In the sixth wave of the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), when their offspring were 25 years old, the parents were asked to reflect on their most challenging and best experiences raising children in non-traditional families. The responses of 131 parents were interpreted through thematic analysis. The most challenging parenting experiences fell into five major categories: (1) distress about their children's experiences of exclusion, heterosexism, or homophobic stigmatization; (2) family of origin non-acceptance of their lesbian-parent family; (3) the never-ending process

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is likely the largest provider of health care for LGBT persons in US. However, histories of homophobia, stigma, discrimination, and past military policies have all had a lasting impact on the health of LGBT veterans. Effects can be seen across healthcare needs, disparities, access, and utilization for or by LGBT veterans. A case from a VA hospice unit is used to illustrate some challenges and opportunities when providing end-of-life care for an older, lesbian veteran. This veteran had been cared for by her wife who was struggling to meet care needs at ho

This study examined the extent of tobacco industry funding of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organisations and whether leaders of these organisations thought tobacco was a priority health issue for their community. We interviewed leaders of 74 LGBT organisations and publications in the USA, reflecting a wide variety of groups. Twenty-two percent said they had accepted tobacco industry funding and few (24%) identified tobacco as a priority issue. Most leaders did not perceive tobacco as an issue relevant to LGBT identity. They saw smoking as a personal choice and individual right

BACKGROUND: Prejudice against lesbians and gay men (PALG) is associated with poorer well-being among sexual-minority people and with broader intergroup tension. Efforts to reduce it may benefit from pairing accurate information about sexual orientation with guided evaluation of the evidence and reasoning behind prejudicial claims. This study tested whether participants assigned to a brief sexual-orientation-focused instructional intervention incorporating critical-thinking elements would display lower immediate self-reported PALG than participants assigned to a neutral-video control condition.

The Bully-Sexual Violence Pathway theory has indicated that bullying perpetration predicts sexual violence perpetration among males and females over time in middle school, and that homophobic name-calling perpetration moderates that association among males. In this study, the Bully-Sexual Violence Pathway theory was tested across early to late adolescence. Participants included 3549 students from four Midwestern middle schools and six high schools. Surveys were administered across six time points from Spring 2008 to Spring 2013. At baseline, the sample was 32.2% White, 46.2% African American,

OBJECTIVES: Using a participatory approach, our objectives were to understand community perspectives on domestic violence (DV) in lesbian, bisexual and trans (LBT) communities, and to assess access to and cultural appropriateness ofDVservices for LBT survivors.
METHODS: We used qualitative methods and conducted focus groups and semi-structured interviews with LBT survivors of DV.
RESULTS: Nearly all participants reported that the level of awareness regarding DV in their communities was limited. Survivors reported difficulty identifying their partners' behavior as abusive. Isolation was descr

OBJECTIVE: This study examined whether the association between social support and condom self-efficacy would be moderated by (a) internalized heterosexism among and (b) enacted heterosexism experienced by young Black men who have sex with men (YBMSM), who contend with high HIV incidence, heterosexism, and low uptake of preexposure prophylaxis.
METHOD: Participants were 1,210 YBMSM (ages 18-29) who completed measures of social support, internalized and enacted heterosexism, and condom self-efficacy in 2 large cities in the southern United States as part of a community-level HIV-prevention stud

Lesbian women engage in more hazardous drinking than heterosexual women yet we know relatively little about what explains this disparity. In the present study, race, socioeconomic status, minority stress, general psychological processes and distress were examined as pathways to hazardous drinking among young (18-35 years) Black and non-Hispanic White lesbian women. We used the psychological mediation framework adaptation of minority stress theory and the reserve capacity model as theoretical underpinnings of the conceptual model in the current study. Self-identified lesbian participants (N= 86

OBJECTIVES: We examined associations of individual, psychosocial, and social factors with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among young men who have sex with men in New York City.
METHODS: Using baseline assessment data from 592 young men who have sex with men participating in an ongoing prospective cohort study, we conducted multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the associations between covariates and likelihood of recently engaging in UAI with same-sex partners.
RESULTS: Nineteen percent reported recent UAI with a same-sex partner. In multivariable models, being in a curre

Sexual satisfaction is an integral component of sexual health and well-being, yet we know little about which factors contribute to it among lesbian/bisexual women. To examine a proposed ecological model of sexual satisfaction, we conducted an internet survey of married heterosexual women and lesbian/bisexual women in committed same-sex relationships. Structural equation modeling included five final latent variables for heterosexual women and seven final latent variables for lesbian/bisexual women. Overall, results indicated that, for both groups of women, a similar constellation of factors (de

Narratives of homophobia and the repathologization of gay men now emerge and coalesce in often unconsidered ways. Within this paper, we present a deconstructive analysis of a recent paper published within the British Journal of Social Psychology (Crossley, 2004) and highlight how a narrative of repathology emerges through the selective appropriation of particular textual sources. By employing pathological constructions of sexual conduct between men; focusing upon singular homogenized constructions of gay men and simplistic constructions of health promotion and through a process of reconstructi

INTRODUCTION: The starting point of our article is the observation that the target group of Afro-Latin-Caribbean men, who have sex with men, is not reached by sexual health promotion programs for MSM, nor by those aimed at Afro-Latino-Caribbean audiences. Indeed, it seems to be in a blind spot of prevention programs designed by key audiences.
PURPOSE OF RESEARCH: The objective of our article is to understand the vulnerabilities of this group, the impacts of its invisibility and the intersectoral discrimination (homophobia, racism, …) of which itis victim on the management of his sexual health

BACKGROUND: The mpox outbreak resulted in 32,063 cases and 58 deaths in the United States and 95,912 cases worldwide from May 2022 to March 2024 according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Like other disease outbreaks (eg, HIV) with perceived community associations, mpox can create the risk of stigma, exacerbate homophobia, and potentially hinder health care access and social equity. However, the existing literature on mpox has limited representation of the perspective of sexual minority men and gender-diverse (SMMGD) individuals.
OBJECTIVE: To fill this gap, this st

Sexual violence (SV) is prevalent yet understudied among sexual minority men (SMM), leaving gaps in understanding perpetration risk. Experimental analogues are commonly used to examine SV perpetration among heterosexual samples, yet little to no research has examined whether these methods are relevant to SMM, limiting researchers' ability to identify unique predictors among this population. This study examined the feasibility of using vignette methodologies with SMM and investigated empirically supported predictors of aggressive sexual intentions. First, among the full sample (N = 604), we ass

BACKGROUND: In Nigeria, HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) continues to rise due to sociocultural barriers hindering prevention efforts.
AIM: This study investigated the barriers MSM face in HIV prevention.
METHODS: Informed by the social ecological model (SEM), a qualitative study was conducted with 12 participants via online semi-structured interviews. Participants were men over the age of 18 years who were HIV negative and recruited from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Lagos, Nigeria.
RESULTS: Using a thematic analysis approach, six themes appeared as common ba

OBJECTIVES: To synthesize discussions among sexual minority men and gender diverse (SMMGD) individuals on mpox, given limited representation of SMMGD voices in existing mpox literature.
METHODS: BERTopic (a topic modeling technique) was employed with human validations to analyze mpox-related tweets (n = 8,688; October 2020-September 2022) from 2,326 self-identified SMMGD individuals in the U.S.; followed by content analysis and geographic analysis.
RESULTS: BERTopic identified 11 topics: health activism (29.81%); mpox vaccination (25.81%) and adverse events (0.98%); sarcasm, jokes, emotional

Research suggests that HIV infections among men who have sex with men (MSM) are acquired from primary partners, yet MSM continually fail to take part in couples HIV counselling and testing (CHCT). To identify factors that inhibit MSM in universities from regularly testing for HIV with their sexual partners, this study considered the perspectives and experiences of 15 MSM students in Durban, South Africa. The findings show that despite appreciating the value of couple testing it is relatively uncommon. MSM resist doing so with their casual partners as this would presumably signal an intention t

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) has promise for reducing racial/ethnic HIV disparities; yet, acceptance among African Americans remains low. PrEP-related stigmas may impact uptake, but this is understudied. This study examines mechanisms by which stigma impacts PrEP acceptance among various priority African American populations. Focus group data from 63 African American young adults (aged 18-29 years) in Louisville, Kentucky, explore how various stigmas impact attitudes toward PrEP. Data were analyzed using grounded theory analytic techniques. PrEP stigma, HIV stigma, sexual behavior stigma, a

A randomized controlled trial was conducted with homeless gay and bisexual men to assess the impact of two culturally sensitive intervention programs on reduction of drug use and risky sexual behavior. In this study, gay and bisexual men between 18 and 46 years of age were randomly assigned to one of two culturally sensitive behavioral intervention programs: a Nurse Case Management Plus Contingency Management (NCM + CM; n = 204) or a Standard Education Plus Contingency Management (SE + CM; n = 210) program. Regardless of group assignment, significant and clinically relevant reductions were obs

Homeless gay and bisexual (G/B) men are at risk for suicide attempts and have high risk of depressed mood, defined as elevated level of depressive symptoms. This study describes baseline socio-demographic, cognitive, psychosocial, and health- and drug-related correlates of depressed mood in 267 stimulant-using homeless G/B young men who entered a study designed to reduce drug use. G/B men without social support were 11 times more likely to experience depressed mood than their counterparts who had support; those who reported severe body pain were almost six times more likely to report depressed
