Climate change vulnerability, ecological resilience, and adaptive capacity of Angami agroecological systems in Kohima, Nagland, Northeast India.

The present study assessed the climate vulnerability and ecological resilience of the Angami agroecological system in Kohima district of Nagaland, Northeast India, using the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Vulnerability framework. Despite growing research on climate vulnerability, a significant gap remains in developing integrated frameworks that capture the interactions among socio-economic conditions, ecological processes, and ecosystem services within indigenous agroforestry systems (AFS) of the Eastern Himalayas. Addressing this gap, the study attempts to integrate socio-economic

Ocular myiasis due to Oestrus ovis in young patients from urban settings in the Himalayan region: An indicator of human-environment conflict?

Ocular myiasis is a relatively rare clinical entity that mainly affects the old and debilitated people with poor hygiene in rural settings and has a strong occupational predisposition. Presented here are two unusual cases of ocular myiasis caused by O. ovis after exposure to dust in young individuals with no history of contact with animals in the Garhwal region of the Himalayas. Although early presentation meant a mild illness and early resolution, the reporting of the cases from this region may be an indicator of human-environment conflicts.

High altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) in an Indian pilgrim.

Increasing number of Hindu pilgrims visit the Himalayas where some of them suffer from high altitude illness including the life threatening forms, high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral oedema. Compared to tourists and trekkers, pilgrims are usually ignorant about altitude illness. This is a case of a pilgrim who suffered from HAPE on his trip to Kailash-Mansarovar and is brought to a tertiary level hospital in Kathmandu. This report emphasises on how to treat a patient with HAPE, a disease which is increasingly being seen in the high altitude pilgrim population.

Fonsecaea pedrosoi: a rare etiology in fungal keratitis.

Fungal corneal ulcer is common in India due to tropical climate and a large agrarian population that is at risk. Fonsecaea pedrosoi is the most common agent of chromoblastomycosis, a chronic localized fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissues mainly involving lower extremities. We report a rare case of corneal chromoblastomycosis caused by F.pedrosoi, which was successfully treated with topical Amphotericin B followed by a long course of oral antifungal therapy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of mycotic keratitis caused by F.pedrosoi, from the foothills of Him

Penetrating head injury with bilateral eye avulsion due to Himalayan bear bite.

The Himalayan black bear (Ursus thibetanus or Selenarctos thibetanus), although an omnivore, is more carnivorous than its American counterpart. It is also more aggressive towards humans and is a threatened species because of the deforestation in the Himalayas. Furthermore, poverty, encroachment of the forest, extensive deforestation, lack of education and living near the forest are factors that increase the probability of such animal injuries. We report the case of a 35-year-old woman who suffered a severe penetrating head injury with scalp and bilateral eye avulsion, which was managed success

First Report of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) in District Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan.

Our article documents the presence of Aedes albopictus (Skuse) from urban and rural locations in the lower Himalaya Mountains, northern Pakistan. Larvae were collected from graveyards, junkyards, plant nurseries, parks, and houses. Used tires, bird drinking pots, and water storage containers were the most common containers used by this mosquito. In the absence of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), Ae. albopictus appears to be the primary vector of recent dengue virus outbreaks.

Tremelimumab and durvalumab in the treatment of unresectable, advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.

Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, with over 780,000 deaths in 2018. About 90% of liver cancer cases are hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a prototype of inflammation-driven cancer, leading to a robust rationale for the exploration of immune therapy. Previously approved agents for first-line therapy, such as sorafenib, lenvatinib and bevacizumab combined with atezolizumab, have focused on angiogenesis. HIMALAYA was the first trial to demonstrate the benefit of dual immune checkpoint inhibitors, representing a new treatment option in this scenario.

Mahamari Plague: Rats, Colonial Medicine and Indigenous Knowledge in Kumaon and Garhwal, India.

Colonial approaches to animal and zoonotic diseases are often scrutinized in terms of their recognition or dismissal of indigenous knowledge. In this article I examine British colonial approaches to "Mahamari plague" in mid-nineteenth century Kumaon and Garhwal, in the Indian Himalayas. Discussing two key colonial medical expeditions in the region, I argue that the eventual recognition of the validity of Kumaoni and Garhwali knowledge of Mahamari and its relation to rats intensified intrusive colonial intervention on indigenous lifeways. I examine this neglected impact of the colonial recognit

Diversity and Distribution of Glomoid and Non-Glomoid Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Associated With Solanaceae.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are widespread root-associated fungi that contribute to plant nutrient acquisition and soil ecosystem processes. However, information on the distribution of Glomoid and non-Glomoid AMF associated with Solanaceae hosts in the northwestern Himalaya remains limited. The present study evaluated the diversity, distribution, and observed host occurrence patterns of AMF associated with tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), capsicum (Capsicum annuum), eggplant (Solanum melongena), and black nightshade (Solanum nigrum). A total of 72 AMF morphotaxa representing 13 genera wer

In-situ depth-resolved gamma spectrometry of natural radionuclides in central Nepal: Radiological assessment across Himalayan formations.

Potassium-dominated elevated natural radiation environments are exceptionally rare globally, with documented high background radiation areas typically being thorium-dominated (Kerala, India; Guarapari, Brazil) or uranium-dominated (Ramsar, Iran). This study characterizes such an environment in the Himalayan region within the Markhu Formation of central Nepal and establishes the first depth-resolved radionuclide baseline across eight geological formations from Kathmandu to Hetauda. In-situ gamma ray spectrometry at 10 cm intervals to 50 cm depth was used to quantify 40K, 238U, and 232Th distrib

High-elevation angiosperms maintain extensive living storage tissue with large non-structural carbohydrate pools.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plant survival at extreme elevations depends on how carbon and nutrients are stored and mobilized at the cellular scale. High-elevation plants experiencing persistent cold and short growing seasons are predicted to maintain large pools of non-structural carbohydrates (NSCs) and extensive storage tissue that buffer metabolism and enhance stress tolerance, yet comparative evidence across diverse floras remains scarce. Here, we examine whether high-mountain plants in the western Himalayas increase NSC pools and, consequently, the proportion of storage tissue. METHODS: We ana

Gut microbiomes of tribal communities in India vary with dairy and grain consumption.

Highly diverse gut microbiomes of non-industrialized populations share similarities with ancestral states of symbiosis and are linked to low rates of chronic inflammatory diseases. Yet there is still limited understanding of the diverse array of non-industrialized gut microbiomes throughout the world, including among the tribal populations of India. In this study, we surveyed dietary and fecal microbiome variation among 76 adults from eight tribal communities in four biogeographic regions of India, including Warli on the western coast, Gond and Madia in the northeast Deccan Plateau, Kabui (or

Integrating morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits to explain elevational distributions in Himalayan steppe and alpine plants.

Understanding plant adaptive strategies that determine species distributions and ecological optima is crucial for predicting responses to global change drivers. While functional traits provide mechanistic insights into distribution patterns, the specific trait syndromes that best predict elevational optima, particularly in less-studied regions such as the Himalayas, remain unclear. This study employs a novel hierarchical framework integrating morphological, anatomical, and physiological traits to explain elevational distributions among 310 plant species across a 3,500-m gradient (2,650-6,150 m

Clinico-immunologic evaluation of allergy to Himalayan tree pollen in atopic subjects in India--a new record.

Exposure to local pollen allergens has a direct bearing on the prevalence of allergic symptoms among the inhabiting atopic population. The populations in the Himalayas and around it are exposed to a variety of pollen grains from trees growing in the region, but the pollen-population interaction has not been clinically investigated. Himalayan tree pollen from five different taxa, i.e. Alnus nitida (AN), Betula utilis (BU), Cedrus deodara (CD), Mallotus phillipensis (MP) and Quercus incana (QI) were evaluated for their allergenicity in the Indian population by in vivo (skin prick test) and in vi

Chemosensitivity and regulation of ventilation during sleep at high altitudes.

The paper presents new observations on young high altitude natives (Andes and Himalayas), testing the hypothesis that periodic breathing with apnea during sleep is determined by their ventilatory sensitivity to hypoxia and its interaction with the sleep state. The hypothesis is in general supported by the evidence. But, contrary to expectation, the ventilatory sensitivity to hypoxia in the Sherpa children was significantly lower than those in the Andes. Despite that departure, the magnitude of ventilatory periodicity among the subjects was internally consistent with their ventilatory sensitivi

Phytochemical profiling of the leaves and roots of Geum elatum Wall. ex G.Don (Rosaceae).

Geum elatum Wall. Ex G.Don is a medicinal plant that is native to the Hindu Kush region of the Himalayas. G. elatum roots and leaves collected from this region were investigated using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (by analysis of aqueous methanol extracts) to reveal the detection of compounds assigned as hydrolysable tannins, condensed tannins, flavonoids and triterpenes in the leaf and root extracts. The dimeric ellagitannin, gemin A, was isolated from the roots and the structure was elucidated using techniques in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The de

Complementary evaluation of phase III immunotherapy trials in advanced HCC using the survival-inferred fragility index.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents a major health burden, historically treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has reshaped treatments, with pivotal trials (IMbrave150 and HIMALAYA) establishing ICI-based combinations as first-line therapy. Traditional statistical metrics may not fully capture the robustness of trial outcomes. The Survival-Inferred Fragility Index (SIFI) quantifies trial stability as the minimum number of additional survival events required to lose statistical significance. METHODS: We systematically

Evaluation of season and sex specific differential gonadal transcriptomics in Himalayan snow trout Schizothorax plagiostomus, Heckel, 1838.

Despite its wide presence in cold-water bodies of central Asian mountains, Schizothorax plagiostomus is highly neglected Himalayan ichthyofauna. Here we have performed de novo RNA-sequencing in adult S. plagiostomus gonads captured from natural habitat of Garhwal Himalaya [during three distinct maturational stages (pre-spawning, spawning and post-spawning) for both sexes] and compared the season and sex specific differential transcriptomic profiles. Functional analyses of KEGG pathway and GO enrichment demonstrated augmentation in cellular signaling for multiple growth factors, chemokines, cyt
