Understanding food insecurity risk in the United States: A longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, lack of consistent access to the food needed for an active, healthy life, harms population health. Although substantial biomedical evidence examines the connections between food insecurity and health, fewer studies examine why food insecurity occurs. METHODS: We propose a conceptual understanding of food insecurity risk based on institutions that distribute income-the factor payment system (income distribution stemming from paid labor and asset ownership), transfers within households, and the government tax-and-transfer system. A key feature of our understanding i

High prevalence of intestinal zoonotic parasites in dogs from Belgrade, Serbia--short communication.

To identify areas of risk for canine-related zoonoses in Serbia, the aim of this study was to provide baseline knowledge about intestinal parasites in 151 dogs (65 household pets, 75 stray and 11 military working dogs) from Belgrade. The following parasites, with their respective prevalences, were detected: Giardia duodenalis (14.6%), Ancylostomatidae (24.5%), Toxocara canis (30.5%), Trichuris vulpis (47.0%) and Taenia-type helminths (6.6%). Of all examined dogs, 75.5% (114/151) were found to harbour at least one parasite species. Of these, mixed infections with up to four species per dog occu

Household composition and child health in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: There is a general lack of research on children's household experiences and child health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study examines the relationship between household composition, stunting and diarrhoea prevalence among children younger than 5 years of age in Botswana. METHODS: The analysis uses data from the 2007 Botswana Family Health Survey (BFHS) and multilevel logistic regression models. RESULTS: The findings indicate that stunting varies by whom the child lives with. Stunting is higher among children living with no parents compared to those li

Assesment of household burden of orphaning and coping strategies by guardians and families with orphans and vulnerable children in Hossana Town, SNNPR.

BACKGROUND: Globally the number of orphans is increasing due to HIV/AIDS, internal corflicts and others. Orphanage and vulnerability causes much of its burden on poor households and children. OBJECTIVE: This study was initiated to assess household challenges of orphaning and coping strategies by families and guardians living with Orphan and Vulnerable Children (OVC). It has also tried to look at the types and level of challenge facing OVC. METHODOLOGY: Community based descriptive cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted from October to November 2008 using a pre-tested Amharic questi

COVID-19-Related Daily Life Disruptions and Suicidal Behaviors Among Korean Adults: A National Population-Based Study.

Public health crises may disrupt health behaviors and socioeconomic conditions that influence suicide risk. This study examined associations between COVID-19-related daily life disruptions and suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among Korean adults. We analyzed nationally representative data from 149 950 adults aged 19 to 64 years from the 2021 Korea Community Health Survey. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models assessed associations between changes in health behaviors (physical activity, smoking, alcohol use, instant food consumption) and socioeconomic conditions (household inc

Teens at work: a statewide study of jobs, hazards, and injuries.

PURPOSE: Occupational injury is an ongoing and serious threat to American youth. However, little is known about the environments in which youth work or the hazards to which they are exposed. The purpose of this study was to document the patterns of work, exposures to hazardous equipment and situations, and work-related injury experiences of adolescents. METHODS: We identified a statewide targeted sample of North Carolina households with teens age 14-17 years and interviewed those who had ever worked for pay or worked on a farm. RESULTS: Five hundred sixty-two teens from 700 eligible househol

Estimating the population at high risk for tuberculosis through household exposure in high-incidence countries: a model-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Household contacts of people with pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) have greater risk of developing TB. Recent guidelines conditionally recommended TB preventive treatment (TPT) for household contacts of any age living in TB high-incidence countries, expanding earlier guidance to provide TPT to household contacts under five. The all-age population of household contacts has not been estimated. METHODS: Our model-based estimation included 20 countries with >80% of incident TB globally in 2019. We developed country-specific distributions of household composition by age and sex using bootst

Push or Pull: Changes in the Relative Risk and Growth of Entrepreneurship Among Older Households.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Amid insufficient retirement savings and the growing need to work longer, it is important to understand why self-employment, especially entrepreneurship, has grown among older households. Older households may have been pushed into entrepreneurship by the growing risks of wage-and-salary employment as wages and jobs have become less stable. Alternatively, older households may have been pulled into entrepreneurship as the associated risks have declined, for instance, due to greater opportunities to diversify income away from risky business income. We examine the economic ca

Seroprevalence of spotted fever rickettsiosis and ehrlichiosis among food processing workers and their families in Latino communities in North Carolina.

Workers in food processing industries are subject to many occupational health risks and disparities, but little is known about their risk of tickborne diseases. We examined a cohort of Latino individuals working in the meat packing, produce processing, and farming industries and their family members in central North Carolina, where incidence of tickborne infections is high. Blood samples were tested for IgG antibodies against Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiosis (SFGR) and Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Covariates of interest included age, sex, primary language, work industry, indoor vs. outdoor work, ho

Household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators in Eastern Sierra Leone.

Child trafficking indicators remain highly prevalent in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province, yet less is known about whether household-level correlates are robust when child-level variation within households is considered. This study examined household and child correlates of child trafficking indicators using baseline survey data from 2,429 households in Kailahun, Kenema, and Kono districts, including 5,999 rostered children aged 5-17. Child trafficking indicators were constructed from the survey's operational definition, including hazardous sectors, hazardous work conditions, and force, fraud, c

Tuberculosis infection screening in children with close contact: a hospital-based study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying and prioritizing at-risk populations is critical for pediatric tuberculosis control. We aimed to identify a latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening strategy that is appropriate for the Chinese context among children with different TB exposure levels and to explore its clinical importance. METHODS: During 2013-2015, we enrolled hospitalized children with suspected respiratory infectious disease (RID) for LTBI screening using the tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-γ release assay (IGRA) T-SPOT.TB as part of a work up for their RID. Participants with confirm

Community study of people who live in squalor.

BACKGROUND: The reasons why people live in squalor have been the subject of much debate but little systematic research other than reports of case series from secondary health-care services. We did a study in the community using standardised instruments to investigate the relation between squalor and mental and physical disorders. METHODS: We did a cross-sectional study of the clients of a local-authority special cleaning service. Levels of domestic squalor and self neglect were measured with the living conditions rating scale, and diagnoses of mental disorder were made by use of WHO's schedul

"Sniffing" out SARS-CoV-2 in Arizona working dogs: an exploratory serosurvey.

Susceptibility to and infection with SARS-CoV-2 in companion animals has been well-documented throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Surveillance for the virus in dogs has largely been focused on household pets; however, other canine populations may also be impacted. We partnered with a local veterinary hospital with a high working dog patient volume to conduct viral and neutralizing antibody testing in working dogs and identify potential risk factors in the dog's work and home environments. Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in law enforcement and security working dogs in Arizona found 24.81% (32/129) of

The burden of headache disorders in the adult general population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: estimates from a cross-sectional population-based study including a health-care needs assessment.

BACKGROUND: We have previously shown headache to be highly prevalent among adults in Saudi Arabia. Here we estimate associated symptom burden and impaired participation (impaired use of time, lost productivity and disengagement from social activity), and use these estimates to assess headache-related health-care needs in Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A randomised cross-sectional survey included 2,316 adults (18-65 years) from all 13 regions of the country. It used the standardised methodology of the Global Campaign against Headache with a culturally mandated modification: engagement by cellphone usi

Gender and poverty in the United States: Evidence from the Survey of Consumer Finances.

This study examines gender differences in poverty determinants among single-headed households in the United States using data from the 2022 Survey of Consumer Finances. Using logistic regression with decomposition methods, we analyzed 1,383 households (833 female-headed, 550 male-headed) to identify factors associated with living below the federal poverty threshold. Results reveal significant differences in poverty determinants between men and women. Working for an employer, self-employment, education level, and age were negatively associated with poverty, while fair health status and income u
