LGBTQ youth experience increased risks of homelessness, mental health disorder symptoms, and suicidality. Utilizing data from LGBTQ youth contacting a suicide crisis services organization, this study examined: (a) rates of homelessness among crisis services users, (b) the relationship between disclosure of LGBTQ identity to parents and parental rejection and homelessness, and (c) the relationship between homelessness and mental health disorder outcomes and suicidality. A nationwide sample of LGBTQ youth was recruited for a confidential online survey from an LGBTQ-focused crisis services hotlin

Homeless youth represent a vulnerable and understudied population. Little research has prospectively identified factors that may place youth at risk for experiencing homelessness. The current study utilizes data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-97 (NLSY-97) to examine predictors of experiencing homelessness as a young adult (before age 25). The NLSY-97 includes a nationally representative sample of 8,984 youth. Data were first collected from these youth when they were between the ages of 12 to 18 years. The current study examined whether individual and family risk factors reporte

CONTEXT: HIV disproportionately affects homeless youth, and interventions to date have had minimal success in reducing sexual risk behaviors in this population. Few qualitative studies have been conducted to provide insight into the influence of homelessness-related factors on sexual risk behaviors.
METHODS: A qualitative study with a quantitative component was conducted with a nonprobability sample of 64 homeless youth aged 14-24; participants were recruited from a variety of venues in Houston between October 2013 and March 2014. Thirteen focus group discussions were conducted; thematic anal

BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE: The availability of urine based testing for Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) provides a unique opportunity to screen for these pathogens outside traditional clinical settings. The researchers investigated the feasibility of street based CT/GC screening in the context of an outreach programme among street/homeless adolescents in Denver.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the integration of urine based CT/GC screening into an existing outreach programme among street/homeless youths and the yield of CT/GC testing in this setting.
METHODS: The Denver Depar

Preparing for the future is a major developmental task during adolescence and early adulthood. However, youth experiencing homelessness face additional challenges relating to economic instability, housing insecurity, and a lack of social support. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 youth, from Ottawa and Toronto, who were experiencing homelessness and participating in a randomized controlled trial of Housing First for Youth (HF4Y). This qualitative study explores youths' visions for the future, including their goals, aspirations, plans, and barriers to achieving them. Overall, fi

Cognitive distortions are conceptualized as one of the most potent predictors of suicide. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms linking cognitive distortions and suicidal ideation. The present study examined a prospective moderated mediation model linking cognitive distortions and suicidal ideation, with drug use, social problem-solving, and perceived burdensomeness as the mediators and childhood sexual abuse as the moderator. Participants included 150 homeless youth who participated in a randomized clinical trial for suicide intervention. Participants were ass

BACKGROUND: Youth experiencing housing instability have higher rates of mental health problems than their housed peers. Few studies have evaluated technological resources for homeless youth to determine how to effectively engage and reach them.
OBJECTIVE: The primary aims of this pilot study were to establish the feasibility (as measured by phone retention rates) and acceptability (ie, participant ratings of resources) of delivering automated mental health resources via smartphone technology.
METHODS: Youth aged 16 to 25 years (N=100) were recruited through homeless shelter agencies in the C

Youth homelessness is a growing problem in the United States. The experience of homelessness appears to have numerous adverse consequences, including psychiatric and substance use disorders. This study compared the frequencies of psychiatric disorders, including substance use, between homeless youth (18-24 years-old) in San Francisco (N = 31) and Chicago (N = 56). Subjects were administered the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) to assess DSM-IV-TR diagnoses and substance use disorders. Eighty-seven percent of the San Francisco youth, and 81% of the Chicago youth met crit

A growing number of children of all ages are experiencing homelessness and displacement. This chapter explores the needs of displaced children in the U.S., focusing on children of immigrants, children from families of migrant farmworkers, and homeless youth. The author discusses many of the common challenges and needs of displaced youth, but also points out the differences between younger children and adolescents, followed by a set of recommendations for health care and service providers.

We used a life stress framework to examine linkages between distal or primary stressors (e.g., child abuse) and proximal or secondary stressors (e.g., street victimization) and their association with substance use among 150 youth experiencing homelessness in the Midwestern United States. Results revealed that numerous primary stressors such as number of times youth ran from home and number of foster care placements were associated with secondary stressors, such as anxiety, total duration of homelessness, and street victimization. Only street physical victimization (e.g., been beaten up since l

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study investigated the relationships between psychiatric and substance-related disorders, high-risk behaviors, and the onset, duration, and frequency of homelessness among homeless youth in Chicago.
METHODS: Sixty-six homeless youth were recruited from two shelters in Chicago. Demographic characteristics, psycho-pathology, substance use, and risk behaviors were assessed for each participant.
RESULTS: Increased frequency and duration of homeless episodes were positively correlated with higher rates of psychiatric diagnoses. Increased number of psychiatric diagn

This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) using a concurrent mixed-methods approach. We recruited individuals aged 18-25 (n = 314) who were homeless and unstably housed (e.g., living in the streets with friends, hotels, or shelters). We measured COVID-19 fear and impact quantitatively and analyzed it using descriptive statistics. Concurrently, we conducted in-person or phone interviews to examine the experiences of YEH (n = 40). Thematic analysis was used to organize the findings. YEH identifying as LGBTQ+ youth within this community confr

Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) are at increased risk of HIV. Communication among social network members of YEH about sexual health has the potential to promote safer sex practices. We collected self-reported social network data from 731 YEH (age 14-26) accessing homeless youth services in Los Angeles, California, between 2016 and 2018. Multi-level dyadic network analysis was performed to examine the individual- and network-level characteristics associated with communication about condoms, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), HIV and HIV testing. YEH were significantly more likely to report

BACKGROUND: Children and youth experiencing homelessness are highly affected by adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and related health harms. We aimed to synthesise ACE prevalence in this population, examine whether study characteristics influenced prevalence estimates, and summarise associations of ACEs with health-related outcomes.
METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar for studies published from inception to Jan 23, 2026. We included quantitative studies published from Jan 1, 2000, of participan

Transitional age youth experiencing homelessness (TAY-EH) represent an underserved and understudied population. While an increasing number of empirical interventions have sought to address the high burden of psychopathology in this population, findings remain mixed regarding intervention effectiveness. In this systematic review of behavioral health interventions for TAY-EH, we sought to examine the structural framework in which these interventions take place and how these structures include or exclude certain populations of youth. We also examined implementation practices to identify how inter

BACKGROUND: Youth comprise one-third of the US homeless population. However, little is known about how homelessness affects health care utilization.
OBJECTIVE: Examine associations of homelessness with hospitalization, primary care, and ED visits, varying by race/ethnicity, among Medicaid-enrolled youth.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using California Medicaid claims data on youth beneficiaries with complex needs. We examined the number of hospitalizations, preventable and nonpreventable ED, and primary care visits using a multivariate regression. We further explor

BACKGROUND: Youth, 18 to 24 years, experiencing homelessness (YEH) are recognized as having developmental challenges dissimilar to older adults. Yet, research on efforts to end homelessness and prevent or intervene in drug use and mental health problems among youth have lagged behind that of adults. The Housing First (HF) Model which underlies Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) and Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) has become preferred over treatment-first models.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We provide an overview of PSH and RRH studies to date and summarize our current understanding of their utility for use w

OBJECTIVE: Transitional age youth experiencing homelessness (TAY-EH) bear a high burden of substance use disorders (SUDs) and psychopathology. However, limited data exist on the co-occurrence and interactions between these diagnoses in this marginalized group. This study sought to identify rates of single and co-occurring SUDs and psychiatric diagnoses among a sample of TAY-EH and to investigate associations between psychopathology and prevalence and severity of SUDs in this group.
METHOD: TAY-EH accessing a low-threshold social service agency in a large metropolitan area completed psychosoci

OBJECTIVES: In the United States, up to 70% of youth experiencing homelessness smoke cigarettes. Many are interested in quitting; however, little is known about psychosocial factors influencing smoking relapse in this population. This study, part of a larger project to develop an optimized smoking cessation intervention for youth experiencing homelessness, aimed to describe how psychosocial factors influence smoking relapse in this group.
METHODS: This study describes the smoking relapse experiences of 26 youth tobacco users, aged 14-24 years, who were recruited from a homeless drop-in center
