Mesh-represented and learning-empowered hologram synthesis for full 3D holographic displays.

Holographic displays are a transforming technology for immersive virtual and augmented reality systems. Exploring accurate yet efficient computer-generated holography (CGH) algorithms for three-dimensional (3D) content is a valuable research field. Recent advancements in layer-based CGH may exhibit limited capacity to convey comprehensive 3D information in accurately representing tilted angular spectrum and realizing realistic defocus blur. Alternative approaches based on point clouds and light fields may demand significant computational resources for preparing adequate target data for optimiz

Holographic direct sound printing.

Direct sound printing (DSP), an alternative additive manufacturing process driven by sonochemical polymerization, has traditionally been confined to a single acoustic focal region, resulting in a voxel-by-voxel printing approach. To overcome this limitation, we introduce holographic direct sound printing (HDSP), where acoustic holograms, storing cross-sectional images of the desired parts, pattern acoustic waves to induce regional cavitation bubbles and on-demand regional polymerization. HDSP outperforms DSP in terms of printing speed by one order of magnitude and yields layerless printed stru

Optical vagus nerve modulation of heart and respiration via heart-injected retrograde AAV.

Vagus nerve stimulation has shown many benefits for disease therapies but current approaches involve imprecise electrical stimulation that gives rise to off-target effects, while the functionally relevant pathways remain poorly understood. One method to overcome these limitations is the use of optogenetic techniques, which facilitate targeted neural communication with light-sensitive actuators (opsins) and can be targeted to organs of interest based on the location of viral delivery. Here, we tested whether retrograde adeno-associated virus (rAAV2-retro) injected in the heart can be used to se

High-Quality Depth-Adaptive Computer-Generated Hologram Using Depth-aware Plug-in Network.

Learning-based computer-generated holography (CGH) enables real-time hologram generation, but many existing methods are trained for a fixed propagation depth and require retraining when the target depth changes. Recent depth-adaptive approaches alleviate this limitation, yet often rely on specially designed architectures, limiting compatibility with existing CGH networks. We propose a depth-aware plug-in network that equips existing fixed-depth CGH models with depth-adaptive generation capability without modifying their backbones. The module performs intermediate feature modulation using a phy

Advanced Methodology for Damping Characterization of the Human Tympanic Membrane Using High-Speed Digital Holographic and STFT Analysis.

This study presents an experimental methodology for estimating frequency-dependent damping in the human tympanic membrane (TM) using full-field time-domain holographic measurements and Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) analysis. Although damping plays a critical role in middle-ear mechanics, its experimental estimation remains challenging, with reported values exhibiting substantial variability. A high-speed digital holography (HDH) system is employed to capture transient displacement fields of the TM surface from cadaveric human temporal bones subjected to acoustic click excitation. Label-free lateral shearing digital holographic imaging of red blood cells for sickle cell disease identification.

Digital holographic microscopy enables high-contrast, label-free quantitative phase imaging of transparent cells using visible light. This imaging modality can provide many biophysical and biomechanical cell features based on the numerically processed digital holograms. Sickle cell disease is a condition that affects red blood cells and is a significant health concern worldwide. Its clinical diagnosis, conventionally, is made using high-performance liquid chromatography, which is costly and time-consuming and requires experts to interpret the results. This paper presents a cost-effective metho

Thoracic epidural insertion using extended reality hologram assistance: a randomised trial of regional anaesthesia skill performance on the soft embalmed Thiel cadaver.

BACKGROUND: Medical extended reality projects a 3D digital image onto live surface anatomy via a wearable device while allowing operators to interact with the real world. We have developed a 3D hologram of the thoracic spine from CT images of a soft embalmed Thiel cadaver and visualised spinal anatomy through a Microsoft Hololens2 headset. The primary objective of this study was to test whether thoracic epidural training performance on the cadaver was improved using extended reality compared with the landmark insertion technique. METHODS: The study comprised psychometric evaluation of anaesth

AI-Enabled On-Chip Holographic Imaging for Culture-Free, Single-Fungus-Resolved Antifungal Susceptibility Testing.

Invasive fungal infections are among the most time-critical clinical conditions, yet antifungal susceptibility testing (AFST) remains fundamentally constrained by culture-dependent, population-averaged workflows that require 48-72 h. Here, we introduce a culture-free and rapid AFST platform based on dynamic, single-fungus-resolved phenotypic profiling enabled by AI-powered lens-free holographic imaging. The platform integrates ∼10 mm2 field-of-view on-chip lens-free holographic imaging with a low-cost, easy-to-operate microfluidic chip and a U-Net-based reconstruction and segmentation pipeline

Morphometric effects of particulate air pollution on an optically trapped single red blood cell.

Particulate air pollution is associated with excess deaths and increases in hospital admissions because of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Several scientific studies and assessments have linked particulate pollution to a variety of health problems. In this paper, we provide a single cell in vitro analysis for the effect of the particles, which can enter into blood stream, on red blood cells (RBCs). The RBCs under experiment are incubated with [Formula: see text] particle as the most abundant air pollutants in big cities. The self-referencing digital holographic microscopy (DHM) in Gat

Practical Use of Mixed Reality for Transfacial Pinning in Monobloc Advancement for Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

Mixed reality (MR) enables real-time overlay of virtual anatomic structures in the surgical field and has potential applications in craniofacial surgeries. Although early monobloc advancements have benefited from transfacial pinning, the technique remains challenging owing to the limited safe insertion area and orbital injury risk. The authors processed DICOM-format computed tomography images for bone segmentation and added a rod representing the optimal pin insertion trajectory. Then, the authors imported the final 3-dimensional models into HoloLens 2, an MR device. During surgery, after a bi

Label-free, high-throughput holographic imaging to evaluate mammalian gametes and embryos†.

Assisted reproduction is one of the significant tools to treat human infertility. Morphological assessment is the primary method to determine sperm and embryo viability during in vitro fertilization cycles. It has the advantage of being a quick, convenient, and inexpensive means of assessment. However, visual observation is of limited predictive value for early embryo morphology. It has led many to search for other imaging tools to assess the reproductive potential of a given embryo. The limitations of visual assessment apply to both humans and animals. One recent innovation in assisted reprod

A Submersible, Off-Axis Holographic Microscope for Detection of Microbial Motility and Morphology in Aqueous and Icy Environments.

Sea ice is an analog environment for several of astrobiology's near-term targets: Mars, Europa, Enceladus, and perhaps other Jovian or Saturnian moons. Microorganisms, both eukaryotic and prokaryotic, remain active within brine channels inside the ice, making it unnecessary to penetrate through to liquid water below in order to detect life. We have developed a submersible digital holographic microscope (DHM) that is capable of resolving individual bacterial cells, and demonstrated its utility for immediately imaging samples taken directly from sea ice at several locations near Nuuk, Greenland.

[Techniques for imaging optic disc vasculature in glaucomatous optic neuropathy: A review of the literature].

The anatomy and vasculature of the optic nerve head are complex and subject to numerous variations. The main risk factor for glaucomatous optic neuropathy is elevated intraocular pressure, but many other factors have been identified. A vascular component seems to play an important role in the pathogenesis and/or progression of glaucomatous optic neuropathy, either under the influence of ocular hypertension or as an independent risk factor, particularly as in normal tension glaucoma (NTG). Reduced ocular blood flow has been identified as a risk factor for glaucoma. Numerous instruments have the

Post-ensemble generation with Airy beams for spatial and spectral switching in incoherent imaging.

Spatial, temporal, and spectral resolutions and field-of-view are important characteristics of any imaging system. In most, if not all, it is impossible to change the above characteristics after recording a digital picture, video, or hologram. In recent years, there have been investigations on the possibilities to change the above characteristics post-recording. In this Letter, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we report novel recording and reconstruction methods built upon the principles of coded aperture imaging that allow changing the axial and spectral resolutions post-reco

Response of the human tympanic membrane to transient acoustic and mechanical stimuli: Preliminary results.

The response of the tympanic membrane (TM) to transient environmental sounds and the contributions of different parts of the TM to middle-ear sound transmission were investigated by measuring the TM response to global transients (acoustic clicks) and to local transients (mechanical impulses) applied to the umbo and various locations on the TM. A lightly-fixed human temporal bone was prepared by removing the ear canal, inner ear, and stapes, leaving the incus, malleus, and TM intact. Motion of nearly the entire TM was measured by a digital holography system with a high speed camera at a rate of

Biophysical and Morphological Cell Features Retrieved by Digital Holographic Microscopy Correlate with Drug-Induced Changes in Cell Migration Behavior.

Quantitative analysis of cancer cell migration is critical for developing effective therapies to curb cancer metastasis. However, traditional methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive and lack quantitative capabilities. Cell volume change, a key physiological indicator of cell migration, is directly linked to phase change. In this work, we have developed a model that connects phase features from digital holographic microscopy (DHM) with cell healrate values from the wound healing assay. This approach aims to provide a rapid and quantitative evaluation of the breast cancer cell migration c

[Holographic deformation analysis of the optic canal in blunt cranial trauma].

The problem in question is the uni- and ipsilateral, acute and irreversible blindness following a minor blunt trauma to the skull without any evidence of a fundus pathology, a fracture in the optic canal or a nerve sheath hematoma. Human cadaver skull bases were examined under static load by means of holographic interferometry. It could be shown that stress lines run in a longitudinal and sagittal direction through the ipsilateral, but transversely through the contralateral optic canal. The complex arrangement of the collagen fibers in the optic nerve sheath and its tough fixation to the bony

Ultrathin Mesoporous Ionic Brushes Separator Enables Fast and Durable Zinc-Metal Aqueous Batteries.

Zinc metal aqueous batteries (ZnABs) emerge as promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage, yet severe Zn dendrite formation and anode side reactions degrade cycle life and hinder practical application. Herein, we report an ultrathin (27 µm) mesoporous ionic brushes (MiB) separator based on sulfonic grafted ordered mesoporous silica nanosheets for stable ZnABs. The well-ordered perforative mesopores architecture functions as an ion rectifier that achieves enhanced transfer kinetics and a homogeneous concentration field, thereby promoting dendrite-free deposition, as verified by in situ
