Alterations in gut microbiota have been implicated in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), however factors that mediate the host-microbiota interactions remain largely unknown. Here we collected mucosal-luminal interface samples from a pediatric IBD inception cohort and characterized both the human and microbiota proteins using metaproteomics. We show that microbial proteins related to oxidative stress responses are upregulated in IBD cases compared to controls. In particular, we demonstrate that the expression of human proteins related to oxidative antimicrobial activities is

Beneficial plant-microbe interactions are fundamental to plant nutrition, growth, stress tolerance and disease resistance. However, because microorganisms are not encoded by the plant genome, the mechanisms by which microbial associations persist across generations remain unresolved. In this review, we examine the emerging evidence that seeds function not only as reproductive structures but also as reservoirs of microorganisms that may facilitate the maintenance and transmission of selected microbial partners. We synthesize current knowledge of seed microbiome diversity, ecological functions a

Conventional poultry breeding primarily targets host growth traits, yet breeding may also reshape the gut microbiota through host-microbe interactions. Given the spatial heterogeneity of the chicken gastrointestinal tract, whether divergent selection for body weight is associated with compartment-specific microbial assembly and differences in the digestive ecosystem remains unclear. Here, using female primitive line and a high body weight (HBW) selected line, we systematically characterized differences in host gastrointestinal traits and gut microbial ecology associated with divergent selectio

Humans and other animals contain multitudes of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which make up a diverse microbiome. Across body sites including skin, gastrointestinal tract, and oral cavity there are distinct microbial niches that are made up of trillions of microorganisms that have co-evolved to inhabit and interact with the host. The microbiome also interacts with the changing environment. This tripartite interaction between the host, microbiome, and environment suggests microbial communities play a key role in the biological processes of the host, such as development a

In evaluating the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, the diagnostic potential of gingival crevicular fluid has been extensively explored during the last twenty years, from initially just confirming health and disease states to more recently investigating it as a potential prognostic tool. As host susceptibility is a critical determinant in periodontal disease pathogenesis, the inflammatory mediator levels present in gingival crevicular fluid represent relevant risk indicators for disease activity. Considerable work has been carried out to identify the many different cytokine inflammatory pa

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains one of the most lethal malignancies, characterized by late diagnosis, rapid progression, therapeutic resistance, and a highly immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Increasing evidence indicates that the microbiome represents an additional layer of host-tumor interaction influencing PDAC development, progression, and treatment response. PDAC-associated dysbiosis involves coordinated alterations across gut, oral, and intratumoral microbial communities, accompanied by functional changes in microbial metabolism and host signaling. Among mic

The human gut microbiota is transmitted from mother to infant through vaginal birth and breastfeeding. Bifidobacterium, a genus that dominates the infants' gut, is adapted to breast milk in its ability to metabolize human milk oligosaccharides; it is regarded as a mutualist owing to its involvement in the development of the immune system. The composition of microbiota, including the abundance of Bifidobacteria, is highly variable between individuals and some microbial profiles are associated with diseases. However, whether and how birth and feeding practices contribute to such variation remain

A clear understanding of the pathogenesis of fungal disease remains elusive. While technological advances in molecular biology and microbial genetics have provided scientists with major new insights into both microbial virulence factors as well as host susceptibility to infection, there is currently no substitute for animal models in elucidating microbe-host interactions. Animal models are also essential for the evaluation of new antimicrobial agents, including studies of efficacy, adverse reactions and pharmacokinetics. The single most important advance in animal models in the last decade, ha

Intestinal parasites, including helminths and protozoa, account for a significant portion of the global health burden. The gastrointestinal (GI) tract not only serves as the stage for these parasitic infections but also as the residence for millions of microbes. As the intricacies of the GI microbial milieu continue to unfold, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the interactions between host, parasite, and resident microbes help dictate parasite survival and, ultimately, disease outcomes. Across both clinical and experimental models, intestinal parasites have been shown to impact microbi

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Dietary modifiers of the gut ecosystem may influence intestinal and host responses associated with psychological stress. However, it remains unclear whether sucralose, a widely consumed non-nutritive sweetener, alters host-microbiota interactions following chronic stress exposure. We investigated the effects of short-term experimental sucralose exposure in mice previously subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS).
METHODS: Following completion of the CRS protocol, mice received 0.03% or 0.1% sucralose in drinking water for 12 days. Intestinal phenotypes, cecal microbi

The multifaceted interactions occurring between gastrointestinal (GI) parasitic helminths and the host gut microbiota are emerging as a key area of study within the broader research domain of host-pathogen relationships. Over the past few years, a wealth of investigations has demonstrated that GI helminths interact with the host gut flora, and that such interactions result in modifications of the host immune and metabolic statuses. Nevertheless, whilst selected changes in gut microbial composition are consistently observed in response to GI helminth infections across several host-parasite syst

Inflammatory and autoimmune diseases are now understood to be significantly influenced by the intricate interactions between the microbiome and host physiology. This review investigates the function of epigenetic dysregulation in microbiome-host interaction and its consequences for health and disease. Epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA-associated regulation, are key mechanisms that control gene expression without altering the underlying DNA sequence. Microbial metabolites and community composition alterations can cause disruptions in

SUMMARYThe human gastrointestinal tract is a dynamic and complex ecosystem that plays a pivotal role in maintaining host health and regulating microbial homeostasis. This environment significantly impacts the survival and evolution of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. Various innate factors, including pH, temperature, osmotic stress, oxygen levels, host secretions, immune response, bile salts, and nutrient gradients, influence microbial behavior, interspecies interactions, and the spread of resistance genes to ensure successful colonization. The potential of the bacteria to avoid or overcome

Plant-associated microbiomes play a crucial role in environmental detoxification by influencing the degradation, immobilization, and resistance to toxins in polluted settings. The ecological and functional activity of endogenous microbial communities, such as rhizobacteria and endophytic microorganisms, is not well studied when examining contaminants and their environments, despite the fact that plant-mediated bioremediation has garnered a lot of research attention. The majority of previously published research focuses on a single biodegradation route or solitary plant-microbe interactions. Ou

The gastrointestinal tract features a complex barrier system against luminal microorganisms and dietary antigens to avoid initiation of pathological inflammatory responses in the lamina propria. The intestinal microbiota plays an important role in shaping host immune systems and reinforcing epithelial barrier integrity. Alterations in microbial communities are observed in patients with chronic inflammatory disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Although the etiology of IBD ramains unclear, accumulating evidence suggests that a dysbiotic microbiota is involved in the onset and/o

Ascariasis is a globally spread intestinal nematode infection of humans and a considerable concern in pig husbandry. Ascaris accomplishes a complex body migration from the intestine via the liver and lung before returning to the intestine. Tissue migration and the habitat shared with a complex microbial community pose the question of how the nematode interacts with microbes and host cells from various tissues. This review addresses the current knowledge of the trilateral relationship between Ascaris, its microbial environment, and host cells, and discusses novel approaches targeting these inte

Microbes colonizing and/or infecting chronic wounds undoubtedly play a major and interactive role in impaired healing, especially in amplifying and perpetuating the host innate immune response. The development of molecular techniques to identify and quantify microbial organisms has revolutionized our view of the microbial world. These less-biased, high throughput methods greatly enable investigations regarding host-microbe interactions in the chronic wound environment. This review focuses on the mounting evidence implicating microbes and excessive inflammation in chronic wounds, as well as the

During host-microbe symbioses, the fitness of mutualistic microbes is determined by the interactions that concurrently occur, throughout their life cycle, with their host and other members of the surrounding microbial community. Disentangling how these multiple interactions shape the fitness of microbial symbionts is challenging but is essential to understand the diversity and functioning of mutualisms. Here, we examined the different fitness components of rhizobial symbionts of the legume plant Mimosa pudica across the multiple stages of their symbiotic life cycle. By comparing rhizobial symb

Autoimmune diseases are a spectrum of clinical inflammatory syndromes with circulating autoantibodies. Autoimmune diseases affect millions of patients worldwide with enormous costs to patients and society. The diagnosis of autoimmune diseases relies on the presence of autoantibodies and the treatment strategy is to suppress the immune system using specific or non-specific immunosuppressive agents. The discovery of anti-microbial antibodies in the blood of patients with Crohn's disease and Sjogren's syndrome and cross-reactivity of anti-microbial antibodies to human tissue suggests a new molecu

BACKGROUND: Animals are chronically infected by benign and beneficial microorganisms that generally promote animal health through their effects on the nutrition, immune function and other physiological systems of the host. Insight into the host-microbial interactions can be obtained by comparing the traits of animals experimentally deprived of their microbiota and untreated animals. Drosophila melanogaster is an experimentally tractable system to study host-microbial interactions.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The nutritional significance of the microbiota was investigated in D. melanogaste
