effectiveness in a tertiary referral hospital. BACKGROUND: International studies identify the pivotal role clinical nurse/midwifery consultants play in patient outcomes. There remains, however, a significant deficit in our knowledge of how these, or other advanced practice nurses and midwives, apply their extensive experience, ontological understandings and tacit knowledge to the enhancement of patient outcomes in complex healthcare environments. DESIGN: This study was underpinned

Depression and creativity - the case of the German poet, scientist and statesman J. W. v. Goethe.

BACKGROUND: Goethe was one of the most creative poets, scientists and statesmen ever existing. Since the age of fourteen, he suffered from severe mood swings. His descriptions of feelings, emotions, and mental states related to temperamental and poetic melancholy, depressive episodes, dysthymic phases, and creativity are unique in respect to their phenomenological precision and richness. Furthermore, his (self-) therapeutic strategies and his self transformation in literature remain interesting until today for psychopathology, psychotherapy and creativity research. METHODS: Goethe's self-asse

Myth, Meaning, and Mental Health: Rollo May's Existential Psychology in Dialogue with Contemporary Religion and Health Research.

The contemporary mental health crisis is increasingly described in terms of meaninglessness, fragmentation of identity, and spiritual disorientation. While empirical research in religion and health has demonstrated consistent associations between religiosity, spirituality, and psychological well-being, the underlying symbolic and narrative mechanisms that sustain these associations remain insufficiently theorized. This article revisits Rollo May's concept of myth as a foundational structure of psychological integration and examines its relevance for contemporary religion and health scholarship

From Feeling Broken to Looking Beyond Broken: Palestinian Mothers' Experiences of Having a Child With Spina Bifida.

Spina bifida (SB) is the second most common birth defect worldwide. Mothers of children with SB face extraordinary challenges due to the complicated conditions and disability of their children. Little is known about the impact of these challenges on the mothers' well-being, particularly in Middle Eastern culture, where chronic illness and disability are perceived as a stigma, and care of disabled children has traditionally been the responsibility of the mother. The aim of this study was to illuminate mothers' lived experience of having a child with SB in Palestine. Twenty Arab-Muslim mothers l

Suprapubic catheters--a shared understanding, from the other side looking in.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to explore the experiences of people living with a suprapubic catheter. METHOD: This descriptive study was guided by the philosophy of Gadamerian hermeneutics. Data were gathered via indepth interviews with 6 adults living in the community who had a suprapubic catheter for long-term urinary bladder drainage. Interpretation of the data occurred via thematic analysis of the participants' stories. RESULTS: Two distinct but interrelated themes emerged. Participants shifted, over time, from negative to positive experiences (psychologically, physically, a
