Impact of Repeated Negative Affective Social Media Content on Acceptability of the IUD.

Access to safe and effective contraception is important for the advancement of public health and feminist goals. Unfortunately, social media harbors negative content about contraceptives, specifically the intrauterine device (IUD). Viewing this content repeatedly may deter people from considering IUDs. Value-centered decision-making about contraceptives requires that people are not unduly pressured or biased by external sources. Social media may bias people by overrepresenting negative experiences and reducing acceptability of IUDs. This study examined whether exposure to negative IUD content

Weak Supervision for Affordable Modeling of Electrocardiogram Data.

Analysing electrocardiograms (ECGs) is an inexpensive and non-invasive, yet powerful way to diagnose heart disease. ECG studies using Machine Learning to automatically detect abnormal heartbeats so far depend on large, manually annotated datasets. While collecting vast amounts of unlabeled data can be straightforward, the point-by-point annotation of abnormal heartbeats is tedious and expensive. We explore the use of multiple weak supervision sources to learn diagnostic models of abnormal heartbeats via human designed heuristics, without using ground truth labels on individual data points. Rejecting conspiracies doesn't necessarily mean that you're smart: The relationship between conspiracy discrimination and reasoning ability.

Research examining the psychological predictors of conspiracy belief has overwhelmingly examined conspiracies that are unverified and/or implausible. Doing so potentially conflates 'rational' thinking with the tendency to heuristically reject conspiracist explanations. In three studies, we take a different approach, examining the predictors of the accuracy with which people can discriminate between unverified conspiracy theories and verified conspiracies (i.e. conspiracies that form part of the official record). The ability to discriminate between unverified and verified conspiracies was consi

Cortical Lifelogging: The Posterior Parietal Cortex as Sensory History Buffer.

To compare information and reach decisions effectively, our brain uses multiple heuristics, which can, however, induce biases in behavior. An elegant study by Akrami et al. (2018) finds evidence for one such heuristic in a sensory-based comparison task and identifies its location to the posterior parietal cortex.

Plasticity facilitates sustainable growth in the commons.

In the commons, communities whose growth depends on public good, individuals often rely on surprisingly simple strategies, or heuristics, to decide whether to contribute to the shared resource (at risk of exploitation by free-riders). Although this appears a limitation, we show here how four heuristics lead to sustainable growth when coupled to specific ecological constraints. The two simplest ones-contribute permanently or switch stochastically between contributing or not-are first shown to bring sustainability when the public good efficiently promotes growth. If efficiency declines and the c

Rationality is metabolically bounded, not cognitively biased.

Haueis and Colaço's framework can be inscribed into a positive theory of metabolic rationality where cognitive strategy selection is governed by allostatic energy management across sequential decisions under uncertainty. Heuristics emerge as solutions to a metabolic opportunity cost problem with distinct empirical predictions.

Non-written guidelines in pituitary tumor surgery. The hidden curriculum.

PURPOSE: Although clinical guidelines provide evidence-based recommendations for pituitary tumor management, real-world surgical practice also relies on non-written rules derived from tacit knowledge, experiential judgment, and shared professional norms. These principles help clinicians manage complexity and uncertainty, not fully addressed by formal protocols. This review aims to identify non-written guidelines across the perioperative continuum of pituitary surgery and to examine how they complement established patient safety frameworks. METHODS: We examined recurring clinical heuristics tra

The Hunger Games: Using hunger to promote healthy choices in self-control conflicts.

The majority of existing research and conventional wisdom would advise against shopping on an empty stomach as hunger is assumed to encourage impulsive choices that typically lead to self-control failure (i.e., favouring short-term gratifications at the expense of long-term goals). Nonetheless, through two studies the current research aims to demonstrate that hungry consumers would not always be disadvantaged when encountering a self-control conflict involving a trade-off choice between a healthy vs. a more palatable but unhealthy choice. Particularly we posit that the choice outcome of the se

Consensus of All Solutions for Intractable Phylogenetic Tree Inference.

Solving median tree problems is a classic approach for inferring species trees from a collection of discordant gene trees. Median tree problems are typically NP-hard and dealt with by local search heuristics. Unfortunately, such heuristics generally lack provable correctness and precision. Algorithmic advances addressing this uncertainty have led to exact dynamic programming formulations suitable to solve a well-studied group of median tree problems for smaller phylogenetic analyses. However, these formulations allow computing only very few optimal species trees out of possibly many such trees

Metaheuristics optimization-based ensemble of deep neural networks for Mpox disease detection.

The rising number of cases of human Mpox has emerged as a major global concern due to the daily increase of cases in several countries. The disease presents various skin symptoms in infected individuals, making it crucial to promptly identify and isolate them to prevent widespread community transmission. Rapid determination and isolation of infected individuals are therefore essential to curb the spread of the disease. Most research in the detection of Mpox disease has utilized convolutional neural network (CNN) models and ensemble methods. However, to the best of our knowledge, none have util

Configurational Pathways to Reader Engagement with Online Weight Management Promotion in China: A Crisp-Set Qualitative Comparative Analysis.

Abnormal body weight has become an increasingly prominent public health concern in China. In response, national health authorities launched a three-year Weight Management Year campaign, disseminating extensive online risk communication to promote public awareness and healthier lifestyles. Despite these efforts, reader engagement (RE) varies substantially, raising questions about how health risk can be communicated more effective. Previous studies have explored various antecedents of RE, but often in isolation, making it difficult to capture the complex interplay of factors in real-world settin

Interactive editing of virtual chordae tendineae for the simulation of the mitral valve in a decision support system.

PURPOSE: Decision support systems for mitral valve disease are an important step toward personalized surgery planning. A simulation of the mitral valve apparatus is required for decision support. Building a model of the chordae tendineae is an essential component of a mitral valve simulation. Due to image quality and artifacts, the chordae tendineae cannot be reliably detected in medical imaging. METHODS: Using the position-based dynamics framework, we are able to realistically simulate the opening and closing of the mitral valve. Here, we present a heuristic method for building an initial ch

Enhancing insight in scientific problem solving by highlighting the functional features of prototypes: an fMRI study.

Insight can be the first step toward creating a groundbreaking product. As evident in anecdotes and major inventions in history, heuristic events (heuristic prototypes) prompted inventors to acquire insight when solving problems. Bionic imitation in scientific innovation is an example of this kind of problem solving. In particular, heuristic prototypes (e.g., the lotus effect; the very high water repellence exhibited by lotus leaves) help solve insight problems (e.g., non-stick surfaces). We speculated that the biological functional feature of prototypes is a critical factor in inducing insigh

Decompensated Differential Carbon Dioxide Removal During Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation: A Physiologic Framework.

Decompensated differential carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) removal can occur during spontaneous breathing on peripheral venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) when a low right radial arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO 2 ) prompts sweep gas flow (SGF) reduction, decreasing extracorporeal CO 2 removal and shifting the compensatory burden to the native lung. When cardiac output (CO) remains low, this shift may require disproportionately higher alveolar ventilation, manifesting as tachypnea and increased work of breathing. We therefore frame this phenotype as a CO-depend

A stepwise approach to open surgery for the frontal sinus.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in endoscopic techniques, there are still instances when the frontal sinus must be approached externally. Given its variable anatomy, the frontal sinus continues to present a challenge to the surgeon. Our rule of thumb capitalises on the consistent embryological development of the frontal sinus, aiding safe external access. METHODS AND RESULTS: The presented stepwise approach includes trephination, fenestration, an osteoplastic flap and obliteration. The obliteration procedure has produced good results in managing those patients with disabling symptoms despite mul

Reasoning about scientific evidence: effects of juror gender and evidence quality on juror decisions in a hostile work environment case.

This study examined whether participants were sensitive to variations in the quality of an experiment discussed by an expert witness and whether they used heuristic cues when evaluating the expert evidence. In the context of a hostile work environment case, different versions of the expert testimony varied the presence of heuristic cues (i.e., whether the expert's research was generally accepted or ecologically valid) and evidence quality (i.e., the construct validity of the expert's research). Men who heard expert testimony were more likely to find that the plaintiff's workplace was hostile t

Information Processing and Decision-Making in Pathological Worriers and their Potential Role in Mechanisms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

Systematic information processing and decision-making under uncertainty are key constructs of new conceptions explaining the severity of pathological worry. The current study attempted to analyze their usefulness in subclinical and clinical groups. In the first phase of the study (N = 251) participants were examined with the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), a GP consultationrelated survey, and a screening survey for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In the second phase (N = 220), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the PSWQ, and tasks measuring systematic information processing (SIP) ve

Monitoring Upper Extremity Function of Individuals With Breast Cancer: Development and Usability of the StrongArms-Cancer mHealth System.

Upper extremity (UE) impairment is a leading cause of decreased function in breast cancer (BC) survivors. Failure to recognize and properly manage these impairments can lead to significant and sustained functional limitations. Few supports exist to help survivors monitor UE impairments related to BC over time. The purpose of this project was to evaluate usability of the StrongArms-Cancer mHealth system from the patient and the health-provider perspective. This project had 2 parts to evaluate the usability of the StrongArms-Cancer system. Part 1: Participant usability testing; Part 2: Expert he

Identification of factors associated with diagnostic error in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Missed, delayed or incorrect diagnoses are considered to be diagnostic errors. The aim of this paper is to describe the methodology of a study to analyse cognitive aspects of the process by which primary care (PC) physicians diagnose dyspnoea. It examines the possible links between the use of heuristics, suboptimal cognitive acts and diagnostic errors, using Reason's taxonomy of human error (slips, lapses, mistakes and violations). The influence of situational factors (professional experience, perceived overwork and fatigue) is also analysed. METHODS: Cohort study of new episodes

Genetic algorithm-guided discovery of additive combinations that direct quantum dot assembly.

The use of combinations of organic additives to control crystallization, as occurs in biomineralization, is rarely investigated due to the vast potential reaction space. It is demonstrated here that combinatorial approaches led by genetic algorithm heuristics can enable identification of active additive combinations, and four key organic molecules are rapidly identified, which generate highly fluorescent CdS quantum dot superstructures.
