Studies on bovine demodecosis in northern Nigeria. Specification and host parasite relationships.

The study reported in the present paper discusses the clinical and histological picture of bovine demodecosis and the morphology of Demodex mites as seen in four cows suffering from generalized demodecosis. There were no clinical signs of other skin affections. Changes in both the number and the appearance of visible skin lesions were seen and related to the level of nutrition and the exposure to sunshine of the cattle. Histological sections of some skin nodules showed the presence of mite colonies in the hair follicles. Only adults were seen in the sebaceous glands. Microscopical study of the

Broad host specificity of Trichinella chanchalensis and minimal interspecific competition with T. nativa and T6 in naturally co-infected hosts.

Trichinella are muscle-dwelling parasitic nematodes that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Trichinella chanchalensis is a newly recognized species that has been reported in wolverine (Gulo gulo). To investigate the host range of T. chanchalensis we examined the tongue and/or diaphragm from 125 wolverines, 34 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), 23 Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis), 13 grey wolves (Canis lupus), 10 coyotes (Canis latrans), six black bears (Ursus americanus), one grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), and one polar bear (Ursus maritimus), from Yukon, Canada. Larvae were recover

Antigenic and mutational insights into the Nipah virus G glycoprotein: implications for viral entry, host specificity, therapeutics, and vaccine development.

INTRODUCTION: Literature indicates that racism, sexism, homophobia and HIV-related stigma have adverse impacts on health, well-being, and quality of life among HIV-positive women of African descent (African/Black diaspora). However, limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma tailored for these women. This study systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-randomized observational and quasi-experimental studies evaluating the effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing stigma experienced by this population. METHODS: The Cochr

Experimental infection of Swiss webster mice with four rat bartonella strains: host specificity, bacteremia kinetics, dose dependent response, and histopathology.

Groups of Swiss Webster outbred mice were each inoculated with one of four bartonella strains originally isolated from Rattus spp. at doses ranging from 10(1) to 10(7) bacteria per mouse. One strain, Rn1691yn (Bartonella coopersplainensis-like), infected mice and produced bacteremias at levels up to 10(5)bacteria/ml of blood and from 3 to 8 weeks duration. A dose dependent response was also observed with differing proportions of mice bacteremic following inoculation at different doses. In addition weeks-to-months long lags in bacteremia manifestation occurred following lower dose exposures. Th

Cryptic host specificity of an avian skin mite (Epidermoptidae) vectored by louseflies (Hippoboscidae) associated with two endemic Galapagos bird species.

Host specificity of vectors is an important but understudied force shaping parasite evolution and the relationship between hosts and parasites. Low vector specificity may allow a vectored parasite to invade new host species, whereas high specificity of vectors may reduce the host range of the parasite and favor specialization. The 'generalist' and widely distributed avian skin mite Myialges caulotoon Speiser (Acari: Epidermoptidae) is unusual because females require an insect vector to complete their life cycle. Myialges caulotoon was previously reported from 2 lousefly (Diptera: Hippoboscidae

Studies on host specificity in Paragonimus westermani: II. Histochemical and cytochemical characterization of metacercariae and worms from rats and dogs.

Histochemical tests were done on newly excysted metacercariae and worms recovered from an abnormal host (rat) and the definitive host (dog) for some oxidoreductases, phosphatases and glycosidases. The results demonstrate that rat worms have enzymatic distribution and intensities more similar to those of metacercariae than to adult worms from dogs. Ultracytochemical examination of acid and alkaline phosphatase and Mg-ATPase activity was also carried out. Acid phosphatase activity occurred exceptionally in the excretory bladder and caeca of dog worms. No activity was observed in rat worms except

Discovery of adults of the gorgoderid trematode Cercaria duplicata with first morphological description, molecular identification and notes on host specificity.

Rhopalocercous Cercaria duplicata von Baer, 1827 develops in an intermediate host, the unionid bivalve Anodonta anatina (L.), but its adult form has been unknown. We examined eight fish species occurring in the presence of a highly infested population of A. anatina in the Zesławice reservoir (S Poland). Gravid Phyllodistomum specimens were obtained from the ureters of ide, Leuciscus idus (L.) and common rudd, Scardinius erythrophthalmus (L.). One of the rudd specimens was doubly infected, a trematode was also found in the urinary bladder. In addition, a gravid Phyllodistomum specimen was found

HY-Specific Induced Regulatory T Cells Display High Specificity and Efficacy in the Prevention of Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease.

Naturally derived regulatory T cells (Tregs) may prevent graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) while preserving graft-versus-leukemia (GVL) activity. However, clinical application of naturally derived regulatory T cells has been severely hampered by their scarce availability and nonselectivity. To overcome these limitations, we took alternative approaches to generate Ag-specific induced Tregs (iTregs) and tested their efficacy and selectivity in the prevention of GVHD in preclinical models of bone marrow transplantation. We selected HY as a target Ag because it is a naturally processed, ubiquitousl

Integrative host transcriptomic and mucosal microbiome profiling reveals region-specific host-microbiome associations across the human intestine.

Host genetics shapes gut microbiome composition, yet the physiological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain poorly understood. Characterizing associations between host gene expression and the mucosal microbiome offers a promising route to identifying the host pathways and microbial taxa most likely to interact physiologically. However, existing investigations have been conducted primarily in acute disease contexts and within the colon, leaving host-microbiome associations outside of acute inflammatory contexts and those in undersampled regions such as the terminal ileum poorly charac

Immunoglobin G Sero-Dynamics Aided Host Specific Linear Epitope Identification and Differentiation of Infected from Vaccinated Hosts.

Differentiation of infected from vaccinated hosts (DIVH) is a critical step in virus eradication programs. DIVH-compatible vaccines, however, take years to develop, and are therefore unavailable for fighting the sudden outbreaks that typically drive pandemics. Here, we establish a protocol for the swift and efficient development of DIVH assays, and show that this approach is compatible with any type of vaccines. Using porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2) as the experimental model, the first step is to use Immunoglobin G (IgG) sero-dynamics (IsD) curves to aid epitope discovery (IsDAED): PCV2 Cap peptid

Comparative host transcriptome in response to pathogenic fungi identifies common and species-specific transcriptional antifungal host response pathways.

Candidiasis, aspergillosis, and mucormycosis cause the majority of nosocomial fungal infections in immunocompromised patients. Using an unbiased transcriptional profiling in PBMCs exposed to the fungal species causing these infections, we found a core host response in healthy individuals that may govern effective fungal clearance: it consists of 156 transcripts, involving canonical and non-canonical immune pathways. Systematic investigation of key steps in antifungal host defense revealed fungal-specific signatures. As previously demonstrated, Candida albicans induced type I and Type II interf

Use of Transcriptional Signatures to Differentiate Pathogen-Specific and Treatment-Specific Host Responses in Patients With Bacterial Bloodstream Infections.

BACKGROUND: Clinical outcomes in bacterial bloodstream infections (BSIs) are influenced by bacterial species, host immunity, and antibiotic therapy. The mechanisms by which such factors influence outcomes are poorly understood. We aimed to identify bacterial- and antibiotic-specific host transcriptional signatures in patients with bacterial BSI. METHODS: RNA sequencing was performed on blood samples from patients with BSI due to gram-negative (GN) versus gram-positive (GP) pathogens: Escherichia coli (n = 30) or Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 28) versus methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aure

A New Clade of Insect-Specific Flaviviruses from Australian Anopheles Mosquitoes Displays Species-Specific Host Restriction.

Flaviviruses are arthropod-borne viruses found worldwide and are responsible for significant human and veterinary diseases, including dengue, Zika, and West Nile fever. Some flaviviruses are insect specific and replicate only in mosquitoes. We report a genetically divergent group of insect-specific flaviviruses from Anopheles mosquitoes that do not replicate in arthropod cell lines or heterologous Anopheles species, exhibiting unprecedented specialization for their host species. Determination of the complete sequences of the RNA genomes of three of these viruses, Karumba virus (KRBV), Haslams

Comparative Genomic Analysis of the Type VI Secretion System in Strains of the Rhizobium leguminosarum Species Complex with Variable Host Specificity.

In this study, genes encoding components of the type VI (T6SS) secretion system and putative effectors were searched in rhizobial strains belonging to the Rhizobium leguminosarum species complex. For this purpose, the genome assembly of the new Rhizobium laguerreae Wp19 strain (genospecies N) isolated from wild pea nodules was done and compared to the type strains. Comparative analysis of tss gene clusters was conducted in the new Wp19 strain and other R. laguerreae strains, as well as R. ruizarguesonis and R. johnstonii strains with available genomes. The resulting genome assemblies of R. lag

Bacterial diversity and community structure shapes pederin polymorphism but lacks association with host genotype specificity in the rove beetle, Paederus fuscipes.

Paederus beetles are notorious for their irritant haemolymph toxin pederin, which is synthesised by an unculturable bacterial symbiont, causing dermatitis when in contact with human skin. Pederin polymorphism is observed when (+) females carrying the toxin pederin and (-) females lacking this co-occur in natural populations. Despite reports detecting pederin polymorphism in several Paederina beetles, symbiont infection frequencies in their natural populations and the bacterial diversity differences underlying the polymorphism between these female types are understudied. Herein we report a high

T. brucei infections abrogate diverse plasma cell-mediated effector B cell responses, independently of their specificity, affinity and host genetic background.

Antibody-mediated parasite killing is considered the most effective host immune response against extracellular trypanosome parasites. However, due to host-parasite co-evolution pressure, these parasites have "learned" how to hijack the host immune system via the development of immune evasion strategies. Hereby they prevent elimination and promote transmission. In the past, our group has shown that African trypanosome parasites are able to "shut down" the host B cell compartment, via the abolishment of the homeostatic B cell compartment. In line with this, we have reported that trypanosome infe

Venom Atypical Extracellular Vesicles as Interspecies Vehicles of Virulence Factors Involved in Host Specificity: The Case of a Drosophila Parasitoid Wasp.

Endoparasitoid wasps, which lay eggs inside the bodies of other insects, use various strategies to protect their offspring from the host immune response. The hymenopteran species of the genus Leptopilina, parasites of Drosophila, rely on the injection of a venom which contains proteins and peculiar vesicles (hereafter venosomes). We show here that the injection of purified L. boulardi venosomes is sufficient to impair the function of the Drosophila melanogaster lamellocytes, a hemocyte type specialized in the defense against wasp eggs, and thus the parasitic success of the wasp. These venosome

DNA sequences confirm low specificity to definitive host and wide distribution of the cat pathogen Platynosomum illiciens (= P. fastosum) (Trematoda: Dicrocoeliidae).

Although feline platynosomosis has been commonly reported in several parts of the world, the taxonomy and epidemiological chain related to cat liver flukes remain controversial. In this study, nuclear ribosomal ITS, 28S, and mitochondrial cox1 sequences obtained for Platynosomum illiciens from cat, marmoset, lizard, and snail found naturally infected in Brazil reveal no significant molecular differences between these isolates. Moreover, sequence data confirm that Brazilian P. illiciens from different hosts is conspecific with parasites obtained from cats in Vietnam, supporting wide distributio

Host specificity of Salmonella infection in chickens and mice is expressed in vivo primarily at the level of the reticuloendothelial system.

By experimental infection, host-specific Salmonella serotypes were shown to demonstrate specificities for chickens, mice, and other laboratory animals. Following oral inoculation, four strains of Salmonella gallinarum and two S. pullorum strains, isolated from diseased poultry, were more virulent for chickens than for mice. By contrast, four strains each of S. choleraesuis and S. dublin, isolated from diseased pigs and cattle, respectively, were more virulent for mice than for chickens. These results were also reflected in the degree of virulence expressed after parenteral inoculation. In addi

Morphological and genetic characterizations of Avitellina tapeworms from domestic ruminants in Senegal: An evidence of specificity among sheep and cattle host.

Avitellina tapeworms are common intestinal parasites of ruminants with a worldwide distribution. In Senegal, only Avitellina centripunctata tapeworm has been reported to date, and genetic diversity was previously confirmed by enzymatic analysis. This study aims to clarify the diversity of Avitellina tapeworms isolated from sheep and cattle in Senegal. In total, 613 adult Avitellina tapeworms were collected from sheep and cattle. Morphological analysis by the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy identified three Avitellina "morphospecies": A. centripunctata and Avitellina sp.2 were
