Ovarian suppression or ovarian ablation used in treatment of breast carcinoma results in temporary or permanent menopause and associated menopausal symptoms - most frequently vasomotoric symptoms (hot flashes, sweats), vaginal atrophy, sleep disturbances. Patients can also experience frequent decrease in bone density (osteopenia, osteoporosis), mood swings or depression, less frequently cardiac toxicity. Managements of these symptoms is complex. As hormonal replacement therapy (estrogens or combined estrogen/gestagen therapy) is contraindicated in women with breast carcinoma, other available o

OBJECTIVE: Most menopausal women report vasomotor symptoms (hot flashes, night sweats). However, not all women with vasomotor symptoms, including frequent symptoms, are bothered by them. The primary aim was to identify correlates of vasomotor symptom bother beyond symptom frequency.
DESIGN: The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation participants reporting vasomotor symptoms at annual visit 7 comprised the sample (N = 1,042). Assessments included hot flash and night sweats frequency (number per week) and bother (1, not at all- 4, very much). Negative affect (index of depressive symptoms, an

Lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and the environment may help to prevent or ameliorate hot flashes and low bone density in men and women after surgical castration. Conventional medications, including megestrol acetate, SSRIs or clonidine, may improve hot flashes but may have limiting side effects. Some complementary and alternative approaches, including black cohosh, vitamin E, and soy products, work as well as placebo to decrease hot flashes and may be helpful, because they have low toxicity. Acupuncture and neurontin are promising but must be studied further. With regards to the preventio

Gabapentin is used for the treatment of hot flashes and neuropathic pain in breast cancer survivors, and is commonly used off-label for the treatment of anxiety. Yet, clinical trial evidence to support the use of gabapentin for anxiety symptoms is lacking. In a randomized, double-blinded controlled trial we compared 300 mg gabapentin versus 900 mg gabapentin versus placebo. Subjects were 420 breast cancer patients who had completed all chemotherapy cycles. Anxiety traits and current (state) anxiety were measured using the Speilberger Strait-Trait Anxiety Inventory at baseline, 4 and 8 weeks. P

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and the first cause of cancer death in France. Among the different subtypes of breast cancer, the predominant form is characterized by positive hormone receptors (more than 70% of breast cancers). Hormone therapy thus plays a key role in the strategy of management of these cancers both in adjuvant and metastatic situations. The two types of adjuvant hormone therapy used are selective estrogen receptor modulators and aromatase inhibitors. Fulvestrant, an anti-estrogen, is used alone or in combination with other molecules in metastat

BACKGROUND: During perimenopause, vasomotor symptoms are known to have a detrimental effect on women's functional ability and quality of life. For symptomatic women not eligible for hormonal therapy, desvenlafaxine is an option, but its safety margin and tolerability are not yet determined.
METHODS: A computer-based literature search was done in the databases of MEDLINE, Cochrane library, and HINARI (Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative). Meta-analysis was conducted by including double-blind randomized controlled studies on the effectiveness and safety of desvenlafaxine in the tr

Although the menopausal transition causes a panoply of unpleasant and disruptive symptoms, many women are reluctant to use estrogen-based treatments due to risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke. As we learn more about how estrogens regulate the cellular and circuit mechanisms underlying menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and brain fog, drug development that specifically targets these mechanisms could provide the therapeutic benefits of estrogens without adverse health effects. This review discusses the rationale for targeting estrogen receptor beta (ERß) with highly selectiv
